NTT DoCoMo preps automatic translation from Japanese through Android, leaves no one an island
Japan's unique language makes calls to other countries a challenge: locals often don't have much choice but to brush up on someone else's language or hope there's a Japanese speaker on the other end of the line. If all goes well with NTT DoCoMo's planned Hanashite Hon'yaku automatic translation service, international calls will be as comfortable as phoning a store in Nagano. As long as a subscriber has at least an Android 2.2 phone or tablet on the carrier's moperaU or sp-mode plans, the service will automatically convert spoken Japanese to another language, and reverse the process for the reply, whether it's through an outbound phone call or an in-person conversation. The service will bridge cultures starting from November 1st, when it will translate from Japanese to Chinese, English or Korean. Indonesian, Thai and five European languages are coming later that month. If you're not that patient, NTT DoCoMo will provide a holdover on October 11th through Utsushite Hon'yaku, a free Word Lens-like augmented reality translator for Android 2.3 that can convert text to or from Japanese with a glance through a phone camera.

Screen Grabs: Elementary pilot has Sherlock Holmes using murder victim's Lumia 800
Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today's movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dot com.
Whether you're a fan of CBS's Elementary spin on Sherlock Holmes or not, it sure gave a nice amount screen-time to cellphones in its pilot. While there was prominent use of iPhones in the episode, we're highlighting a seemingly forced Nokia Lumia 800 cameo -- you'd think it would at least be the 900 being an American series. The camera takes a tight shot of Sherlock swiping through photos on a murder victim's black Lumia twice, highlighting the Nokia logo and Windows Phone 7.5 gallery interface. Here's your clue to see it for yourself: check around the 8-minute mark at the source link below.

Report: Half of US adults own tablet or smartphone
2 hrs.
AP staff , AP
Americans' news habits are on the move.
Half of all adult Americans now own either a tablet computer or a smartphone, and one-third use their mobile devices to view news stories and video clips at least once a week.
That's according to a survey by the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism, which polled more than 9,500 adults from late June to early August.
The findings have "major implications for how news will be consumed and paid for," says Pew. About 20 percent of the mobile news users surveyed said they paid for an online subscription in the last year.
But mobile viewing doesn't necessarily mean that people are cutting back on viewing news on PCs or in newspapers. About half of the tablet news users that Pew surveyed say their tablets spur them to spend more time consuming news, and about one-third say they get news from new sources they didn't use before. Nearly one-third of the mobile users also have print-only subscriptions, and most have no plans to give them up.
Devices based on Google's Android platform are gaining momentum. Pew found that just over half of tablet owners reported owning Apple's iPad, compared with 81 percent a year ago. Forty-eight percent now own an Android-based device, including Amazon.com's Kindle Fire.

Fantasy Football - Choosing a Sure Thing
Owen Daniels, Tight End for the Houston Texans
A.J. Green, Wide Receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals
Jahvid Best, Running Back for the Detroit Lions
Kevin Kolb, Quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals
LeSean McCoy, Running Back for the Philadelphia Eagles
If you keep up with football news and looked closely at fantasy rankings at the start of the season, there was one player that stood out above the rest. That pick was LeSean McCoy. If you picked him for your fantasy football team, especially if you are part of a league that gives bonus points for receptions, you probably thought you had a great pick.
In 2010 - his first season as a starter - the Philadelphia Eagles Running Back led all running backs with 78 catches. Thoughts were that he would be as productive this year while working to increase his 1,080 rushing yards and 7 touchdowns.
Although their defense is chock full of new players including CB Nnamdi Asomugha, DE Jason Babin, CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, and DT Cullen Jenkins, the truth is it might take a while for these new additions to assimilate into the team and adapt to the Eagle's defensive system.
In taking a look at the offensive line-up: QB Michael Vick with 3,018 passing yards, 676 rushing yards, and 30 total touchdowns, receivers DeSean Jackson (1,056 receiving yards) and Jeremy Maclin (10 TDs) and you have a winning combination.
Also, kudos to the Eagles for signing up QB Vince Young and RB Ronnie Brown as stellar backups - in the event Vick and McCoy sustain injuries.
McCoy is on track in week 8 to match his stats from last year. If you drafted him to your fantasy football team, you are probably glad that you made that pick.
If you play fantasy football and were looking for a break out star to draft this year, there were plenty to choose from:
