AirTran fined for advertising deceptive fares

By Rebecca Ruiz, Senior editor, msnbc.com

In the fall of 2011, AirTran Airways advertised one-way fares for $59, but failed to provide customers with information about the type or amount of applicable taxes and fees.

That omission, which is a violation of the Department of Transportation's rules for price advertising in air travel, will cost the airline; the DOT fined AirTran $60,000 today as a penalty.?

The airline did note in the advertisement that the fare would include additional taxes and fees, but a consumer could only find those details ? presented in fine print ? by clicking on the ad and scrolling to the bottom of a page displaying routes and prices.

?Consumers have a right to know the full price they will be paying when they buy an airline ticket,? said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood in a statement about the fine.

According to DOT rules, fare advertisements must state the full price to be paid by the customer. Only per-passenger government-imposed taxes and fees are exempted from this rule. When fares are advertised online, fees and taxes must be disclosed through a "prominent" link that takes customers to a pager where that information is clearly presented.

A new DOT rule that requires airlines to disclose all fees, including government fees and taxes, is scheduled to take effect on Jan. 26.

Google Slaps Its Own Wrist Over Chrome Pay-For-Blogging Flap

Google is "downgrading the search result ranking of the company's own Web browser, Google Chrome, for 60 days," as PC World reports, because some bloggers ending up being paid to mention Chrome during a recent ad campaign.

Doing that violates Google's "own rules governing paid promotions," Bloomberg News notes, which aim to prohibit the gaming of search results.

So what happened?

According to PC World:

"Google reportedly bought online video ads from a digital media agency called Essence Digital. Essence then reportedly hired another company called Unruly to carry out Google's video ad campaign, according to Search Engine Land. The end result was that a number of blogs wrote positive posts (with the video embedded) about Google Chrome for compensation?the reward was apparently Amazon gift cards, SEL said in a separate report."

Google says it only agreed to buy ads, not to pay any bloggers to mention Chrome.

As Slate says:

"The punishment imposed on Chrome will significantly lower the results ranking of the main download page for the browser. Google regularly punishes sites who violate the company's quality guidelines in order to get a favorable treatment from their search analysis algorithm, PageRank. The practice of gaming the rankings is often referred to as Black Hat SEO, and it's something Google has publicly worked hard to combat."

What 2012 Holds for Social Gaming - The Next Web

London-based King.com?has launched just three of its games on Facebook so far, and yet it?s already?the fourth-largest game developer on the social network worldwide.

The titles King.com has made available on Facebook now represent about two-thirds of the 1 billion plays that King records each month. Total monthly gameplays are up five-fold in the past year, attracting now more than 25m monthly unique users and the number of King.com games played per month has gone up from 500 million to 1.2 billion.

We met with Riccardo Zacconi, the chief executive and founder of King.com,who spoke at the Game On! Panel at LeWeb 2011, to talk about the trends for gaming in 2012, what?s next for King.com and the future of casual social games.

2011 marked a turning point for King.com, with your move to Facebook bringing you incredible results in only a few months. Can you tell us more about how all this happened?

Riccardo Zacconi: ?We started the company in 2003, so we are one of ?the oldies?, and we?ve developed over the course of 8 years about 160 casual games, all of which were games you could play with other people, not just by yourself. We distributed these games through online partners.

In 2008 Facebook started taking off and we saw that more and more traffic was going from classic partners to Facebook, but we still didn?t launch anything there. We were a bit late to Facebook, we only started trying different things in 2010. We launched our first game last April, an existing title from Kings.com, which we put in what we call a social envelope, a story mode where you can play not only the 3 minutes game, but you can also play with a story line and many levels, so it lasts much longer.

We launched the second game in June, the third game in October and within 8 months we?ve become the fourth biggest game developer on Facebook with 5.8 million daily players. Our latest game became within two months the largest casual game on Facebook with 3.3 million players per day. Bejeweled, a classic game title, became the second largest casual game on Facebook with 2.7 million daily players.?

What?s next for King.com? What are your priorities for the first months of 2012?

Riccardo Zacconi: ?For 2012 our number one goal is to continue to launch new games on Facebook. Every game has to have super high quality. The first focus is that ? continue to build on the reach of Facebook and Google+.

We plan to bring the rest of our 160 titles on Facebook?s platform. This is the easy part as thanks to this platform we?ve developed and which we use for every new game, making the transition very efficient. For instance, for the latest game we launched on Facebook we only had to change 1% of the code on the platform.

The second one is to do the same thing we have done on Facebook on mobile, and these are our two key strategic priorities for 2012. I think casual games are perfect to bring on mobile, as they don?t really need to change. Now, we are in the process of developing mobile games, we?ve launched our first test game and we?ll be launching our first saga game in January, which is basically the same game you have on Facebook, and then more games will follow.

We opened up three new development offices, next to our main development office which is in Stockholm, one in Romania with main focus on mobile, one in Poland with focus on social and a third office in Malmo so we can have access to the talent pool of Denmark.?

What about Google+ as a gaming platform? Is it too soon to say if it?s worth the investment or not?

Riccardo Zacconi:??We just launched on Google+. My feeling is that Google+ is a long-term play, it would be hasty to say it?s off because they had more traction initially. I think that for Google it?s a strategic move, they will put Google+ in the center of search and in the center of their android efforts. For smaller players it makes sense to focus your resources, meaning focusing on Facebook alone but if you are a bigger player you need to make your strategic investments and pay attention to more platforms.?

Do you think Zynga?s IPO, and the increasing popularity of social gaming has attracted more interest from VCs? How has it affected game developers?

Riccardo Zacconi: ?There is a lot of interest in the VC community for games but at the same time it?s much more difficult to get money in comparison to two or three years ago. Then, the quality didn?t really matter as long as you offered a game on Facebook. Since Facebook was growing so fast you were growing with Facebook. Now it?s more complex, in order to compete you must have:

1. Quality. The quality of each game must be much higher these days as the competition stiffens.

2. A rich portfolio. You need to have more than one or two games, a rich portfolio helps retain the user long-term.

3. Marketing muscle and a very good marketing team, so you can build up a user base.?

Has Facebook made your work ?easier??

Riccardo Zacconi: ?Definitely. In the past we had to also build a community from along with the game, where you could see your friends and set up a profile. Now you can focus on building the game and just integrate all the community functionality from Facebook, which is much more efficient.?

Screen Shot 2012 01 02 at 15.57.53 520x269 What 2012 holds for social gaming, with King.com CEO Riccardo Zacconi

What do you ?read? in your demographics? What countries are in your focus?

Riccardo Zacconi: ?From the demographics point of view, our target group are casual players which means females over 25. If you look at who is playing the Zynga games, like Farmville, it?s also the same group of users. There is also a second set of users who are playing games like Zynga Poker and Mafia Wars, those are younger males, but this is not our target group. In terms of countries, we focus on the US and Europe. We don?t focus yet on Japan or China and we plan to work on that for the second half of the year.?

What do you think will be the big trends for gaming in 2012?

Riccardo Zacconi:?Casual social gaming is going to be big in 2012 because mobile is a reality that is growing very fast, and social platforms like Facebook are a reality that is already there. Facebook?s penetration especially is super high. Additionally the recent changes in Facebook?s app makes playing games through Facebook?s mobile app look really good.

The fact that almost everyone has installed the Facebook app on their phone means that if you have a game on Facebook, it?s super easy for anyone with a Facebook account to access and playing in on mobile even if you haven?t built a mobile app for the game yet. In other words, if you have a large user base on Facebook, this enables to also build a strong user base on mobile I believe. We now have the largest casual game on Facebook and so if we develop the same casual game also for mobile and it?s free, I think it?s gonna be interesting. Also tablets will factor in the success for social gaming in 2012. Tablets will substitute, I believe, home use of computers, it?s much nicer to sit on your couch with a tablet and enjoy a game.?

Do you believe that Kindle will be a strong player?

Riccardo Zacconi: ?I just received my Kindle Fire before I came to LeWeb, from the US. I?ve held it in my hands but haven?t really used it yet. From a physical? point of you though just by interacting with the hardware, you know you need to love your gadgets, I love it! it?s only so small but it feels right, it feels good.

I think it?s great for consumption of content. Actually I like it so much that for the King.com Christmas party I?ve bought a Kindle Fire for everyone in the company. I believe that this is the device that will open up the tablet market, unless iPad becomes cheaper. It?s a price point. For a large portion of users to pay 400 or 600 dollars is too expensive, whereas Amazon?s Kindle Fire is very affordable.?

What do you thing will be big for the gaming world in 2012 apart from the social media effect?

Riccardo Zacconi: ?Casual is a genre of games that you can put accross everywhere, so this is one thing, next thing I think are specific genres for which there is a high demand, especially high quality game titles for a male audience that likes to play, for example on a console.

They are used to playing games with a much higher quality, but the quality that is offered now on mobile and social platforms is not enough for them. Games of chance is also an area that we?ve seen some companies developing games which are getting traction because of the instant monetization, but it?s a niche group, but in terms of reach I think definitely casual games on all devices I think will be an interesting trend to see.?

(AP) ? With Aaron Rodgers resting up for the playoffs, Matt Flynn had to be ready to run the Green Bay Packers offense.

Was he ever.

With Rodgers bundled up on the sideline in cold and windy conditions at Lambeau Field, Flynn set franchise records with 480 yards passing and six touchdowns ? the final one to Jermichael Finley with 1:10 left, giving the Packers a 45-41 victory over the Detroit Lions in a wild regular-season finale Sunday.

"Just think of all of the great quarterbacks that have come through here," Flynn said. "It's very humbling. I just thank everybody around me and everything. I couldn't have done it, obviously, by myself. There's weapons all around me, and the line did a great job. It's one of those games where it got to a shootout, and we just kept having to match each other."

It was an ideal afternoon for the Packers (15-1), who got to rest Rodgers and several other big-name players without losing momentum going into the playoffs.

Flynn barely got the Packers past Matthew Stafford, who threw for 520 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions for the Lions (10-6). Detroit has lost 21 straight road games to the Packers, including the postseason.

"We're going to use this as motivation," Stafford said. "We had a chance and didn't get it done, so we've got to get out there and start making it happen. We've got to get on a run here. That's what it's all about in the playoffs, (getting) hot and hopefully we can get that going."

The Lions head to the playoffs for the first time since 1999 as a wild card, but could have clinched the No. 5 seed with a win. Instead, they'll be the No. 6 seed and face New Orleans in the first round.

"This certainly wasn't a throwaway game for us," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said.

According to STATS LLC, it was the first time in NFL history opposing quarterbacks each threw for 400-plus yards and five-plus touchdowns in a game. The teams' combined 971 net yards passing broke the record of 906 set earlier this season in a Week 1 game between New England and Miami.

"Flynn played a great game," Stafford said. "Their guys were making plays all over the field and scoring points."

For Flynn, it was a huge day that could eventually lead to a significant payday. A seventh-round pick out of LSU in 2008, Flynn already had the attention of general managers around the league after he nearly beat New England last season while Rodgers was recovering from a concussion.

Now he has a huge performance and a victory under his belt, and he'll become a free agent in the offseason.

"We're going to miss him," guard Josh Sitton said, adding that he thought Flynn should sign with an AFC team.

For now, though, Flynn is ready to get back to his main role in Green Bay: Helping Rodgers get ready to lead the Packers back to the Super Bowl.

"We've got the best quarterback in the NFL as a starter here, so it's not hard at all," Flynn said. "He's the heart and soul of this team and the leader of this team. So, it's pretty easy to take a back seat and watch him play, and I'm excited to see what he does in the playoffs."

Jordy Nelson had nine catches for 162 yards and three touchdowns for the Packers.

Calvin Johnson had 11 catches for 244 yards and a touchdown, and Titus Young had a pair of touchdowns for the Lions.

With the afternoon off, Rodgers' season quarterback rating of 122.5 coming into the game broke Peyton Manning's single-season mark of 121.1 set in 2004.

With NFC home-field advantage for the playoffs secured, the Packers also rested several key players with nagging injuries: cornerback Charles Woodson, linebacker Clay Matthews, wide receiver Greg Jennings, right tackle Bryan Bulaga, running back James Starks and wide receiver Randall Cobb.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said it was an "easy call" to rest Rodgers, but the coach found ways to keep Rodgers' head in the game; McCarthy said he handed over play-calling duties to his quarterback in the first half.

And McCarthy was thrilled with Flynn's day.

"It was clearly one of the best performances I've been a part of," McCarthy said. "No doubt about it. I can't say enough about Matt Flynn. The whole world got to see what we see every day."

For a while, it looked like the Lions would take advantage of the Packers' resting starters.

With the Packers leading 38-34, Johnson drew a pass interference penalty on Tramon Williams to give the Lions the ball at the Green Bay 28. Scheffler hauled in a one-handed catch to set up first-and-goal on the 2.

Johnson then was called for offensive pass interference in the end zone, but Stafford threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Scheffler in the back of the end zone and the Lions took a 41-38 lead with 2:39 left.

Flynn wasn't finished, finding James Jones for a 40-yard completion to set up first-and-goal at the 6 with 1:19 left. Flynn found Finley to win it.

With the Lions threatening again in the final minute, Sam Shields' interception put the game away.

Jones said he and the rest of the Packers weren't surprised by Flynn's performance.

"He's a great player, great quarterback," Jones said. "He just showed the world what he can do."

Notes: Ndamukong Suh mocked Rodgers' "title belt" celebration after sacking Flynn near the end of the third quarter. Suh was suspended for two games after he stomped on Packers guard Evan Dietrich-Smith in Green Bay's win on Thanksgiving. ... Packers veteran left tackle Chad Clifton played for the first time since injuring his hamstring Oct. 9. He played the first quarter. ... Defensive tackle Corey Williams and safety Louis Delmas were inactive for Detroit.

'BINGO!' game helps researchers study perception deficits

Tuesday, January 3, 2012

Bingo, a popular activity in nursing homes, senior centers and assisted-living facilities, has benefits that extend well beyond socializing. Researchers found high-contrast, large bingo cards boost thinking and playing skills for people with cognitive difficulties and visual perception problems produced by Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD).

"The general finding of improved performance across healthy and afflicted groups suggests the value of visual support as an easy-to-apply intervention to enhance cognitive performance," researchers from Case Western Reserve University, Boston University and Bridgewater State University wrote.

The findings were reported in the article, "Bingo! Externally supported performance intervention for deficit visual search in normal aging, Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease," in the journal Aging, Neuropsychology, and Cognition.

As people age, they begin to lose sensitivity to perceive contrasts. It is exacerbated in people with dementia, according to Grover C. Gilmore, a psychologist and dean of the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University.

Bingo is often used in nursing homes and senior centers as a social activity, and being socially engaged helps keep the mind healthy.

But little is known about how visual perception problems?common in aging players?affect the way these people think and play, said Gilmore, who has done extensive testing in his Perception Lab at Case Western Reserve.

Researchers tested cards of different sizes, contrasts and visual complexities to find out how visual perception problems impact cognitive functions among the study's participants: 19 younger adults, 14 individuals with probable AD, 13 AD-matched healthy adults, 17 non-demented individuals with Parkinson's disease and 20 PD-matched healthy adults.

When study participants played bingo on computer-generated cards that were manipulated for brightness, size and contrast, the researchers could compare the performance among the different age and health groups.

With some contrast and size changes to the card, researchers reported improvement in performances. For those with mild dementia, they could perform at levels of their healthy peers. Little change was reported for people with more severe dementia.

Gilmore and the study's lead investigator, Alice Cronin-Golomb from Boston University, have collaborated for two decades on projects that look at visual sensory deficits and cognition among people with dementia. For PD individuals, driving is affected by low contrasts as demonstrated in simulated fog situations.

They have found that boosting contrast in the living environment and also at the table enables people with dementia?who have lost the ability to distinguish between similar-contrast objects?to move safely around their homes and improve their eating.

For example, putting a black sofa in a white room would improve the contrast of the room and make it easier for individuals to move about. Additionally, they found that individuals with dementia actually eat more if they use a white plate and tableware on a dark tablecloth or are served food that contrasts the color of the plate.

Boosting contrast is among interventions known as Externally Supported Performance Interventions (ESPI). The researchers say these interventions allow people with dementia and others with visual perception deficits to live independently longer, perform daily tasks and enjoy life and having such pleasures as reading a book.
