Judge tells troubled actress, 'Stop nightclubbing and focus on your work.'

Lindsay Lohan got some good news on Thursday when she appeared in Los Angeles Superior Court and a judge formally ended her lengthy supervised probation from two 2007 DUI arrests. Wearing a powder blue pants suit, the troubled actress earned praise for completing her court-mandated counseling sessions and 480 hours of community service.

According to the Los Angeles Times, at the final probation status check in for Lohan in connection with a shoplifting conviction and probation violations from the 2007 arrests, Judge Stephanie Sautner said Lohan had finished her obligations for counseling and community service in "short of a year and she has done everything this court asked her to do."

The actress completed the final counseling sessions and community service work at the Los Angeles County morgue earlier this week. Sautner then announced that the five years of probation for the DUI case were officially over and that she was putting Lohan on unsupervised probation for the shoplifting incident until May 2014.

"The only terms for you are for you to obey all laws," Sautner said.

"You don't need to come to court anymore." In addition to countless court appearances, Lohan has been jailed several times
 for violations stemming from drug use to failing to do her required community service.

Clearly pleased, Lohan, 25, told the judge, "I just wanted to thank you for being fair. What you've done has really opened a lot of doors for me."

Lohan has been working on getting her career back on track, recently appearing in an episode of "Saturday Night Live",
 booking a "Glee" gig
 and signing up to play Elizabeth Taylor
 in a TV movie.

But, before the hearing ended, Sautner had one more piece of advice for Lohan. "Stop nightclubbing and focus on your work," she counseled.

Music Director Grant Llewellyn and the North
Carolina Symphony present ?Grant?s Postcards from Home,? a
program of celebrated 20th- and 21st-century music from
Llewellyn?s native land, Wales. The concerts take place in
Wilmington?s Kenan Auditorium on Thursday, April 19 and in
downtown Raleigh?s Meymandi Concert Hall on Friday and Saturday,
April 20-21. All three concerts begin at 8:00 p.m.

On April 19, UNC-Wilmington?s Dr. Barry Salwen leads a pre-concert
talk on the music inside Kenan Auditorium beginning at 6:50 p.m.

In Raleigh, Dr. Randolph Foy of North Carolina State University
will present a pre-concert talk in the Swalin Lobby of Meymandi
Concert Hall on Friday, April 20 at 7:00 p.m., while Catherine
Brand of WUNC-FM hosts the concert?s special guest, harpist Catrin
Finch, among others, for ?Meet the Artists? on Saturday, April
21 at 6:30 p.m.

The notion of an evening of works by Welsh composers was first
suggested to Llewellyn by audience members at a post-concert
discussion. Though skeptical at first, the conductor soon warmed to
the recommendation. ?As the idea of this concert developed,? he
says, ?I was very keen to represent a cross-section of Welsh
composers with a variety of names (some more pronounceable than
others!)?

Also featured on the program is Catrin Finch, a gifted Welsh
harpist praised worldwide for her ?deep musical insight? and
?impeccable rhythmic poise.? H.R.H. Charles, The Prince of Wales
appointed Finch Official Royal Harpist in 2002, saying of her,
?When I re-established the ancient tradition of appointing a
harpist to The Prince of Wales, little did I imagine that I would
find someone with such a rare and special talent as Catrin. She is
a credit to Wales, and I could not be more proud of her.?

?Grant?s Postcards from Home? includes work by William
Mathias, the first Welsh composer of which Llewellyn was aware and,
later, met. ?I first played his Celtic Dances when I was eleven
years old and a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Wales,?
he says. The Symphony will perform Mathias?s Symphony No. 3, his
final major work.

The evening also includes music by two of the exciting young
generation of Welsh composers: Ceiri Torjusson?s Momentum and
Pwyll ap Si?n?s Gwales. The latter was written in memoriam of
Mathias, with whom Pwyll studied. ?It?s a take on Mozart?s
Requiem which was one of Mathias?s favorite works,? says
Llewellyn, ?and you will recognize elements of it in Gwales.?

Born in Cardiff, Torjusson is a fluent Welsh speaker, and though
classically trained, he has played in and arranged for various
soul, jazz, funk and disco bands. He has composed scores for nine
independent feature films and written additional music for a number
of high-profile movies such as Die Hard 4.

The final composer featured on the program is Karl Jenkins,
destined to be, ?in my opinion, the most performed composer of the
21st century,? says Llewellyn. ?He is maddeningly popular with
an unerring ear for what audiences enjoy. His Over the Stone
Concerto for Harp and Orchestra is an absolute winner and with
Catrin Finch to perform it, this work will become an audience
favorite.?

Regular tickets to the Duke Medicine Classical Series Raleigh
performances of ?Grant?s Postcards from Home? on Friday and
Saturday, April 20-21 range from $33 to $48, with $30 tickets for
seniors.

Regular tickets to the Wilmington Series performance on Thursday,
April 19 range from $33 to $48.

My Retail Furniture Business Closed - Now What? | Furnishings and ...

U.S. Retail Furniture Dealers and home goods retailers have been hurt by several things in the past few years. Small business owners in retail furniture and home furnishings have been forced out of business

At first it was competition from big box stores like Target and specialty super-chains like Restoration Hardware and Z Gallery. Cheap imported knock-offs of American and European designed furniture appeared everywhere, at prices designed to eliminate the competition.

Then the slowdown in housing and the end of home refinancing took its toll. If you've been in the furniture business a while, as I have, you know that people simply stopped spending a while ago, before reports of a "possible recession" began to surface.

Smaller boutique and specialty furniture stores began closing, and they were followed by huge furniture chains including Wickes, which closed its 38 stores nationwide.

Have you been affected by any of the above? I was. It changed my life.

For 17 years I owned a small group of retail furniture specialty stores in Chicago and Southwest Michigan. I sold exotic furniture from all over the world, unusual home furnishings and art. The retail stores were like mini-museums with price tags, and we had a great following.

However, my best selling furniture designs started showing up in some of the big stores mentioned above. Not exactly the same furniture, and definitely not the same quality, but to undiscerning customers, the "look" was apparently close enough. And the competition forced me to sell many formerly profitable items a loss.

I had to be on the lookout for new furniture suppliers to find items to replace the furniture designs which had been ripped-off.

Then it happened. It seems that most of my furniture sales had been to either buyers of new homes or refinancers of old ones. It was the start of the decline in the housing market. My warehouse was full of furniture. It was enough to last two to three months, given the turnover in my furniture stores.

I wasn't prepared for what happened. That inventory lasted almost three years!

The end of my furniture businesses was in sight, but I struggled to stay afloat. When employees left, I didn't replace them. I became a slave to my stores, which were open seven days a week.

I cut back every expense I could. But the rents still went up every year. Eventually I decided to close each store as the leases were up for renewal. My landlords all wanted five to ten year commitments, with escalation clauses. That firmed the decision.

So, I was left with no stores and no source of income. Not a pretty scenario.

I started looking for what would be the next venture. It had to be something with no inventory, rent, overhead or employees. A friend had introduced me to a network marketing company a few years earlier, but that opportunity was simply too slow-growth for what I wanted. My goal was to find something which could replace the six-figure income I was getting from my furniture stores, and do it quickly!

After months of research, I finally found what I was looking for. Top Tier Direct Sales. I found a company which specialized in selling high-end products on the internet, and signed on.

I learned internet marketing from the company's excellent trainers, and was set up in my new business in a few weeks. Sales started rolling in the next month. Barnes scores 5 in OT, NCarolina beats Ohio 73-65

ST. LOUIS (AP) ? Awful all night, Harrison Barnes came through when North Carolina needed him most.

Barnes scored five of his 12 points in overtime and the top-seeded Tar Heels escaped a huge upset with a 73-65 victory over 13th-seeded Ohio on Friday night in the Midwest Regional semifinals.

Ohio, trying to become the first team seeded 13th or worse to make the regional finals since the NCAA tournament expanded in 1985, had a chance to convert a three-point play that would have given the Bobcats the lead with 25 seconds left in regulation. Walter Offutt missed from the line, however, and Ohio went 0 for 6 from the field in the first overtime of this year's tournament.

"One free throw away," Offutt said. "As a leader on this team, I take responsibility that I've got to hit that free throw. ... It just feels terrible to kind of let my team down in that sort of way."

Tyler Zeller finished with 20 points and a career-high 22 rebounds for North Carolina, which sorely missed injured point guard Kendall Marshall. The Tar Heels had three players with double-doubles for the first time in an NCAA tournament game: Reggie Bullock had 17 points and 10 boards, and John Henson had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Offutt led the Bobcats (29-8) with 26 points, including 18 from 3-point range, and Nick Kellogg added 14. But D.J. Cooper, who had averaged 20 points in the first two tournament games, finished with just 10 on 3-of-20 shooting.

North Carolina (32-5), which has won 11 straight in the regional semifinals, plays the winner of North Carolina State-Kansas on Sunday afternoon.

"It means a heck of a lot," coach Roy Williams said moments after his team escaped, "but we've got to play better than we did today."

The Tar Heels barely advanced without Marshall, perhaps their most irreplaceable player and the steadying hand behind their fast-paced attack. His absence clearly showed.

Williams said he didn't think Marshall would be able to play Sunday, either.

"I don't think so 'cause he still hasn't done anything, but North Carolina's going to play on Sunday. We're happy about that," he said.

Barnes was dismal, flirting with a season low in scoring as he went 3 for 16, missing from inside, outside and everywhere in between. But his teammates weren't much better, turning the ball over a season-high 24 times and shooting just 40 percent, six percentage points below their average. Worse, they could never get a handle on the smaller, quicker Bobcats.

"Probably the ugliest win I've ever been a part of," Reggie Bullock said. "But we won the game and, hopefully, we'll do better on Sunday."

After trailing by as much as 15 in the first half, Ohio got hot from long range and gave the Tar Heels almost more than they could handle. Ohio, a 10?-point underdog, was 8 of 13 from 3-point range in the second half, with Offutt doing most of the damage. He made a 3-pointer to start a 14-5 run and hit two more during the stretch, which pulled the Bobcats to 42-41 with 10:23 to play.

After Zeller's layup and a dunk by James Michael McAdoo, Cooper hit his only 3 of the game. Kellogg came right back with another to give Ohio its first lead, 47-46, with 8:28 to play, and the Ohio faithful ? plus all the new fans the underdogs picked up ? went into a frenzy.

The teams traded leads, neither able to put the other away. When Barnes missed badly on a 3 with 1:17 to play, the crowd taunted him with chants of "Air-ball! Air-ball!" But Williams could be heard yelling "One stop!" at his team, and the Tar Heels got it when Cooper missed a jumper at the other end.

Bullock then drilled a 3 to give North Carolina a 63-61 lead with 39 seconds left, but Offutt ? who else? ? scored on an off-balance drive and drew a foul by Stilman White, Marshall's fill-in, in the process. Offutt's foul shot was way left, the only free throw the Bobcats missed all night, and Zeller grabbed the rebound.

The Tar Heels worked the shot clock down to the very last seconds, but Barnes lost the ball and Offutt came up with it. He flipped the ball to Cooper, who raced to midcourt and launched a prayer. It caromed off the rim, sending the game into overtime.

Kellogg's father, Clark, calling the games in Atlanta for CBS, smiled as he watched the final plays.

"Overtime," he said, clapping.

But the Bobcats had nothing left. Bullock opened the extra period with a 3 and Barnes came right back with a jumper. After Kellogg made a pair of free throws to cut it to 68-65, Barnes made a pair of his own and Ohio could never get any closer.

"Awful proud of our guys for the way that they fought," Ohio coach John Groce said. "But as I told them in the locker room, there's nothing I can say to them at this point that's going to take away the sting of getting beat in that one. They've got a lot of pride and they believed all year that we could compete and beat anybody that we played. That was no different heading into tonight's game."

Anonymous hackers block Mexico pope visit sites

MEXICO CITY (AP) ? The hacker group Anonymous in Mexico crashed at least two of the websites for Pope Benedict XVI's upcoming visit to Mexico on Thursday, claiming the papal visit is a political move to support the conservative National Action party.

Samuel Najera, spokesman for the Mexican Episcopal Conference, said its web page on the papal visit was blocked by "a cyber attack."

"We have been aware of the threat that has been making the rounds on social networks, that was brought to fruition today," Najera said. "This is part of a dynamic these days of a lack of safety and acts of intolerance toward certain groups."

"For the moment, this does damage to the logistics" of the papal visit, Najera said.

The site contained information on the pope's planned activities starting Friday in the north-central state of Guanajuato, which is governed by President Felipe Calderon's National Action Party, or PAN.

The Anonymous IberoAmerica website, which has been a channel of communication for such hacker "ops" in the past, said the site crashes were the result of Anonymous operations with names such "Pharisee" and "freeloader."

Anonymous Mexico said in a video posted on social media sites that the pope's visit will cost Mexicans money that could be better spent on the poor, and is meant to support the PAN in the July 1 presidential election. PAN candidate Josefina Vazquez Mota is trailing front-runner Enrique Pena Nieto of the Institutional Revolutionary Party by at least 10 percentage points in most polls on the race.

The official campaign season starts at the end of this month.

The pope's "visit comes precisely at the start of the electoral campaigns," said the faceless Anonymous figure in the video. "The PAN will take this as a political weapon to win the votes of millions of Catholics in Mexico."

Guanajuato is 93.8 percent Roman Catholic, the highest of any state in Mexico.

When asked about the timing of the pope's visit, Calderon's office released a March 11 press release noting that Calderon invited the pope in 2007.

Some people have also questioned the pope's decision not to come to liberal Mexico City, where legislators have legalized abortion and gay marriage in the federal district. The Vatican has said the pope cannot be at high altitudes. Mexico City is about 7,300 feet (2,225 meters) above sea level.

Another website with information on where to stay in Guanajuato and how to attend papal events was also crashed. That site was registered to Juan Carlos Mata Ruiz and a group called NIC Mexico.

The website of the Guanajuato state government was also out of service Thursday, the state press office acknowledged, but it would not say whether that was a result of hacking or a cyber attack.

New Jersey mayor admits he never served in Vietnam

A South Jersey mayor whose military record was called into question has admitted he never served in Vietnam.

Stafford Township Mayor John Spodofora apologized for misleading anyone and told the township committee meeting Tuesday that his ?feet were not in Vietnam.?

Spodofora read a statement in which he said he has ?said and implied things? that he should not have. Spodofora apologized to township Republican Club President Martha Kremer who raised questions about the mayor's military service after announcing she was running for office.

Military records obtained by The Press of Atlantic City showed the mayor served in the Navy from 1966 until 1973. The 66-year-old was a cryptographer assigned to an office or submarine in the Caribbean and Mediterranean.

Rick Santorum?s campaign released this position paper on Santorum?s campaign website.? It is undated and unsigned, but it speaks in the first person, using ?I,? so I?ll infer Santorum approved it.?? Enforcing laws against illegal pornography

America is suffering a pandemic of harm from pornography.? A wealth of research is now available demonstrating that pornography causes profound brain changes in both children and adults, resulting in widespread negative consequences. Addiction to pornography is now common for adults and even for some children.

A pandemic?? What measurable harm does?Santorum?cite???Santorum does not cite one peer-reviewed study as a point of authority.? If this was a high school English essay, it would fail for making only claims, but citing no points of authority.? A ?wealth of research??? How about naming one respected research study or paper?? Profound damage to the brain?? Like what?? This is such snake oil salesmanship.? Negative consequences?? Such as??? Porn ?addiction? is common?? How about giving some data?? Even if adults are ?addicted? to sexual imagery, is this a problem?? We don?t suggest men who want sex regularly have a sexual ?addiction? problem.? A regular, consistent, and healthy appetite for sexual stimulation is not an addiction.? It?s a disservice to people who genuinely have addiction problems to characterize a regular?appetite for sexual imagery as an addiction.

The average age of first exposure to hard-core, Internet pornography is now 11.?Pornography is toxic to marriages and relationships. It contributes to misogyny and violence against women.? It is a contributing factor to prostitution and sex trafficking.

What?s the average ?first exposure? children have to violent actions where people or cartoons maim or kill each other?? Is there any reputable study that suggests a child is measurably harmed from viewing hard-core (or soft-core, or intermediate to middleweight-core) sexual imagery?? To answer this rhetorical question:? No, there is not.? It?s all speculation from fearmongers like Santorum.??Is pornography?toxic to marriages and relationships?? No, it is not commonly harmful to marriages where ?pornography? is not presumed to be a negative thing.? Many more marriages would probably dissolve if men did not have regular sexual imagery?to address their more frequent (on average) sexual drives.? Men can safely masturbate in the privacy of their homes, not damaging their relationship commitments, and reducing their number of partners and the transfer rates and prevalence of STDs.? Porn doesn?t contribute to violence against women any more than ?Law & Order? or the next summer action movie or horror flick.? It is a far healthier thing to allow people to consider their curiosities through viewing fictional content than for them to try everything in real life.? Watching ?Harry Potter? doesn?t contribute to the prevalence of wizardry.

Every family must now be concerned about the harm from pornography. As a parent, I am concerned about the widespread distribution of illegal obscene pornography and its profound effects on our culture. ? For many decades, the American public has actively petitioned the United States Congress for laws prohibiting distribution of hard-core adult pornography.

Who is Santorum going to set up on the ?Porn-Core Rating Committee????Which of his buddies will get that fortunate appointment where they sit in a dark room together, or separately in the privacy of their cubicle and computer monitor, to evaluate the literally millions of new sexual imagery videos and photographs created by Hollywood, the international porn industry, the fashion industry, and amateur photographers and videographers?? What a fuckin? joke.? Pun intended.? The ?American Public,? at least a majority of them, has?not petitioned Congress for laws prohibiting hard-core porn ? at least not for the last few decades.??Men in general?have not had a free hand to sign the petition ? at least not since the advent of the home PC and a fast internet connection.? If the American Public really wanted this to happen, such a movement would have already virally set Facebook ablaze.? Conservatives are so weird on sexual issues sometimes.? It?s like that ?One Million Moms? group ? who by the way, still have only about 45,600 members ? the few trying to control the actions, preferences, and liberties of the many.

Congress has responded.? Current federal ?obscenity? laws prohibit distribution of hardcore (obscene) pornography on the Internet, on cable/satellite TV, on hotel/motel TV, in retail shops and through the mail or by common carrier. Rick Santorum believes that federal obscenity laws should be vigorously enforced.? ?If elected President, I will appoint an Attorney General who will do so.???

Yawn.? First, this is not true ? Congress has not banned the distribution of hard-core porn or any other (insert your favorite porn adjective here) porn.? Second, it?s mindless saber rattling.? Third, if Santorum had?more intelligence, he?d know this is bad politics and misguided social policy ? pandering to an?under-educated social minority ? to the detriment of a diverse majority.

The Obama Administration has turned a blind eye to those who wish to preserve our culture from the scourge of pornography and has refused to enforce obscenity laws. While the Obama Department of Justice seems to favor pornographers over children and families, that will change under a Santorum Administration.?

?Scourge of pornography??? Is that like the ?scourge of teen pregnancy? or the ?scourge of diminishing church attendance??? If Obama?s cool with both healthy families and healthy pornography ? that sounds like a more even-keel, mature, and informed position.

I proudly support the efforts of the War on Illegal Pornography Coalition that has tirelessly fought to get federal obscenity laws enforced.? That coalition is composed of 120 national, state, and local groups, including Morality in Media, Family Research Council, Focus on the Family, American Family Association, Cornerstone Family Council of New Hampshire, Pennsylvania Family Institute, Concerned Women for America, The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, and a host of other groups.? Together we will prevail.

I hope not, because that would be silly nonsense.? It would be like trying to re-institute alcohol prohibition.? It is such a silly aspiration as to be almost not?be worth discussion ? except that a?guy?running for the Republican Presidential candidacy thinks discussing the policy will garner him some more votes.
