Recent Mexico arrests falsely linked to 'El Chapo:' Is US trying to influence elections?

An arrested drug suspect accused the US of pressuring him to claim family ties to wanted drug kingpin 'El Chapo.' Is this US meddling in Mexico, or is this an attempt to exploit mistrust of the US?

By Geoffrey Ramsey,?InSight Crime / June 29, 2012

A man presented by authorities as Alfredo Guzman Salazar is shown to the media in Mexico City, on June 21. The man arrested as the presumed son of Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman is really Felix Beltran Leon, and not Alfredo Guzman Salazar, as the Mexican Navy had presented him, the Attorney General's Office said Friday.

US anti-drug officials in Mexico have been accused of pressuring captured drug suspects to claim to be relatives of the most wanted Mexican drug kingpin in order to influence upcoming presidential elections in the country.

When brothers Felix and Kevin Beltran Leon were arrested on June 22, many news sources incorrectly identified Felix as the son of Joaquin Guzman, alias ?El Chapo.? When his true identity was revealed a day later, it was dismissed as an embarrassing mishap for Mexican authorities.

Now however, it has emerged that there may be more to this initial mix-up. La Jornada reports that the defense lawyer of the brothers, Juan Heriberto Rangel Mendez, is claiming that his clients were offered incentives to pretend that they were related to El Chapo. Mr. Rangel says that the brothers spoke with Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) personnel who said the ruse only had to last until the upcoming July 1 elections, after which they would be freed.

Felix refused to cooperate, according to Rangel, despite the assurance of officers that he would be freed if he did so.

InSight Crime Analysis

Amidst concern over presidential frontrunner Enrique Pe?a Nieto?s commitment to combating organized crime with US assistance, it makes sense that the US would seek to boost the chances of the National Action Party (PAN) candidate by making it seem as though the current PAN government is hot on El Chapo?s trail.

However, the evidence for Rangel?s allegations is extremely flimsy. As proof that his clients spoke with DEA agents, he says Felix claimed that those who questioned him were ?blonde, tall and spoke English,? which is far from indisputable proof and sounds more like a fabrication based on stereotype.

More likely, the claim is an attempt by the lawyer to exploit endemic mistrust of the US and its role in the war on drugs to drum up support for his clients.?Pe?a Nieto is leading PAN candidate?Josefina Vazquez Mota by at least 15 points in the polls, and the US would not likely risk a damaging controversy on a move that would likely have limited effect on that lead.

A look at BlackBerry maker Research in Motion

On Thursday, BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. offered details on layoffs and announced yet another delay in its BlackBerry 10 devices. It also reported disappointing earnings for the latest quarter. On Friday, its stock price fell 19 percent.

RIM faces the most difficult period in its history. RIM, which fathered the ground-breaking BlackBerry in 1999, has hired a team of bankers to help it weigh its options. Those options include partnering with other companies, licensing software and overhauling its business.

Here's a look at recent developments as the company struggles to regain market share lost to Apple's iPhone and devices running Google's Android operating software:

Sept. 15, 2011: RIM reports a sharp drop in net income and revenue in the fiscal second quarter and says it has sold far fewer PlayBook tablet computers than it expected.

Oct. 10: Email and Internet services are disrupted for three days, primarily outside North America. RIM says a crucial link in its infrastructure had failed, and a backup didn't work either. By the third day, other users, including those in the U.S. and Canada, were affected by a backlog of traffic.

Oct. 25: RIM says it is delaying the launch of an upgraded operating system for the PlayBook until February, saying it isn't up to its standards yet. The company also says the new version initially won't have the popular messaging service BlackBerry Messenger. It's the third delay announced since the features were promised in April.

Dec. 2: RIM says it is writing off much of its inventory of PlayBook tablets after it had to sell them at a deep discount. The model originally priced at $500 now costs $200. The company says it's taking a pre-tax charge of $485 million in the just-ended quarter. RIM also says it will sell fewer BlackBerrys in the holiday quarter than in the one that just ended. It also says it won't meet full-year earnings guidance of $5.25 to $6 per share, the third cut in a row.

Dec. 6: RIM says "BlackBerry 10" will be the new name for its next-generation system after the company loses a trademark ruling on its previous name, BBX.

Dec. 15: RIM says new phones deemed critical to the company's future won't be out until late 2012. The company says the BlackBerry 10 phones will need a highly integrated chipset that won't be available until mid-2012, so the company can now expect the new phones to ship late in the year. The company also says BlackBerry sales will fall sharply in the holiday quarter compared with the three months that ended Nov. 26. RIM says it would only ship between 11 million and 12 million BlackBerrys in the fourth quarter, down from 14.1 million in the third quarter.

Jan. 22, 2012: RIM founder Mike Lazaridis and long-time executive Jim Balsillie announce they will step down as co-CEOs. Thorsten Heins, a chief operating officer who joined RIM four years ago from Siemens AG, was named as their replacement. Lazaridis and Balsillie remain on the board.

Feb. 21: RIM finally releases an upgraded operating system for its PlayBook. The free upgrade allows for built-in email, calendar and contacts on the tablet ? features promised within 60 days after the PlayBook's launch last April. The PlayBook had received negative reviews because it launched without an email program and the popular messaging service BlackBerry Messenger. The new version still doesn't include the messaging service.

March 29: RIM says Balsillie has resigned from its board, and two top executives are leaving. RIM also writes down the value of its product inventory again as the company reports a loss of $125 million, its first quarterly loss since fiscal 2005. Heins doesn't rule out a sale, but he says it is not the main direction of the strategic review he's overseeing.

April 26: Newest board member of RIM says a turnaround could take three to five years. Prem Watsa, RIM's third-largest investor, says he sees his investment in the company as a long-term one, adding that RIM's fortunes won't be reversed soon.

May 1: RIM unveils a newly designed smartphone prototype powered by its upcoming BlackBerry 10 system. The prototype BlackBerry has a touchscreen, but no physical keyboard like most BlackBerry models. No update was given on the new system's launch date.

May 2: Company stresses that while the prototype has no physical keyboard, RIM will continue to make some models with one.

May 8: RIM announces hiring of two senior executives from struggling tech companies. Frank Boulben, the new chief marketing officer, comes from LightSquared. Kristian Tear, the new chief operating officer, is from Sony Mobile Communications.

May 29: RIM says it will have an operating loss in the current quarter and significant layoffs this year. The company says it has hired J.P. Morgan and RBC Capital Markets to help evaluate various strategies, including opportunities to partner with other companies and license software.

June 20: RIM says it has started laying off employees as part of a restructuring plan aimed at saving about $1 billion this year.

June 21: Company says the first BlackBerry device running BlackBerry 10 will not have a physical keyboard, only a touch-screen one. Ones with hard keyboards will eventually be made, but the company declines to say when.

Monday: Stock hits lowest level since 2003. Morgan Stanley's Ehud Gelblum says the company is facing a "triple whammy" in the current quarter. Gelblum says RIM's phones are aging, growth in the global smartphone market is slowing, and shipments are likely to decline ahead of the launch of BlackBerry 10 phones.

Thursday: RIM says it's cutting 5,000 jobs, or about 30 percent of its workforce, and delaying the launch of BlackBerry 10 yet again, to the first quarter of next year. It also reported worse results for its latest quarter, which ended June 2, than analysts had expected.

Friday: Stock falls 19 percent to nine-year low.

Researchers develop spray-on batteries

A team of researchers from Rice University has found a way to power almost any object by spraying with a paint that has been formulated to function as a battery.

By Charles Q. Choi, InnovationNewsDaily Contributor,?InnovationNewsDaily / June 28, 2012

Ceramic tiles coated with battery paints and then heat-sealed powered LEDs spelling out "RICE" for six hours in an experiment at Rice University. The lithium-ion batteries can be painted on virtually any surface.

The rechargeable lithium-ion batteries now found in many mobile phones and laptops may one day be sprayed like paint onto virtually any surface, potentially ushering in a new generation of thin, flexible devices, researchers say.

Spray-paintable batteries even might become available to the general public someday at hardware stores, the scientists added.

Lithium-ion batteries power most portable electronics nowadays, but their spiral, jelly-roll-like design generally limits them to rectangular or cylindrical shapes.

['Smart Clothing' Could Become New Wearable Gadgets]

Now researchers have succeeded in painting these batteries onto a diverse range of surfaces, including glass slides, stainless steel, flexible plastic sheets, glazed ceramic tiles, and even the curved side of a beer mug.

"We can convert almost any object to a battery," Neelam Singh, a materials scientist at Rice University in Houston, told InnovationNewsDaily.

He and other researchers spent painstaking hours formulating paints that could function as the separate components of a battery. In their search, they looked at materials as diverse as carbon nanotubes and ultrafine graphite powders. They next painted these ingredients in layers in the proper order onto surfaces to create the batteries.

"Spray painting is already an industrial process, so it would be very easy to incorporate this into industry," Singh said.

Batteries that the researchers printed onto nine ceramic bathroom tiles could readily power 40 red LED lights. One of these battery tiles was topped with a solar power cell that helped charge the batteries, suggesting the researchers could give any surface the capability to both harvest and store energy.

The material onto which the batteries were painted apparently had no effect on the performance of the devices. This suggests this technology could find its way into a wide range of construction materials and household objects.

"You could turn your home into a battery," Singh said.

The researchers do caution that fabricating these batteries requires the use of toxic, flammable and potentially corrosive materials in an oxygen-free and moisture-free environment. Employing safer battery materials along with oxygen- and moisture-resistant paints could allow even the general public to spray-paint batteries.

[Transparent Batteries Help Mobile Devices Go See-Through]

"People paint their homes and cars often," Singh said. "I think it will be possible for people to paint batteries themselves."

The scientists have filed for a patent on their work. They detailed their findings online June 28 in the journal Scientific Reports.

10 Ways Spider-Man Can 'SAVE' India!

A fun take on what would happen if Spidey paid?India a visit!

Illustrations: Uttam Ghosh

With his red and blue bodysuit, web-slinging and wall-crawling ways, the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man has saved New York City from evil scientists, horrid crooks and mechanical creatures.

He's just the kind of upright superhero we look for in a leader and protector but, alas, the first commandment of fantasy doesn't allow him to step out of the realm of make-believe.

But, what if Spider-Man made a trip to India? Okay, so maybe his innate trouble-tracking Spider-Sense would be thoroughly assaulted and demolished within a matter of seconds? And Marvel Comics might sue us for messing up with their 50-year old icon.

Erase such morbid thoughts and imagine what if he came here with the sole purpose of playing saviour? Needless to say, the possibilities are immense since our problems are never-ending. He'll be staying in Mumbai, of course. Where else will he find enough highrises to do his traditional swing from building to building?

The Amazing Spider-Man has hit the screens today. Just the time, we thought, to take a fun, irreverent look at how Spidey could do his bit for India in a hypothetical scenario.

Spidey alert!

There are a lot of conspiracy theories buzzing around the recent fire breakout in Mumbai's Mantralaya building.?Enter Spidey and he'd probably fling in and out with all the files in tow and the corrupt perpetrators would have to deal with more heartburn than anything else.

Like Spidey would say, Pwned!

Why Ginger Is On The Top Of My Herb List | Acupuncture Holistic MMA

Ginger has many health benefits

? LotusHead, www.pixelpusher.co.za

Ginger is a well known herb and a personal favorite of mine. It?s actually one of the most commonly consumed dietary herbs in the world, and has been used for thousands of years for colds, nausea, arthritis, and migraines just to name a few conditions1. With a pungent and spicy taste, it can be integrated into many dishes to add taste and flavor to your meal. On top of that, it has extraordinary healing properties and it should integrated into our diet when needed. So I decided to dedicate this post to the?magnificent uses of ginger in hopes of inspiring future ginger maniacs.

Ginger and Chinese Medicine

Known as Sheng Jiang (pronounced SHUNG JI-UNG) in Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine (TCM), this powerful herb has been used traditionally for cold conditions, digestion problems, phlegm, and in some cases fluid retention. According to the Materia Media (which is like the holy grail for Chinese Medicine Herbology), ginger can be used fresh which is used more for colds and vomiting, while in a dried form (known as Gan Jiang) is used more to warm up the body and promoting energy from a very low state.

I also prescribe ginger to my patients to help with promoting circulation. From my experience drinking ginger tea is great for warming up the hands and in my experience also helps with promoting the liver qi (?chee?) as well. Liver qi helps your body qi flow smoothly, thus causing stable mood, helping with proper menstrual cycle, and promoting health circulation. Here is a good?blog post on liver qi?I wrote a while back if you want to find out more information about the liver function in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Research and Ginger

There are an abundant amount studies examining the benefits of ginger on many different types of conditions, ranging from its affects on bacteria to it?s numerous effects with certain types of tumors and cancers. There were more studies than I had thought, so I decided to look at some more recent trials and reviews. In one study a natural compound called?6-Gingerol was shown to inhibit a certain type?colon cancer cell2. These results were found through tests done on cancer cultures that were ?starved? for about 24 hours and then incubated with the 6-Gingerol compound. This compound is actually one of the more well known and researched compounds in ginger and may play a role in suppressing other types of cancer cells as well.?In other studies ginger has been shown to inhibit the growth of hepatoma cells (liver cancer cells) as wells as increase the rate of apoptosis (programmed cell death, basically when the clock says it?s time to go and check out)3.?

One of the most widest uses of ginger?is for it?s ability to treat nausea and vomiting. It is commonly recommended for nausea and morning sickness in pregnant women.?Several randomized, double-blind clinical trials have shown that ginger can be used safely during pregnancy to prevent nausea and vomiting4. Ginger can also be used for motion sickness and nausea side effects from chemotherapy.

Incorporating Ginger Into Everyday Life

Ginger and Green Tea health benefits

? Thomas Csizik

There are some considerations to take when using ginger which will maximize its benefit to you.

Ginger tea is great in the winter. Try starting off with a cup with about 3 small slices, about a quarter in diameter and about an eighth (1/8) of an inch thick. and see how you feel through out the day. If you need a second serving later on try not to have it too late at night.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine herbs rarely prescribed alone, rarely. We theorize that everything needs balance, and combining herbs makes them more powerful and reduces side effects. Green tea is a good mix with ginger because nearly everyone has some lying around in the cupboard. Ginger is considered a hot herb in TCM while green tea is more on the cooling side so they balance each other out.

You can also incorporate ginger into your prepared and cooked meals. About.com has a list of great recipes that use ginger, so find a dish?that fits your taste buds and start cooking.

This article is just scratching the surface of the capabilities of ginger, or ultimately herbs in general. This is an herb I use myself, and though it may not be the herb to use for everyone, it will definitely continue to be a common household pantry item ready to be used for general colds, improved vitality, or just good ol? tummy aches.

Oil jumps to above $80 after EU deal on banks

The price of oil soared after European leaders took unexpectedly aggressive steps to support the region's beleaguered banking sector.

Benchmark U.S. crude jumped by $4.49, or 5.8 percent, Friday to $82.18 per barrel in New York while Brent crude rose by $4.15, or 4.5 percent, to $95.51 per barrel in London. A day earlier, oil hit its lowest level since early October.

Major stock markets also jumped nearly 2 percent in morning trading.

Oil surged after eurozone leaders agreed to pump bailout money directly into banks instead of onto the balance sheets of already stressed governments. The decision eased fears of widespread European bank failures that could have hampered lending in other parts of the world.

The measures were a breakthrough for Europe, whose leaders have repeatedly clashed over how to deal with hefty government debts. The deal was struck as borrowing rates in Spain and Italy surged to levels that were considered unsustainable.

The debt crisis has loomed over stock and energy markets for almost two months.

"All of a sudden we're not worried about the Spanish and Italian banks going bankrupt over the weekend," said Phil Flynn, an oil analyst with Price Group.

Elsewhere, European nations prepared to stop buying Iranian oil starting Sunday in an effort to pressure the country to open its nuclear facilities to inspection. Western nations fear that Iran is building a nuclear weapon; Iran denies the claim.

International sanctions already have cut Iranian exports by about 700,000 barrels per day. Experts said it's unclear how much more of Iran's oil will be taken off the market due once the embargo goes into effect. A further reduction in global supply could increase prices for the remaining oil.

Meanwhile, retail gasoline prices fell to $3.353 per gallon in the U.S., the lowest since Jan. 6, according to auto club AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service.

In other futures trading, heating oil added 10.52 cents to $2.6571 per gallon and wholesale gasoline added 7.38 cents to $2.688 per gallon. Natural gas rose by 3.9 cents to $2.761 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Obama care plan and the markets | Trading and Investing 4U

Obama care plan and the marketsInvestors endured another roller coaster ride last night as they waited for the results of the Obama care plan and global markets bounced all over the place. There were a few announcements like the health care plan decision and other global events that are being blamed for the turbulence, but as usual the majority of fingers are pointing at Europe as doubt arise as to whether they will actually come up with some meaningful, effective policy initiatives during the summit they have been attending.

For U.S. Stocks The NASDAQ, the Dow Jones and the S&P 500 all began the trading day by jumping off a cliff and investors had to watch as prices plummeted, only to have things rebound in the second half of the day. Nevertheless, the major indices in the U.S. all finished down and the majority of the markets in Europe did the same; the Dow Jones, the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ finishing, .20 percent, .21 percent and .90 per cent respectively.

Many investors yesterday were waiting in anticipation for the Supreme Court ruling which would decide the fate of the Health Care Plan the Obama administration had put together. In the end the Supreme could upheld the plan and various pharmaceutical stocks and health care management stock were affected accordingly.? While some analysts believed the days nose dive in the beginning was due to this announcement it was clear there was more to it than the Supreme Court ruling as pharmaceutical and health stocks only make up around one percent of the major indices. So, all eyes turned to Europe and the summit. The ten thousand summits from the past had managed to come up with little to no policies of any effect and analysts believed that would likely be the case today as well.

Big Picture

The ruling on the Obama care plan would likely only have affected a small percentage of stocks in the major U.S. indices. It may be that we will see some more downside should the results from Europe be as anticipated.

KERALA QUESTIONED STATEMENT OF ANAND SHARMA ON FDI ...

?

KERALA QUESTIONED STATEMENT OF ANAND SHARMA ON FDI IN RETAIL
CAIT SENT MEMORANDUMS TO CHIEF MINISTERS
In the matter of allowing FDI in Retail, repeated statements have been issued by the
Government recently. One such statement of Union Commerce Minister Shri Anand
Sharma wherein he claimed the support of Kearala Government for allowing FDI has
been contradicted by Kerala Chief Minister Shri Oomen Chandy who has said that State
Government had not written to the Centre supporting the FDI as claimed by Mr. Sharma.
Such a misleading statement of Shri Sharma has questioned the creditability of the
Government.
Why the Union Government is in great haste to allow FDI in Retail by overlooking the
ground realties of Indian Retail Trade is a matter needs a probe-said the Confederation
of All India Traders (CAIT) which is spearheading a national movement against FDI in
Retail Trade. The Government must clarify the pressures which are forcing for making
such statements. The CAIT has strongly said that any move to allow FDI in Retail will
be protested tooth and nail nationwide by the traders and other Stake Holders of Retail
Trade.
The CAIT has written a communication to Chief Ministers of all States and has sent
them its publication ? FDI in Retail ? Assumptions V/s Facts? in order to apprise them
with the ground realties and detrimental affects of FDI in Retail Trade. The CAIT has
also sought an audience with the Chief Ministers.
The CAIT regretted that on such an important issue, the Central Government did not
think it propoer to talk to Traders who are one of the important constituent of Retail
Trade in a situtation where not only the traders but farmers, labourers, hawkers, consu
mers and other sections of the retail trade are bitterly opposing FDI in Retail Trade.
The CAIT has demanded that the unanimous report of the Parliamentary Standing
Committee submitted on 8th June,2009 to Parliament should be made subject matter
of the discussion on this matter.
For more information please contact CAIT, Secretary General, Mr. Praveen Khandelwal@9891015165,

European plane maker Airbus intends to build its first U.S. plant in Mobile, Ala., a person with knowledge of the plans told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Airbus will assemble its A320 jet there, according to the person, who requested anonymity because a public announcement has not been made. The A320 is a widely used plane flown by U.S. airlines including Delta and US Airways.

An Alabama plant would enable Airbus to produce planes squarely in the territory of archrival Boeing Co. It would likely mean lower production costs compared with Airbus' European A320 production lines in Toulouse, France, and Hamburg, Germany. The company also makes A320s in China.

The plan was reported earlier Wednesday by The New York Times, citing anonymous sources who said that an announcement could come as soon as Monday.

Airbus has said it wants to expand, and that it favors a site in the Southern U.S.

"We have made no secret of our hopes to expand our global footprint, including in the U.S., as we have a very strong market here," said Airbus spokeswoman Mary Anne Greczyn, who added that no decision has been made by the company's board.

An Alabama state legislator, speaking on condition of anonymity, said he's been asked by state officials to be in Mobile on Monday for an industrial announcement involving an airline project.

Airbus is aiming to boost A320 production. The 150-seat plane is generally used on short- and medium-haul flights, and Airbus makes more of them than any of its other planes. They retail for $88 million, although discounts are common for big customers.

Similarly, Boeing is ramping up production of its 737, which competes directly with the A320. Both companies are putting new, more fuel-efficient engines on the planes, hoping to extend their appeal as airlines try to cut their fuel bills. Airbus made its new-engine decision earlier than Boeing and got a big jump on orders.

The U.S. is a growing market for Airbus. American Airlines ordered 260 A320s last year, and US Airways is buying them as well. However, Delta Air Lines went with Boeing 737s in a 100-jet order in August.

Airbus already has a facility in Mobile that employs about 230 people designing and installing interior items such as seats and cabin equipment for its big planes, the A330, the superjumbo A380, and its planned A350.

It has had its eye on possible U.S. expansion for several years. Mobile is where Airbus parent EADS planned to put its assembly line for an aerial refueling plane it wanted to build for the U.S. Air Force, before losing that long-running duel to Boeing in Feb. 2011. The tanker would have been based on the A330, a larger plane than the A320 slated to be built there now.

In March 2011, then-EADS CEO Louis Gallois said that if or when EADS made a move into the U.S., the South would be its favored destination. At the time he said possible locations were Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas.

The plan by Airbus executives to open a plant in Alabama comes a few weeks after Fabrice Bregier took over as Airbus CEO on June 1. The CEO of EADS is now Tom Enders, who previously ran Airbus.

Mobile is already home to several aerospace companies, including ST Aerospace Mobile, Goodrich Aerospace and Star Aviation, and much of the business is based at the 1,650-acre Brookley Aeroplex.

UCLA researchers develop nanoscale microwave oscillators, promise better and cheaper mobile devices

At a size of just 100 nanometers, it may not be much to look at, but a new type of microwave oscillator developed by researchers at UCLA could open the door to mobile communication devices that are smaller, cheaper and more efficient. As PhysOrg reports, unlike traditional silicon-based oscillators (the bit of a device that produces radio-frequency signals), these new oscillators rely on the spin of an electron rather than its charge to create microwaves -- a change that apparently bring with it a host of benefits. That includes a boost in signal quality, and a dramatic reduction in size. The new nanoscale system is fully 10,000 times smaller than current silicon-based oscillators, and can even be incorporated into existing chips without a big change in manufacturing processes. As with most such developments, however, it remains to be seen when we'll actually see it put into practice.

Learn Effective Personal Finance Practices With Our ... - Turnkey Loan

Don?t make the mistake of neglecting to maintain your home or your vehicle in an attempt to save money. Doing maintenance is a way to safeguard yourself from serious problems in the future. By taking care of the things that belong to you will save more money as time passes.

Almost everyone makes mistakes with their finances. You can request a waived fee for a one-time bounced check from your bank. This is usually a one-time courtesy that banks extend to good customers.

If you?re not yet 21 years of age and are looking for a credit card, you should know that things have changed recently. In the past, it was very easy for a college student to get a credit card. You must have a cosigner or an income that can be proven. Read the literature of a credit card offer before you apply for it.

Utility bills are an expense that you must stay on top of to improve your credit rating. Paying them late can damage your credit rating. Your credit rating will suffer if you pay late and you may also pay late fees too. Avoid the troubles that are associated with paying bills late by always paying your bills in a timely manner.

Using small steps can help to rebuild your personal finances. Forgo that daily stop at the cafe and make your own coffee instead. By doing this, it will help keep $25 in your pocket. Replace your auto commute with a public transit ride. Doing this can easily save you a couple hundred dollars every month. You can add this money up to use for any big investments you might have in the future. Those are definitely worth more than a single cup of coffee.

If you want to buy a big-ticket item on credit in the near future, raise your credit score before doing so. There are a couple of ways to do this. You can either take out a small personal loan and repay it on an accelerated schedule, or open a couple of credit cards and build an excellent payment history. Try paying more than your minimum on every bill.

Pay off your credit card accounts with the highest interest rate first. The higher interest cards will cause you the most over time, as it is imperative to reduce these immediately. This is very important, since credit rates are expected to rise soon.

Stop spending money on things that promise you money overnight. Internet marketing, for example, is a field that makes it all too easy to waste more money than one makes back. If you execute what you pay to learn, then your profits will increase greatly.

Invest overseas a bit as well. The easiest way to do this is by getting a mutal fund, a no-load type. This type of mutual fund is diverse and cuts down on the amount of research to do beforehand.

To save money, experiment with name, store and generic brand foods and products. A lot of the time the store brand is almost the same as the original, with a lower price. Compare the ingredients of your favorite brand with the ingredients of the off brand products to see how similar they actually are. Purchasing generic food items can save you money, so give them a try.

Don?t neglect a flexible spending account, if you have one. Flexible spending accounts can really save you cash, especially if you have ongoing medical costs or a consistent daycare bill. With such an account, you can deposit money directly, before it gets taxed. There are rules to set one up; a tax professional can help.

If you are married, you should have the spouse with the best credit apply for loans. If you have bad credit, take the time to build it with a credit card that you pay off regularly. Once you are both happy with your credit score you?ll be able to get loans and spread the debt out more evenly.

As was discussed previously, good money management as well as bad dominates every part of your life. Be sure that you maximize these good things by incorporating these guidelines into your personal finances.

Need A Credit Card? Use This Information

Credit cards have almost become naughty words in our society today. Our dependence on them is not good. Many people don?t feel as though they could live without them. Others know that the credit history that they build is essential, in order to have many of the things we take for granted such as a car or a home. This article will help educate you about their proper usage.

Take advantage of security features that your credit card company might offer. These might include things like adding your picture to your credit card. This is an additional step that merchants can use to verify that you are the person using the card, allowing them to help you keep your card safe from criminal activity.

An important tip when it comes to smart credit card usage is, resisting the urge to use cards for cash advances. By refusing to access credit card funds at ATMs, you will be able to avoid the frequently exorbitant interest rates, and fees credit card companies often charge for such services.

Shred old credit card receipts and statements. You can easily purchase an inexpensive home office shredder to handle this task. Those receipts and statements, often contain your credit card number, and if a dumpster diver happened to get hold of that number, they could use your card without your knowledge.

If you have any credit cards that you have not used in the past six months, then it would probably be a good idea to close out those accounts. If a thief gets his hands on them, you may not notice for a while, because you are not likely to go looking at the balance to those credit cards.

Most people would agree that credit cards have a useful role to play in everyday personal finances. The important thing to understand is that along with the convenience they can offer, comes the necessity of adhering to strict principles of appropriate usage. The tips and guidance contained in this article can provide an important framework for the wise management of your personal finances.

Sky-divers drop from blimp to demo Google Glass eyewear

23 hrs.

Google co-founder?Sergey Brin turned up at the I/O keynote in San Francisco Wednesday, and revealed that a trio of basejumpers were hanging out in a blimp overhead. Brin's instructions: Jump out of the airship, land on the roof of the Moscone Center, and deliver a box containing a pair of the augmented-reality?glasses.?

Because this didn't seem complicated enough, Brin asked for mountaineers to rappel down the walls of the center, then hand off the package to cyclists, who rode into the auditorium, as you can see in the video released late Wednesday:

It was a pretty crazy stunt, though one that didn't reveal much about Google Glass except that it stays on during extreme sports, will come in a variety of styles, and weighs less than a standard pair of sunglasses.

It was also revealed that Google will allow attendees of this week's conference to pre-order a version of Google Glass for $1,500. This model will be a rough edition, not the final product, and is intended for serious developers only.

The VC model is not broken. It's just working too well ... - Pham Capital

To venture, or not to venture.? The venture capital business is going through one if its periodic Hamlet cycles, which seems to happen historically every decade or so.

Since the publication of the Kauffman Foundation report on venture capital last month?which famously declared that the traditional ?investment model is broken??VC has been taking its share of lumps. The Kauffman report places most of the blame on the fundamental structure of VC today, arguing that incentives are not properly aligned between fund managers and limited partners (i.e., investors in venture funds).

Such misalignment almost certainly exists, but I believe it is only part of the story.? I?m not going to wade into all the arguments, many legitimate, about problems in the ways that funds are structured.? Yes, the model can be improved.? But?I believe there are bigger, systemic causes at work.? Therefore, let?s step back and take a bigger picture view.

When we look at the venture industry as an entire ecosystem, rather than as a bunch of individual firms or a portfolio of deals, we can draw a surprising conclusion: lower returns are probably what we should expect when the VC industry is performing efficiently, rather than inefficiently.? Over a series of three columns, I will try to explain why, what it means, and how to seek better returns for investors.

Argument #1: The risk premium does not function in practice as it does in theory.

Theoretically, in finance, higher risk means higher reward.? This is a basic proposition of modern portfolio theory.? This principle seems to hold true across most types of capital.? For example, risk-averse retail bank lending?which requires secured assets and strict capital ratios?tends to generate small returns.? Meanwhile, high-risk private equity (the artist formerly known as leveraged buyouts) tends to generate relatively high returns.? It?s what we call the?risk premium?investors get rewarded for risk.

But in the venture capital business, everything seems to go haywire.? Risk and reward are not correlated, as a blackboard economist might expect.? As one invests in earlier stages of company growth, the risk premium basically disappears, if not completely inverts.? Here is a diagram from my new book on innovation ecosystems, The Rainforest: The Secret to Building the Next Silicon Valley.

In the left graph, we see what theory says should happen: the earlier you invest, the riskier it gets, and the more money you should make.? In the right graph, however, we see what happens in reality?the risk premium starts to diminish in early-stage venture capital, and then completely vanishes in seed-stage investing.? There is a marked divergence between theory and practice.

Ask most practicing venture capitalists, and they?ll basically affirm the notion that, at a certain point, investing at earlier stages of company development is not rewarded commensurately.? Ask yourself why the world isn?t flush with more seed-stage investors, if the risk premium actually exists?? Moreover, why don?t private investors sink money into basic RD, rather than run away from it?? At a system level, curiously enough, investing in the earliest stages of enterprise formation seems to obey its own laws.

The surprising result from this perspective is that more efficient venture capital markets?in terms of healthy, robust?competition among skilled firms?will naturally see poorer returns, as more firms fight over the deals in a given sector.? Modern portfolio theory says it shouldn?t happen.? Yet it does.

But how could this possibly be?? How could so many brilliant economists get it wrong?? Does this mean that modern portfolio theory is flawed?

Well, I?ll save those answers for my next column.? The answers go to the heart of what makes some venture ecosystems like Silicon Valley generally thrive, while others languish.

Djokovic savors opening day honors on Centre Court

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) ? Being a defending champion at Wimbledon has its perks ? none bigger than the honor of playing the opening match on the freshly manicured lawn of Centre Court.

Despite slipping on the slick grass and falling behind early in the first set, Novak Djokovic quickly gained his footing and played the commanding tennis that took him to his first Wimbledon title and vaulted him to the No. 1 ranking that he still holds.

Last year, after beating Rafael Nadal in the final, Djokovic grabbed some blades of grass and stuffed them into his mouth. This time, he celebrated quietly after defeating another Spaniard, dropping just seven games in a 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 win Monday over former No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero.

"It's a very unique feeling," Djokovic said of stepping onto the sport's most famous stage at 1 p.m. as reigning champ. "I think that's the first time I experienced that in my career. I think this is the only tournament that actually allows you to have information when you're playing 12 months in advance."

Following his loss to Nadal in the French Open final two weeks ago that ended the Serb's 27-match winning streak at Grand Slams, Djokovic came to Wimbledon without any grass-court preparation. He got off to a shaky start and lost serve to fall behind 2-1, but broke right back and took complete command.

"The grass was untouched," he said. "It was soft, so smooth. It was great to play in."

The atmosphere, too, was special when he came onto the court.

"It is quieter than the other center courts of the other Grand Slams," Djokovic said. "But you feel that tradition and the history of tennis, of sport, in this tournament, especially Centre Court. So many legends have won the trophies here, the trophies that made them big tennis stars."

While Djokovic paid tribute to the tradition, he also pulled off a very untraditional bit of gimmickry: taking a golf club with him onto the court.

As part of an inside joke with a sponsor, he pulled a club out of his racket bag and put it on the sideline when he arrived to face Ferrero.

"It was a little funny thing," said Djokovic, whose racket maker gave him a bag that has posts to make it stand like a golf bag. "Being creative, that's all. But fans corrected me right away. They said, 'This is not a golf course.' I said, 'OK.'"

Djokovic has won four of the past six Grand Slam tournaments, breaking up what had been the two-man dominance of Nadal and Roger Federer. The three players have combined to win 28 of the past 29 major titles.

"There is not anymore advantages in ... my favor, Rafa's, Roger's, whenever we are playing each other on any surface," Djokovic said. "We're all kind of equal, in a way. I think we have equal, 50-50, chances to win."

Day 1 passed off without a single rain delay, a relief after one of the wettest Junes on record in Britain.

Other winners included six-time champion Federer, top-seeded Maria Sharapova, four-time Grand Slam champion Kim Clijsters and No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska.

Five-time champion Venus Williams lost and won't be playing in the second round at Wimbledon for the first time since her debut at the All England Club in 1997.

The highest seeded player to fall was No. 6 Tomas Berdych, the 2010 runner-up who lost 7-6 (5) 7-6 (4) 7-6 (4) to 87th-ranked Ernests Gulbis of Latvia.

John Isner, the 11th-seeded American, squandered a match point in the fourth set and was upset in five by Alejandro Falla of Colombia, 6-4, 6-7 (7), 3-6, 7-6 (7), 7-5. The result ruled out a second-round contest between Isner and Nicolas Mahut ? who played the longest match in tennis history here two years ago, and met again in the first round last year.

While Djokovic did the Centre Court honors on Monday, it will be defending women's champ Petra Kvitova's turn on Tuesday, opening against Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan.

Second-seeded Nadal was scheduled up next against Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil, followed by No. 4 Andy Murray against former top-10 player Nikolay Davydenko. On Court 1, fifth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was paired against 2002 champion Lleyton Hewitt, who has slipped to 202nd in the rankings and needed a wild card to enter Wimbledon this year.

A day after her sister was eliminated on Court 2, four-time champion and sixth-seeded Serena Williams was due to play on the same court against Barbora Zahlavova Strycova. Williams openly wondered last year why the sisters were put on Court 2 instead of Centre Court.

Venus Williams was eliminated 6-1, 6-3 by Elena Vesnina of Russia, the latest setback in her return to tennis after being diagnosed with Sjogren's syndrome, an autoimmune disease that can cause fatigue and joint pain.

Williams, who has fallen to 58th in the rankings, lost the first five games to the 79th-ranked Russian and, although she picked up her game and fought hard, was never able to turn the match around. Afterward, she insisted she still has the motivation to return to the top of her game.

"I feel like I'm a great player," Williams said. "I am a great player. Unfortunately I have to deal with circumstances that people don't have to deal with normally in a sport, but I can't be discouraged by that. I'm up for challenges. I have great tennis in me. I just need the opportunity."

The next chance will be the Olympic tournament, which will be played at Wimbledon three weeks after the end of the championships. Venus, who won gold in women's singles and doubles at the 2000 Olympics and bronze in doubles in Beijing four years ago, hopes to play both events again at the London Games.

"At the Olympics, you'll see me here," she said. "I'm planning on it."

Blacknight Announce Over 10000 Irish ... - My Best Web Hosting

Carlow, Ireland (PRWEB) May 16, 2012

Blacknight called for Irish businesses to get online and Irish businesses took up the challenge.

Over 10,000 Irish businesses have signed up for the Getting Business Online (http://gettingbusinessonline.ie/) program in its first year. The initiative is a partnership between Blacknight (http://www.blacknight.com), Google, An Post and the County & City Enterprise Boards aimed at helping Irish small businesses develop an Internet presence by providing the opportunity to create free business websites.

Ronan Harris of Google Ireland states: There are still 30,000 businesses in Ireland without a web presence and we have to continue to reach out to these companies to help them take the first step. But, if we are to generate economic wealth, the real objective must be to get companies transacting business online. This is the holy grail which will ultimately deliver for every business in every townland throughout the country.

Michele Neylon of Blacknight states: We are delighted that weve managed to get over 10,000 businesses in the first year. The power of the economy comes from small business and this program has been all about getting small, Irish businesses to use the Internet to their advantage.

As a part of the Getting Business Online program, Blacknight have created software that allows participating users to build a free website in under 30 minutes. While not intended to replace a professionally built site, they provide a gateway for ?brick and mortar? businesses to gain confidence while conducting business online.

Blacknight not only provide free websites and the software to build them, they also offer free hosting with an .ie, .eu or .com domain name for one year.

Based on Blacknights figures, during the first year, 60% have registered .com, 21% registered .ie, 13% registered .eu and 4.2% .biz.

Neylon adds: Looking back on twelve months of activity, we saw that Irish business are opting for .com domains. It would be great if they were registering .ie domains but weve seen that registrants prefer domains that are easier to register. Throughout 2012 we hope to add new features to make getting online even more attractive to Irish businesses.

Regardless of the chosen extension, Irish businesses are continuing to participate in the Getting Business Online program with several hundred registrations per month.

Sign up today and join the Irish business Internet revolution

Sport Fishing in Hawaii: When to go and What to Expect ...

People who love the water would also enjoy fishing as a recreation or hobby. And where else can you catch nice, delicious seafood and enjoy a fun-filled time at the ocean but in the seas of Hawaii. In Hawaii, deep-sea fishing and Hawaii fishing charters are not only a great tourist attraction but also a thriving hobby and sport.

When you are planning to go for some game fishing in Hawaii, Oahu charter fishing or Oahu deep-sea fishing, there are a lot of sites offering different packages and schedules for trips and sport fishing activities. The Internet is flooded with different forums as well, telling you which fishing charters are good and which ones to avoid. Therefore, just doing a little search online can give you the information you need on which sport fishing trips to get.

When you do decide to pack your travel bags and get on an adventure on sport fishing, you will be happy to know that you can basically go any time of the year and get a good catch. Although there is no set fishing season in Hawaii, you must take note of some factors that will affect your fishing experience. Basically, a good fishing season depends on several factors including water temperature, wind and the tide.

However, different months dictate the kind of catch you will get. From January to February, the Marlin/Billfish season is typically a bit slower. The Striped Marlin (Stripers, Stripies, or Nairagi) can be caught with some consistency, but only in certain areas. The Skipjack Tuna (Aku) and smaller school-size Yellowfin Tuna (Ahi) can be caught as well.

For the months of March, April and May, the start of the fist Dolphin Fish (Mahi Mahi) is much-anticipated. At these months of the year, Dolphin Fish (Mahi Mahi) are a daily occurrence and on exceptional days, 20 or more can be caught in a full day?s trip. The Mahi Mahi start out small, only about 15 pounds. As the season progresses, they become larger and weigh up to 50 lbs.

Considered the best time to fish in Hawaii by most, the summer months are the tournament season for the entire state. During this season, which are the months of June, July and August, catching big Yellowfin?Tuna (Ahi) is the game.. The average fish is usually 100 lbs with many fish topping the 200 pound mark. The Wahoo (Ono) becomes more abundant throughout the summer and Dolphin Fish (Mahi Mahi) are still common as well.

When you decide to visit in September, October and November, all of Hawaii?s species of Marlin and Billfish become more abundant around Oahu and especially on the North Shore. Therefore, expect to get some very exciting fishing. The 20-60 pound Yellowfin Tuna (Ahi) are still hanging around providing plenty of consistent action for the avid tuna fisherman. And Dolphin Fish (Mahi Mahi) are still common as well.

December is considered by many as one of the most challenging times of years to fish in Hawaii, though this can still vary from day to day. On occasion, huge schools of Big Eye Tuna will make their presence felt in the waters, these are the more aggressive and reckless cousin of the Yellow fin Tuna (Ahi).

So know what fishes are abundant and choose the months you go carefully, so you can enjoy the trip to the fullest!

BlackBerry Messenger for BlackBerry 10 gets a possible outing, themes to fit your chatty lifestyle

It was scarcely a day ago that we got a first peek at what could be the first BlackBerry 10 devices -- and now we're looking at what may be BlackBerry 10's cornerstone app, a reworked BlackBerry Messenger. As long as N4BB's details prove legitimate, the centerpiece of the app will be its theming: owners can customize the chat bubbles and backdrops to fit their finicky ways. Of course, this being an efficiency-obsessed RIM, the theming should also be integral to keeping power consumption to a minimum: the darker the colors, the less energy a BBM conversation demands from a future BlackBerry's big OLED screen. We don't know whether any changes will prove more than skin deep, although the switch to the QNX-based OS might prove enough at first. We'll know everything soon enough should of a September release for the first phone be more than just a feverish dream.
