Home Improvement, etc.

Life seems to get much more active when the good weather comes and we get closer to summer holidays. There's so much going on right now. The main events were 1) la f?te des voisins (neighbors day) and?2) finally getting the outside of our house painted.

La f?te des voisins was started in France many years ago and has since caught on pretty much all over Europe. It's held on the last Friday of May and encourages neighbors to get together to share a meal. We had ours last Wednesday with 2 couples who are probably our closest neighbors. I didn't get any pictures while they were here, but they brought us 2 beautiful flower arrangements.

Last year, we contacted several painters to give us an estimate on repainting the wood and shutters on the outside of our house. There's lots of wood and many shutters. Finally, we signed the estimate and the painter came today to leave us a color palette to choose our shutters' color.
They are a sort of a blue-green which is nice. Monsieur Titi wanted to make a radical change but I convinced him to stay with the same general tone. The painter starts on June 6 and should be done with in the week. Hooray, it's been 12 years since this has been done.

The last little bit is a recipe for a Lemon Cake that I made for the neighbors' party. I don't have a Bundt pan so I just used a large round cake pan. Enjoy!!!!

Lemon Lovers' Pound Cake

Ingredients:

1 cup butter (no substitutes), softened
3 cups sugar
6?eggs
5 tablespoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon grated lemon peel
1 teaspoon lemon extract
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/4 cups sour cream (I used Cr?me Fra?che)

ICING:
1/4 cup sour cream (cr?me fra?che)
2 tablespoons butter, softened
2 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
3 tablespoons lemon juice
2 teaspoons grated lemon peel

Directions:

1. In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in lemon juice, peel and extract. Combine the flour, baking soda and salt; add to the creamed mixture alternately with sour cream. Beat just until combined.

2. Pour into a greased and floured 10-in. fluted tube pan. Bake at 350 degrees F for 55-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pan to a wire rack to cool completely.

3. For icing, in a small mixing bowl, beat the sour cream and butter until blended. Gradually add confectioners' sugar. Beat in lemon juice and peel. Drizzle over the cake. Store in the refrigerator.

High Tea and Afternoon Tea | Article Buss

Tea the Drink

There are two forms of tea that often cause confusion in the tea world: tea the drink and tea the meal. Tea the drink is made from the Camellia Sinensis plant and from the processing of the plant white, green, oolong, and black teas are produced. The basic teas are also often blended with other plants like vanilla, mint and melon as well as flavors like Oil of Bergamot to make Earl Grey Tea,

The beverage is made by steeping processed leaves, buds, or twigs of the tea bush in hot water for a few minutes. The processing can include oxidation, heating, drying, and the addition of other herbs, flowers, spices, and fruits.

The term ?herbal tea? usually refers to infusions of fruit or of herbs (such as rosehip, chamomile, or jiaogulan) that contain no Camellia Sinensis.

Tea the Meal

Tea the meal on the other hand involves tea the drink as an important part but really is directed toward social and family gatherings where tea and food are often consumed together.

Generally speaking , the tea meal became most popular and refined in England but spread to English speaking countries or former English colonies as well. Tea meals are also celebrated in other countries in differing forms.

The key distinction between differing tea meals is the time of day, type of food served and the location of serving.

Afternoon tea

Afternoon tea (or Low tea) is a light meal typically eaten at 4:00 pm. It originated in Britain, though various places in the former British Empire also have such a meal. However, most Britons no longer eat such a meal.

Traditionally, loose tea would be served in a teapot with milk and sugar. This would be accompanied by various sandwiches (customarily cucumber, egg and cress, tuna, ham, and smoked salmon), scones (with butter, clotted cream and jam) and usually cakes and pastries. Traditionally the tea and food would be served on a lounge (or low) table.

While afternoon tea used to be an everyday event, nowadays it is more likely to be a treat in a hotel, caf?, or tea shop, although many Britons still have a cup of tea and slice of cake or chocolate at teatime. Accordingly, many hotels now market and promote afternoon teas.

High tea

To the uninitiated, High tea may be a confusing term.

High tea is an early evening meal, typically eaten between 5:00 and 6:00 pm. It would be eaten as a substitute for both afternoon tea and the evening meal. The term comes from the meal being eaten at the ?high? (main) table, instead of the smaller lounge (low) table. It is now largely replaced by the later meal tea.

It would usually consist of cold meats, eggs and/or fish, cakes and sandwiches. In a family, it tended to be less formal and is an informal snack (featuring sandwiches, cookies, pastry, fruit and the like) or else it is the main evening meal.

On farms, rural areas or other working class environments, high tea would be the traditional, substantial meal eaten by workers immediately after nightfall, and would combine afternoon tea with the main evening meal.

In recent years, High tea somehow became a word for exquisite afternoon tea. Such usage is incorrect. High Tea is not, in traditional terms, afternoon tea.

Main evening meal

Tea is the main evening meal, even if the diners are not drinking tea. It is traditionally eaten at 5 o?clock in the evening, though often it is later, as late as 9pm.

In many rural parts of the United Kingdom tea as a meal is synonymous with dinner in Standard English. Under such usage, the midday meal is sometimes termed dinner, rather than lunch.

The United States

The term high tea is sometimes used in the United States to refer to afternoon tea or the tea party, a very formal, ritualized gathering in which tea, thin sandwiches and small cakes are served in an exquisite setting. This usage comes from misunderstanding the term high to mean formal. Most tea drinkers understand that such usage is incorrect;

This form of tea is increasingly served in high-end U.S. hotels, often during the winter holidays and other tourist seasons, and many big-city teahouses, where it is usually correctly described as Afternoon tea

Social Implications

The tea party is still occasionally given in the U.S., usually for a special occasion. This occasion is a formal one, but otherwise afternoon tea is an informal gathering of friends. The tea party often became a place of intimate conversation and social intercourse.

Tea is a very important part of many people?s lives and it is important for those who drink tea or participate in tea meals to understand the correct terminology.

The www.theteahub.com site gives you information about black tea and also has a great article on the differences between high tea.

Insurance Reviews ? Blog Archive ? 'Fatherhood After Death': Geula ...

Channel One Newscast: ?Fatherhood After Death?: Geula Even interviews Irit Rosenblum. An Israeli court allowed the parents of a young man who died of cancer to use his frozen sperm, which he had deposited in a sperm bank, in order to conceive a child. Baruch Posniansky?s parents have already found a woman who wished to be impregnated with the sperm he left. All this is possible thanks to a detailed Biological Will that was left by the deceased. Irit Rosenblum, founder and executive director of New Family Organization, accompanied this process. Geula Even: Have you been accompanying this process from the moment when the young man wrote the Biological Will, or afterwards, accompanying his parents? Irit Rosenblum: I?ve been accompanying this process since its inception in 2001, when I created the option of leaving a Biological Will. I turned to the young population of soldiers, whose life was endangered, to enable them to leave a biological legacy if, god forbid, their reproductive capability was damaged in the course of their military service. Geula Even: And was the Posniansky family one of the ones that responded? Irit Rosenblum: I?ve been accompanying the Posniansky family since before Baruch?s death. Geula Even: Did they waver in their decision, or did they immediately know that this is what they needed to do? The parents and the son? Irit Rosenblum: By the time they came to me, their decision had been made. They came to us knowing that this process was possible. They <b>?</b>

Celebrity Millennium Mediterranean Cruise Review

We sailed from Marseille on a Mediterranean cruise with Celebrity, Millennium. A meeting in Dublin gave us miss the first day of the cruise from Barcelona, ??but it was also where the cruise ended, we knew we would see anyway. Marseille ? taxi 40 ?. Getting in the rain, so tired that we slept through the day instead decided a visit to Marseille Provence or nearby.

Table companions included a pair of northIreland, a couple from Holland Park in London and another from Miami. Traveling with my best friend was a good one, as we moved around the table at night to talk with others at the table.

Foods. The first night I was disappointed with the food. Celebrity has a good reputation for food, which I expected more. My cruise experience is not very wide at this point, but I expected it to be better than Holland America, and it was not. On our first official night there were only 6 ofWe were awarded instead of 8, and the food. After a long day of sightseeing, we opted for the buffet dinner that is good and satisfying but not memorable by any stretch of the imagination. Lunch on board were the usual salads, hot dishes, burgers and pizza, the popular ice cream bar.

Spa: The first day on board we signed up for everything for our day at the beach ? classes, lectures and a pedicure. E 'was excellent. However, a day at the beach, the spa appointment onlywas at 8:00, and that must soon begin a nap (oh, the luxury-cruise) in late morning to recover. Our day at the beach was full of events, pedicures, shopping, a conference of art at auction, what Pink Ribbon, lunch, spa classes, lectures and more history. We had many things on our agenda, things that we lost the encounter Cruise Critic and a few others too. Easy to do too much.

Our ports of Villefranche, Nice was attractive, the door with his typicalCosta Azzurra restaurant scene on the promenade with their shutters in the wind ocher and saffron-colored houses extends to the citadel hill and gardens. The charming town of Villefranche easily us busy for a week, but fellow travelers were amazed by the beautiful mountain village of Eze, and the ease of the train to Monaco or Nice and Cannes. In half an hour, and only a few euros, are in the center of Cannes and Monaco.

For Rome, ourPort of Civitavecchia, was it worth it to lose Sunday. The train to Rome is about an hour and a half from here, but often for trains on Sunday (check Trent Italia before departure), we have to wait an hour for the train, and arrive in Rome late in our appointment Villa Borghese, Rome's leading collection of masterpieces, including works is by Titian, Caravaggio and Raphael .. In any case, was a friend of the situation, our path to the fabulous art collection discussionthat late hour, and also free. It was raining when we went, one reason to stay in the cafeteria of the museum and have an extra charge (although typical of Rome) for lunch before our way to St. Peter. We both had visited before, so ours was a short visit to some of the things that we had lost on other occasions OOGLE.

Then take a taxi to the train station where we had to arrive, panting, just in time for our train back to port. A misunderstanding meant that we did notTickets were punished for not having a ticket when boarding, but for the whole trip was worth the money.

Mykonos We docked at 1:00 and took the shuttle into the city for $ 10 each. We walked around the harbor, especially browsing in shops, but also the local church and the Catholic Church, the windmills, Little Venice to see and purple on foot the narrow streets with whitewashed houses, blue doors Aegean and bougainvillea. Back on board, the Greek dancer was brought on board the more special atmosphere. We made a trip to the floor.

Ephesus ? the highlight of the journey church. The 715Am An unusually early for a day trip is to include the House of Mary in Ephesus, a museum and St. John. Mary's home was a solemn and peaceful day. Fresh morning air smelled what I think were laurel trees, it was wonderful. The tour of Ephesus, but was in the hot sun (in May), but it was the highlight of our> Cruise. E 'was even more impressive ? for men latrine, a library, an amphitheater and much more. The museum has many statues and mosaics from the environment. Church of St. John was interesting. I have not for the carpet store at the end we were shown care. Providers in all the shops were too aggressive.

A lazy day at sea followed, including lectures, art auctions, theater, movies and more. Palermo. My choice was to give a miss, and none of the shore excursions seemed interesting. We havetheir pay during the siesta investigate if the shops were closed. It was a mistake ? I've never seen a dirty, unfriendly city. We went to the Cathedral and the Opera House. I had to stay on board.

Barcelona: Our cruise ended in Barcelona. We chose a late departure from the ship and took a taxi to the station. We could store our luggage in lockers, and then a hop on hop off tour of the city right outside the station. The train for theAirport was easy and inexpensive and easy to walk to the terminals. The RENFE train leaves every 30 minutes from the airport to downtown Barcelona. Takes about 25 minutes. You can take the train from Estacio de Franca, Passeig de Gracia, or Barcelona Sants take (otherwise known as Sants Estacion) The name of the station for the airport Aeropuerto.

Hurt Locker lawsuit targets a record-breaking 24,583 IP addresses

It's been almost a year since the producers of The Hurt Locker filed a lawsuit against 5,000 alleged pirates suspected of distributing the film via BitTorrent. Now Voltage Pictures has updated its complaint, adding almost 20,000 IP addresses to the list of defendants. That makes it the largest file-sharing lawsuit of all time -- a crown previously held by the company behind The Expendables, according to Wired. The plaintiff has already reached agreements with Charter and Verizon to identify individual users, but no such deal with Comcast, who owns nearly half the supposedly infringing addresses. Linking those addresses with user accounts would let Voltage manage individual settlements -- probably somewhere between $1,000-$2,000 -- rather than continue legal action. All of this eerily echoes the Oscar-winning film's plot, about an adrenaline junkie who couldn't resist downloading just one more movie. Or defusing one more bomb. We're a little fuzzy on the details, but venture into TorrentFreak to scan for familiar IP addresses.

Sales Management Training ? Is it Worth It? | Business in New World

Sales Management training can be one of the biggest challenges for any organization.

So often companies decide their best salespeople into sales management roles, usually as a reward for a great career put on sale.

http://www.salesforce.pannipa.com/2009/11/sales-management-training-is-it-worth-it/

The problem is that the poor often receive no formal training new sales manager. If they are really lucky they get to participate a Sales Manager Training program. Which in theory is great? Although in practice can be an enormousWaste of money.

This was confirmed by the latest research on what actually works.

The challenge, with a sales management training, as this:

1. They are carried out in isolation.

2. No follow-up or support it.

3. Too much information, without any connections

4. Full of hard skills, such as how to write a business plan. Such as fire or hire people. Very little soft skill development.

How do I know? Well, because Iheld a number in my time. As a sales consultant performance in which we are often asked to deliver ?manual? as quickly as we could. No questions asked. Just content. On the positive side, the company wanted to help their sales manager. The problem was that they do not realize that development is a process and takes time to work.

Some interesting facts for you. A study this year (2008). The positive impact of training and development outcomes are:

40%: byLearning and reading of texts before the course begins

20%: content delivered on the day

40%: the follow-up after the event

So in answer to my original question of trade with the training of managers is worth or necessary. I have to say, most definitely, yes.

Neither sales nor sales people born. They are made in any case. The best way to ensure this is done through a structured training and development plans over time.
Plans that balancethe old and new.

There is so much new information, which are currently working to reach about dealing with attitude toward success in sales. Yet, ironically, to mention so few classic programs for development, especially in sales only, still alone, which employ techniques to make it happen.

How you can help your own development? Well first of all examine what makes your company or your company a preferred supplier when it comes to sales manager training.

If it does notoffer some of the things proposed to have a look outside this sphere. It is possible and often with a different perspective on things.
Big Note, many training companies provide the same material each year. Never go to the new evidence of what works in a changing economic climate.

Be Ausgesetzt to do different ways of things that will expand your awareness and have additional qualifications that some of your colleagues are not known.

I have an example from my own. Slightly more thanTen years ago, I decided to check out NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) Most of my colleagues. thought I was crazy to do it in my own time. But we mean with money.

Well 12 months later, my team went from 8th to 2 Place and my annual bonus hit 5 figures. For me, the extra effort was worth it. Not only do I great financial value. So my team to learn new tips and strategies have to help them. So that all won all round.

Make your own free development. It is a processfor the life of a successful sales manager as you

Patent trolls' next target: Independent developers

May 26, 2011

It's bad enough when a company that has never invented much of anything buys a patent and then sues a giant like RIM or Microsoft for allegedly violating its intellectual property rights. But an obscure, Marshall, Texas, firm named Lodys is going after independent iOS developers, threatening to sue them if they don't start paying royalties for using Apple's in-app purchasing system.

For a while it looked like the developers were faced with the ugly dilemma of yielding to a bully or spending huge amounts of money to defend themselves in a handpicked federal court. But Apple this week intervened on the side of its developers, warning that it's "fully prepared" to defend its license rights.

There's a word that describes companies like Lodsys, but I won't use it because I'd hate to involve myself or InfoWorld in a potential lawsuit over defamation. But we all know there are companies that buy patents and do nothing with them until they suddenly pop up with a claim that someone who is actually using related IP is violating their rights and had better pay.

Our patent system is enshrined in the Constitution and was designed to foster and protect innovation. But despite numerous, well-publicized examples of abuse, the system remains broken. I suspect Apple's intervention will scare off Lodsys. But this incident underlines the problem and is why anyone who works for a small company or hopes to strike out on their own as a developer has a stake in reform.

Picking on the little guy
Like a lot of patent issues, this one is complex and has roots in the pre-Internet days of the early 1990s, when a Massachusetts inventor named Daniel Abelow patented concepts that are central to the creation of an app store. (You can read the patent here.) In a recent interview with the Guardian, he said: "The idea was that if you're sitting and holding in your hand a product and you use it, why shouldn't it be aware of your behavior, digitally, and conduct your needs to the vendor, who could interact with you."

Hundreds of companies have licensed his patents, and four were purchased outright by Lodsys in 2004 and another by Webvention, also of Marshall, Texas, which calls itself "an intellectual-property licensing company."

The fact that both companies are based in Marshall is not a coincidence. The federal district court there is considered friendlier to patent predators than any other in the United States. It's so friendly, in fact, that plaintiffs will travel thousands of miles from their home to file a patent suit. It makes sense to base a patent holding company there if you think you might want to litigate.

The patents are related to technology now used (among other things) to convert free apps to paid ones with a button. Lodsys says that although Apple has licensed the technology, the license does not extend to third-party developers. It's worth nothing that the developers have no choice: They have to use related APIs if they want their apps to be accepted by Apple and sold via iTunes.

MLM Secrets: Supplement Your Income For The Future - Internet ...

Many people have found financial freedom through MLM opportunities. Working from home is a dream that many people have successfully made into a reality. Here are some ways that MLM secrets can work for the average hard working person.

Working in an MLM business opportunity is different from your average job. There is not a set hourly wage or guaranteed level of monthly income. Getting business off the ground will require an investment of both time and money. Business owners that find themselves extremely short in working capital may have to invest more time.

There can be an entry fee associated with buying a MLM business. It is easy to gain the working capital for this purchase by having a yard sale, doing freelance work, or picking up a side job. There are hundreds of good companies to work with. One of the MLM secrets tips is to take time before signing up to fully understand the business model of the selected company. For example, a business may retail nutritional supplements. The income may be earned from both retailing products and from gaining new sign ups into the company. This will help you see what course to take for investing money into your niche.

Many Network marketers are not good at recruiting other team members. Investing in professional MLM training materials is one way to overcome this hurdle. Sticking to a script is one way to feel confident when talking to leads on the phone or in person. Simply assure new recruits that they too can succeed through the sales training. Direct new team members to the training information instead of doing everything for them.

Another MLM secrets tip is using scripts and marketing plans helps stop mindless rambling and chasing uninterested people. Marketing online can be started inexpensively. It doesn?t have a large investment in time to regularly update a MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube page. These online updates will bring the interested people to MLM opportunity pages for free. Writing articles and distributing them to free article directories is another way to push leads to a MLM capture page.

Paying for leads is not inexpensive. It is a way to invest in the business to find people that have expressed a desire to work from home. Taking consistent actions will bring in good results. It is common for it to take a few months or many years to develop a large income from MLM.

Spend some time to read over the MLM opportunity a few times before signing up. Never is it necessary to reach out multiple time to friends and family and ask them to sign up. Instead spend some time online each day to market and bring in qualified people. Spend some profits or personal income each month on professional training. When considering MLM secrets, use these easy tips to help you find personal success.

Discover the advantages and benefits of building a successful business using modern MLM Secrets. You can get the foundation you need to begin building your downline with MLM Secrets training available now!

The California LLC ? taxed to death?

The limited liability company, better known as "LLC," was marketed as the best companies for small economic unit. The question is whether the market reflects a reality or not. In California, the situation is a little murky at best.

California is known that over the business unfriendly as any state. If you do not get taxed here, you are always met with some odd charge there. The weather makes up for it, butsometimes you really have to wonder whether it's worth it. This is especially true for small businesses, for which a company with limited liability in the head to be met with a number of surprises head.

The first surprise is that it could be found only in California. CLL is to pay an annual fee of $ 800 for a "privilege of doing business in California." Oh, joy. The tax is due by the end of the first year, but within months of forming your company. Yes,Door has just opened and already met with the costs of the state!

The next surprise comes when you start bringing in a business. The surprise villain goes by the name of the "tax on gross income." In addition to the annual fee of $ 800 over, you must pay a tax based on gross revenue. The tax does not start until you bring in at least $ 250,000 per year, but it is important to remember that what we are talking about. This is a tax "gross" revenue. An example will helpexplain the importance of this.

Places I have a business that sells an item of great price. My business plan calls for me to lose my money the first three years as a company grows. The first year I have lost $ 125,000 and $ 10,000 as expected. Then about two years apart. I bring in $ 260,000 in lost revenue and another $ 10,000. To my surprise, I have an extra $ 900 in gross receipts taxes. Yes, this is true, even if I do not make a profit!

Then you must avoid the formation of aCalifornia LLC? No, not really. It's still a good choice. A company in California to be 800 to pay the same fee of $, but not the gross income tax. Until you know what you get involved, LLC is still worth the aggravation Financial.

'The Tree Of Life': A Creation Trip Worth Taking

The Tree of Life

  • Director: Terrence Malick
  • Genre: Drama
  • Running Time: 138 minutes

Rated PG-13 for some thematic material

With: Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Jessica Chastain

The Tree of Life is Terrence Malick's big one ? part creation epic, part Oedipal family drama, an answer to Kubrick's 2001 and maybe Paradise Lost. Malick's films all touch on Eden, the natural world into which humans are born, and the Fall, marked by male aggression as well as the soulless aspects of civilization.

This picture has a suggestion of a narrative, but it's mostly a montage on his pet themes. I think of it as a Transcendentalist church pageant in which characters whisper questions in voiceover to the Almighty ? "Where were you when so-and-so died?", and "How can I get close to you?" Malick uses all his resources to trace the connections between the fleeting and the infinite ? and if that sounds highfalutin', you ain't heard nothing yet.

The family is the O'Briens, who live in the '50s in Waco, Texas. Brad Pitt plays the stern patriarch, redheaded Jessica Chastain the diaphanous mother, the spirit of Grace. I'm not reading in: She ruminates on the "way of Grace" versus "the way of Nature," which makes things easier if you're writing a term paper.

In the overture, Malick jumps all over in time. The mother gets a telegram saying one son has died, probably in a war, although it's not spelled out. There are shots of her three boys' idyllic childhood. Then Malick jumps ahead to one boy, Jack, middle-aged. He's played by Sean Penn, and seen in both a glass-and-steel metropolis and on a rocky beach representing his inner universe.

Then comes nothing less than a mind-bending vision of the cosmos being formed and the beginning of life on earth ? squiggly one-celled forms, jellyfish, dinosaurs. There's a shot of a fully dressed child swimming out of an underwater bedroom to the surface ? a symbolic birth ? into the Garden of Eden that is Waco.

The protagonist is Penn's Jack as a boy, played well by Hunter McCracken with the perfect stuck-out ears for his father to grab. He adores his mom and wishes aloud for his dad to die ? this because his dad is a disciplinarian with a thing for macho ritual.

Cue the Biblical Fall. A neighbor drowns, another is burned, and Jack blows up a nest of bird's eggs. He asks God, "Why should I be good if You aren't?" It's tantalizing stuff, suggesting the psychosexual underpinnings of Malick's mythic visions. But then we go right to the exodus ? the family relocates ? as if Malick skipped pages in the prayer book to get to the final hymn.

I know Malick nuts who've said they were so moved by The Tree of Life they began to shake. Then there were two women at my screening who agreed it was a self-indulgent piece of you-know-what. It is self-indulgent, but some selves are better indulged than others, and even at his goofiest Malick's worth the effort. His vantage is an original combination of the archetypal and the impressionistic, the camera trailing after characters and hovering. In interviews, Pitt put it well: Malick is "like a guy with a big butterfly net, waiting for a moment of truth to go by." And those disconnected moments are amazingly fluid.

But Malick can be annoyingly abstract: No image is allowed to be non-archetypal, and the actors spend a lot of time tottering among trees looking bereft while the soundtrack serves up classical chestnuts. The Tree of Life is meant to portray the attempt of a man who has fallen from grace to make peace with a God he'll never understand. But what exactly did he do wrong? Penn's Jack looks suitably stricken, but the part is underwritten, and the final imaginary sequence is an embarrassment. Malick has everything but storytelling instincts.

The Tree of Life doesn't jell, but I recommend the experience unreservedly. You might find it ridiculously sublime or sublimely ridiculous ? or, like me, both. But it's a hell of a trip.

Young women with breast cancer who are on Arimidex?? | Breast Cancer

Hi,I did the following:

Young women with breast cancer who are on Arimidex??I was on Zoladex and Arimidex (an aromatase inhibitor) for two years due to my cancer being hormone receptor positive and HER2neu-positive.

Unfortunately I experienced a total change of character. I became severely depressed and even aggressive. At first I thought I wasn?t dealing well with my cancer diagnosis so I had counseling, but it turned out that I was actually handling things very well, considering the circumstances.

I talked this over with my oncologist and am now on an Arimidex break (I am still taking Zoladex shots). And I noticed the change immediately. Not only do I feel much more stable mentally, but the horrible bone and muscle aches are over as well. But now I?m freaked out because I feel unprotected?

Has anyone else who is pre-menopausal had problems with Arimidex or an aromatase inhibitor as well? How did you deal with this?

Please bear in mind that due to my bc being HER2neu+++ I am not able to switch to Tamoxifen.
Yes, I have been on Herceptin for a year.

In my country you don?t get given Tamoxifen with a tumour that is HER2neu+++ as research has shown that it?s likely to have no effect on those kind of tumours. So even pre-menopausal women like myself take Arimidex. It?s either an aromatase inhibitor or nothing for those tumours.
The Zoladex-shots are supposed to make you ?post-menopausal? (hormone levels are extremely low).
Sorry, I meant that tamoxifen MIGHT not have an effect?

-Elke M
I wish I could answer you. I never heard anyone that is not post menopause getting aromatase inhibitors. Tamoxifen is all I know for pre menopause.

-Robert H
I think most oncologists would agree that the jury is still out on being able to use tamoxifen in young women with Her-2-neu positive, hormone-positive breast cancer. There are theoretical risks about tamoxifen actually increasing the likelihood of disease recurrence or spread, but studies examining this risk are only underway and their results are likely years away.

All of the aromatase inhibitors are associated with increased arthralgias and myalgias to some degree. Perhaps your symptoms may be lessened by switching to exemestane (a steroidal AI). Of course, with the zoladex eliminating your ovarian estrogen production, and the AI eliminating your peripheral estrogen production, your relative levels of testosterone actually increase (because the estrogen has decreased). This gives you the double whammy of post-menopausal symptoms with increased virilization, and all that that implies.

There are a number of over-the-counter remedies for your symptoms, including black cohosh, phytoestrogens and the like. I would caution you to talk with your oncologist before trying these methods to help with your symptoms. Of course, I think you should talk with your oncologist about the necessity for being on this combination therapy as well?

Hangover Tattoo Lawsuit: Can You Copyright Flesh?

An esoteric debate has surfaced in the legal flap over a tattoo appearing on a character in the Thursday movie release of The Hangover: Part II.

It surrounds the question of whether a work first rendered on the human body can be copyright.

The nation?s top cited copyright scholar, David Nimmer, doesn?t think so. The author of Nimmer on Copyright was an expert witness for studio Warner Bros., which is being sued on accusations of misappropriating an artist?s copyrighted tattoo originally emblazoned on Mike Tyson?s face.

David Nimmer

Since 1985, Nimmer, a UCLA law professor and practicing intellectual property attorney, has been?continuously?updating his late father?s Nimmer on Copyright, which LexisNexis claims is ?cited in more court opinions than any other treatise on the subject of U.S. copyright law.?

He wrote the judge presiding over the tattoo case that?he?believes?the ?body, even as augmented, simply is not subject to copyright protection.?

Tattooist Victor Whitmill, who brought the case against Warner Bros., had testified that he created the image directly on Tyson?s skin.

Nimmer, though,?acknowledges?that his position has evolved. In?a 2000 case he covered in his treatise, he ?tacitly assumed that a tattoo could ?presumably quality as a work of graphic art, regardless of the medium in which it is designed to be affixed? such as human flesh.?

U.S. District Judge Catherine Perry of Missouri?last week blocked Nimmer from testifying on behalf of Warner Bros., after Whitmill?s attorneys objected on the basis that his filing was a legal opinion ?on what copyright law should be? rather than expert testimony.

The judge, however, declined earlier this week to block the movie from debuting Thursday. The litigation is ongoing.

The lawsuit claims the movie features a ?virtually exact reproduction? of the original tattoo that appears on the Stu Price character played by actor Ed Helms.

Ann Bartow, a USC law professor, accuses Nimmer of having a convenient change of heart to serve his client.

?Nimmer admits in paragraph 15 that he ?used to? think tattoos were eligible for copyright protection and ?even posited one line to that effect in a footnote? in his copyright treatise,? Bartow wrote in a blog post. ?But now he is representing Warner Brothers, he realized he was wrong.?

Nimmer, of Los Angeles, said in a telephone interview that he began to ?reconsider that proposition? a decade ago because ?augmentation of the body should not be copyrightable.?

In his legal filing to the judge, he explained why:

The tattoo qualifies as an original ?work of visual art? that may gain??recognized stature,? with the result that a court may enjoin its destruction. See 17?U.S.C. ? 106A(a)(3)(B). After a court invokes that provision to bar him from removing?his tattoo, Mr. Tyson literally may not show his own face to the world; that is, he will be?required to keep Mr. Whitmill?s handiwork spread across his face, regardless of his own?desires. Copyright law thereby becomes the instrument to impose, almost literally, a?badge of involuntary servitude, akin to the mark with which ranchers brand the cattle?they own.

It?s not the first time a tattoo artist has wanted to cash in on infringement allegations. In a 2005 federal case settled out of court, an artist who tattooed NBA star Rasheed Wallace?s right arm sued to stop the forward from ?displaying? the tattoo in Nike advertisements.

Michael Kahn, Whitmill?s attorney, said in a telephone interview there has never been a court verdict about whether a copyright on a tattoo can be enforced. Whitmill has copyrighted the tattoo he inked in 2003 on the former heavyweight champ?s face.

He said he and Warner Bros. have talked settlement, but they weren?t ?serious discussions.?

?Ninety-five percent of civil cases settle,? he said in a telephone interview. ?Whether we?re going to be part of the 5 percent or 95 percent, I don?t know.?
