Exclusive: More money flowing to targeted media (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? U.S. companies will spend nearly $200 billion this year on targeted media such as direct mail, text messages or product placement in video games in a major push to concentrate on narrow, valuable groups of consumers, a new study shows.

Investment group Veronis Suhler Stevenson, which conducts the annual study, forecasts that spending on so-called targeted media will rise by 7.1 percent this year. By 2015, spending will have increased to $272.5 billion, far outpacing growth in the broader economy and making it the fastest growing area of the communications industry, VSS said.

One reason for the trend is the economy, which causes companies with budget constraints to focus on their key customers, the company said. That means, for instance, a brewery may sponsor a local concert rather than put money into a scatter-shot national newspaper advertisement.

Targeted media can include product placement in video games and music videos, event marketing, direct mail, and smartphone messaging, one of the hottest investment areas given the increasing amounts of time consumers are spending on mobile media. Last year, hours spent with mobile media soared by nearly 50 percent.

Not surprisingly, the surge in spending on targeted media comes at the expense of more traditional outlets such as radio, broadcast TV and magazine publishing. At the moment, traditional media makes up about 14 percent of spending on communications. That will drop to 11 percent in 2015.

Over the same period, the share of spending on targeted media will expand from 17 to 19 percent, VVS said.

UN council to take up Palestinian bid Wednesday (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? The U.N. Security Council will meet Wednesday to start the process of formally considering the Palestinian request for membership in the world body, the council president said Monday.

Lebanese Ambassador Nawaf Salam, who holds this month's rotating presidency, made a brief appearance before reporters Monday and issued a statement in English and Arabic. He said the council had met Monday afternoon and decided to take up a decision on referring the issue for further consideration in two days. That will consist of forming a committee to study the Palestinian submission.

The United States has said it would use its Security Council veto to block Palestinian membership should the measure receive the necessary nine of 15 votes. That would keep the membership bid from moving forward to the 193-member General Assembly for the needed two-thirds vote. A vote in the Security Council was not expected for weeks, at the least.

U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity to describe confidential diplomacy, said Monday they were telling fellow council members that there's no rush to act on the bid submitted Friday over U.S. and Israeli objections. The U.S. is also seeking cooperation from other members in persuading the Palestinians not to push for a quick vote.

The U.S. hopes that going slow may allow Israeli-Palestinian peace talks to resume without a confrontation at the world body.

Earlier Monday, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton met with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Makati at the U.N. to make the U.S. argument. Lebanon, the only Arab member of the 15-member Council, is expected to support the Palestinian bid.

Senior U.S. officials said Clinton had made separate, similar calls to the foreign ministers of Colombia and China, both of which hold council seats.

The Palestinian envoy to the U.N. Riyad Mansour said he was grateful to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for quickly forwarding the request to the Security Council. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Friday submitted the application that Palestine become the United Nations' 194th member.

"We hope it will lead to fast action in positively recognizing that Palestine be admitted," Mansour said.

But he admitted that several countries would be coming "under tremendous pressure" not to recognize Palestine as a state and said the Palestinians are sending high-level delegations in the coming days to Bosnia, Gabon and Nigeria ? all council members ? to elicit support for their bid.

Mansour said that the Palestinian leadership will be meeting Wednesday on a subsequent statement by the Quartet of Mideast peacemakers ? the U.S., European Union, Russia and U.N. ? calling for a resumption of peace talks without preconditions within a month and a target for a final agreement by the end of 2012.

Israel and the United States oppose the move to grant U.N. membership to the Palestinians and consider it a step back from long-stalled peace talks, and the U.S. has said it will veto a resolution recommending membership.

Nonetheless, diplomats said the council is moving ahead ? as it does with all applications it receives. The Palestinians have demanded that there be no politically motivated delays.

The council will hold a formal meeting Wednesday to transmit the bid to a committee on admission of new members which includes all 15 council nations, diplomats said, speaking on condition of anonymity because consultations have been private.

A German diplomat speaking on background because the talks were private, said the council had at least reached consensus on the next steps to take, but noted the political focus would now be on the Quartet's efforts.

The Palestinian president turned to the U.N. in frustration after nearly two decades of unsuccessful peace efforts that were derailed at various times by violence, indecision and intransigence. Abbas says he will return to the negotiating table only if Israel halts settlement construction and accepts the pre-1967 War borders as the basis for talks.

The Palestinians want the Security Council to recognize an independent Palestine in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza Strip ? areas captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war. Some 500,000 Jewish settlers now live in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005.

The United States, Britain, France and other council members are likely to try to hold up consideration of the application while they press for a resumption of long-stalled Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, diplomats said.

If the Palestinians fail to win U.N. membership, they can turn directly to the General Assembly, where there are no vetoes and a number of options including seeking to raise their status at the U.N. from a permanent observer to a nonmember observer state. That would give them the possibility of joining U.N. agencies and becoming parties to treaties including the International Court of Justice or the International Criminal Court.

PERUGIA, Italy?? Amanda Knox can't sleep or eat properly as she awaits to know if an appeals court in Italy will uphold or overturn her murder conviction, a friend of the jailed American student said Sunday.

A verdict is expected in early October, capping an appeals trial that began almost a year ago.

Knox was convicted of sexually assaulting and murdering Meredith Kercher, her British roommate in Perugia, and sentenced to 26 years in prison. Knox's boyfriend at the time of the 2007 murder, Raffaele Sollecito of Italy, was convicted of the same charges and sentenced to 25 years.

They deny wrongdoing and have appealed their convictions, issued by a lower court in 2009.

Madison Paxton, a friend from the University of Washington who has moved to Perugia to be close to Knox and visits her in prison regularly, told The Associated Press that Knox has no energy and tires very easily.

"In these days coming towards the end, finding very peaceful moments is hard for her," Paxton said. "Her sleep is very disturbed, her eating is very disturbed."

The 24-year-old Knox has visibly lost weight and appears worn out by four years behind bars. Her lawyers and family have described her as increasingly anxious as she awaits a verdict.

The appeals case continues Monday, when a lawyer representing the Kercher family will make his closing arguments. The lawyer of a man who was implicated in the murder by Knox ? and was briefly jailed as a result of her statement ? is also expected to address the appeals court in Perugia. Both the Kercher family and the man figure as civil plaintiffs in the case.

Later in the week, defense teams will sum up their case.

Knox herself is expected to address the court in a final plea. The letter, dated Aug. 9, was shown on an Italian TV show Sunday night.

Kercher, 21, was stabbed to death on Nov. 1, 2007. Her body ? lying in a pool of blood, her throat slit ? was found the following day in the apartment she shared with Knox.

Prosecutors maintain Kercher died in what had begun as a drug-fueled sexual assault. They have asked the appeals court to stiffen Knox's and Sollecito's penalties and sentence them to life in prison.

Also convicted in separate proceedings was Rudy Hermann Guede, an Ivorian man. Italy's highest criminal court has upheld Guede's conviction and his 16-year prison sentence. Guede denies wrongdoing.

Maathai had all of these, and more.

"It helped that Kofi Annan was African," she says. "It helped the principals [President Kibaki and Raila Odinga] to realize if they were being addressed, it was by one of them. They didn't have to fight over egos. They didn't have to prove that they were the big man, because Kofi Annan was the bigger man."

Fla. millionaire guilty of murdering wife

ORLANDO, Fla.?? A millionaire developer who lived in the same central Florida neighborhood as Tiger Woods and other celebrities was convicted Saturday of murdering his wife in their mansion.

The six jurors deliberated almost 12 hours over two days before finding Bob Ward guilty of second-degree murder. The two-week trial took place in the same courthouse where the Casey Anthony case was tried this summer.

Ward was stoic as the verdict was read. Before the verdict, he hugged his two college-aged daughters as the women wept.

He faces up to life in prison when he's sentenced in November.

Ward was accused of shooting of his wife, Diane, in September 2009. The slaying happened days before she was to give a deposition in a lawsuit alleging that he blew millions of dollars on big houses and expensive cars while his business failed.

Defense attorneys said that Ward's wife was suicidal, and that he was trying to stop her from killing herself. Ward never took the stand in his defense.

During closing arguments Thursday, prosecutor Robin Wilkinson used Ward's own words against him by playing a 911 recording in which he told a dispatcher five times, "I just shot my wife."

The Wards were under tremendous stress from the bankruptcy of his company and a lawsuit over his business practices. A broken wine glass, a wine stain on the patio and a similar stain on Ward's shirt indicated they had been fighting before Diane Ward died, the prosecutor said.

Defense attorney Kirk Kirkconnell told jurors it was against Bob Ward's interests to kill his wife because her death exposed his assets to his creditors.

Bob Ward's company, Land Resource, filed for bankruptcy almost a year before the shooting. He was being sued by an insurance company that accused him of taking more than $20 million from the sale of lots in subdivisions he was building in Tennessee in 2007. The insurance company, which had issued bonds for the subdivisions, said Ward should have used the money to improve the subdivisions, but instead paid off debts and went on a spending spree.

The lawsuit says the Wards used the money to buy their 8,800-square-foot mansion in Isleworth, the same neighborhood where Woods had the notorious SUV crash that revealed his adultery and derailed his golf career.

The lawsuit also says the Wards paid off loans totaling nearly $2.5 million for two houses in Georgia, bought a house on the Georgia coast for $750,000 and purchased several vehicles, including a $140,000 Mercedes-Benz sedan. The lawsuit was dismissed last month because of a lack of action by either side.

Ward's behavior after his arrest also raised eyebrows. A jailhouse video of a visit from his daughter and sister-in-law just days after the shooting showed him cracking jokes and laughing. But the Wards' two daughters have supported their father and were in the courtroom during the trial.

Sure, there are tons of things in need of my attention, but in the constant hustle of life how often do we really get a chance to just sit and be still and enjoy the peace and quiet?? In my case there?s no quiet, because both the dog and the BF are snoring, but it?s close enough.

Wall Street extends gains (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stocks extended gains on Friday, with the S&P at session highs and the Nasdaq up more than 1 percent, led by gains in semiconductors.

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) gained 30.27 points, or 0.28 percent, to 10,764.10. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) gained 9.27 points, or 0.82 percent, to 1,138.83. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) gained 27.95 points, or 1.14 percent, to 2,483.62.

U.N. will take weeks on Palestinian bid: Abbas (Reuters)

AMMAN (Reuters) ? Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said on Saturday he expected the Security Council to finish debating his nation's application for full United Nations membership in weeks, not months.

Speaking to journalists on his plane back from the General Assembly in New York where he presented the request to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Abbas said Security Council members had initially appeared unenthusiastic about discussing the application.

But the mood appeared to change after he made a speech to the General Assembly on Friday, pressing the case for an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel, he said.

The United States, Israel's closest ally, has said it will block the application. Both governments say direct peace talks are the correct way for Palestinians to pursue peace. Washington holds veto power in the 15-member Security Council.

"We are talking about weeks not months," Abbas said of the Security Council deliberations, adding that the process could take a maximum 35 days.

Lebanon's U.N. ambassador said the Security Council would convene on Monday to discuss Abbas's application.

Abbas's statehood bid reflects his loss of faith after 20 years of failed peace talks sponsored by the United States, and alarm at Israeli settlement expansion in occupied land that Palestinians want for a state.

Talking about a return to peace talks with Israel, Abbas said: "We will not deal with any initiative which does not contain a halt to settlement or the '67 borders."

Apart from the U.S. veto threat, it was unclear if the required nine of the body's 15 members would support the bid.

RECRUITING SUPPORT

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad al-Maliki told national radio officials still hoped to garner the required votes.

"Consultations continue, especially with Gabon, Nigeria and Bosnia-Herzegovina, which have yet to define their position," Maliki was quoted as saying.

Abbas told the reporters accompanying him of a tense atmosphere during the week: "We held dozens of meetings with dozens of delegations which were trying to avert our going to the Security Council," Abbas said.

Instead of going to the Security Council, the Palestinians, who have observer status at the U.N., could ask the General Assembly to vote to upgrade them to a non-member state which would give them membership of various U.N. agencies.

The General Assembly vote requires only a simple majority.

In his speech to the General Assembly, Abbas said: "I do not believe that anyone with a shred of conscience can reject our application ... and our admission as an independent state."

But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who spoke shortly afterwards, said peace could be achieved only through negotiations and dismissed the world body as a "theater of the absurd."

QUARTET CALL

After the two men's speeches, the quartet of Middle East peace negotiators -- the United States, Russia, the European Union and the U.N. -- called for a return to direct peace talks.

Netanyahu welcomed the quartet call but said the talks' success depended on an equal willingness from the Palestinians.

"If the quartet is calling for direct talks without preconditions ... I think this is a very important thing ... if there is a will then it will happen and if not, it won't and we have the will, let's hope they (the Palestinians) do too," Netanyahu said in an interview on Israeli Channel 10 recorded on Friday in New York and aired in Israel on Saturday night.

Abbas accepts negotiations are still necessary, but argues statehood will put Palestinians on a more equal footing. Israel sees the U.N. bid as an attempt to erode its own legitimacy.

Palestinians want to establish a state in the Gaza Strip, a coastal enclave controlled by Islamist Hamas who oppose peace talks, and in the West Bank with East Jerusalem as the capital, land Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East War.

After the Dolphins fell to 0-2 on Sunday, Jason Taylor called his teammates together for a closed-door meeting to address some of the problems that he says they need to address to turn their season around. But after that meeting became public, Taylor has another problem.

Taylor said on Thursday that he?s upset that there have been media reports about what he said in the meeting, which obviously means some of his teammates have been telling reporters things that he shared with them in what he thought was a private setting.

?It?s a little disturbing that what was talked about in the locker room to begin with was talked about outside of the locker room,? Taylor said in comments provided by the team. ?That?s a little disappointing to me. There was no media in there so it shouldn?t have been public.?

Taylor said he didn?t reveal anything earth-shattering in the meeting, but he still wishes the meeting would have been kept between him and his teammates.

?That should have been a very private moment,? Taylor said. ?The cat?s out of the bag now.?

Asked by reporters if he regretted what he said, Taylor said he didn?t.

?I didn?t say a whole lot to you guys but . . . things take life on their own and go all these different directions and that?s fine. You guys are going to do what you want to do and that?s fine. To be honest, I really don?t care. I care about the guys in this locker room and trying to find a way to win some games. What I said was true.?

The 37-year-old Taylor, who?s a lot older than most of his teammates, sounded amazed by the way word can spread these days.

?It?s crazy the stuff that is our there now,? Taylor said. ?People tweet and twaht and all this other stuff that?s out. It?s amazing how much information can change hands. I remember as a kid you do that little thing where you tell your buddy a secret and he tells the next person and you tell the next person and five or six down the line it?s a completely different story . . . that?s the world we live in.?

Ultimately, Taylor said, the real problem within the Dolphins organization is the problem that?s reflected in the standings. That?s a problem Taylor said will be addressed on Sunday against the Browns.

?None of that will change until we start winning games, and we plan on doing that here in three days,? Taylor said. ?I believe we?re going to get on this airplane Saturday and go up to Cleveland and kick somebody?s ass.?

Missing planet explains solar system's structure

The solar system once had five giant gaseous planets rather than the four it has today. That's the conclusion from a computer simulation of the solar system's evolution, which suggests the fifth giant was hurled into interstellar space some 4 billion years ago, after a violent encounter with Jupiter.

Astronomers have struggled for decades to explain the solar system's current structure. In particular, Uranus and Neptune couldn't have formed where they are today ? the disc of gas that congealed into the planets would have been too thin at the edge of the solar system to account for the ice giants' bulk.

A more likely scenario is that the planets were packed close together when they formed, and only spread out when the disc of gas and dust from which they formed was used up. The tighter orbits of extrasolar planet systems support this idea.

But the great gravitational bullies of the solar system, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, would not have gone quietly to their new homes. Previous simulations show that at least one planet, usually Uranus or Neptune, should have been ejected from the solar system in the shuffle.

"People didn't know how to resolve that," says David Nesvorny of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado.

Now Nesvorny proposes a solution: a sacrificial ice giant between Saturn and Uranus that takes the fall for its planetary siblings.

Five planets to four

"If you start with five gaseous planets, then you see again that you lose one planet," he says. "In a large fraction of cases, you end up with a good solar system analogue."

Nesvorny ran a total of 6000 computer simulations with four or five gas giants in various initial positions around the sun. His simulated runs started shortly after the gas disc dissipated and lasted for 100 million years, long enough for the planets to settle into their final orbits.

All but 10 per cent of the four-planet simulations wound up with only three left, he says. But in half the five-planet simulations, they ended with the four in a solar system that looks remarkably like our own. The best results occurred when the fifth planet started off between Saturn and Uranus and ended up being ejected after an encounter with Jupiter. His work has been accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal Letters.

The five-planet scenario solves a few other mysteries as well. For the inner rocky planets to survive intact while the outer gas giants jockeyed for position, some previous simulations show that Jupiter must have "jumped" from a position closer to the sun to its current orbit.

"This jumping Jupiter theory is very difficult to achieve for the four-planet system. But it's a natural consequence of the five-planet system," Nesvorny says. If Jupiter flung the lost ice giant from the solar system, it would have lost angular momentum and receded from the sun. "That comes for free from the set-up."

The reshuffling could also have disturbed the still-forming Kuiper belt and Oort cloud ? reservoirs of proto-planets that lie beyond the current orbit of Neptune ? flinging debris toward the inner solar system. That could explain the period of violence thought to have occurred 4 billion years ago, when the moon gained most of its craters. This is the period astronomers call the "late heavy bombardment".

Lone wolf

The long lost planet may still be out there. In May, astronomers in Japan announced that they had spotted lonely planets wandering through the dark space between stars. These lone wolfs may be even more common than star-bound worlds, the team reported. If the fifth gas giant is still out there, it will be one of the wandering exoplanets.

Today's planets may have had other siblings as well. Previous researchers have suggested that a fifth rocky planet may have been ejected from an orbit between Mars and Jupiter, and that super-Earths may have been swallowed by Jupiter or Neptune.

"Our solar system looks calm and quiet now, but we pretty much know that it had this violent past," Nesvorny says. "The question is, how violent was it?"

Nesvorny has had several suggestions from colleagues for a name for the new planet. These include Hades, the unseen god of the underworld from Greek mythology, and "Thing 1" from Dr Seuss's book The Cat in the Hat. The latter leaves open the possibility for a "Thing 2" if future work shows the need for more than one planet. But he is not yet persuaded. "I'm not sure I like any of them," he admits.

THE BEATLES Rubber Soul music review by thehallway

This is where things start to get really interesting for The Beatles, with Rubber Soul being more in the folk-rock vein than the Merseybeat style. The songs are really good, and tasteful, which is the most important thing. But there is also some very interesting developments here that would lead to all manner of future musical avenues (including progressive rock). Yes, I'm talking about the sitar on 'Norwegian Wood'.

'Drive My Car' is a catchy number with a cool groove and some nice guitar work. Vocals come complete with "beep beep!" cliche. The aforementioned 'Norwegian Wood' is one of Lennon's finest so far; a warm slice of pure folk that would influence bands like The Byrds and Fairport Convention. 'You Won't See Me' has another great Paul melody that is difficult to ignore. It's also quite long for a Beatles tune. Then there is 'Nowhere Man', which isn't bad but gets quite annoying after a few listens. Lennon starts to get philosophical on this track and would take this further on Revolver. 'Think For Yourself' is a mediocre Harrison composition, saved by Paul's nifty fuzz bass, while 'The Word' speaks of the same word in Yes's 'Time And A Word'. This song is one of the band's funkiest. Side one closes softly with the charming 'Michelle', the obligatory acoustic Paul ballad for this album. It's as beautiful as 'Yesterday', and there's a bass solo; what more could we ask for?

Ringo dutifully sings his allocated song on Rubber Soul, the country-influenced 'What Goes On'. It's probably the dullest song on the album, but Lennon's dark ballad 'Girl' immediately raises the quality back up again. 'I'm Looking Through You' is a simple folk ditty but it's one of my favourite Beatles songs ever, probably because of the melody again. Paul is a master at creating medlodies. The icing on the cake has to be those Hammond organ stabs, playing edgy "Gershwin chords" at the end of each chorus, by Ringo no less. 'In My Life' is a fairly downbeat song, but it's very reflective. George Martin's sped-up piano solo is the highlight. 'Wait' is nothing special, and I wasn't surprised to find out that it was a leftover from the Help! sessions. George's 'If I Needed Someone' has a famous transatlantic riff, and is one of his better songs, although a year later he would deliver what he was really capable of. The closing 'Run For Your Life' is a bit of a let down. A forgettable tune with strangely murderous lyrics.

There is plenty of pop on Rubber Soul, but also heavy dosages of folk, skiffle and pure rock. The album's main draw is the band's increasing use of unconventional instruments, although later, more adventurous album's like Sgt Pepper would not capture the friendly intimacy of this record. As with almost every Beatles album, they struggle to give us 14 amazing songs, but there are probably 8 or 9 here.
