(AP) — Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zidan was abducted by gunmen who snatched him from his hotel and held him for several hours Thursday in apparent retaliation for a U.S. special forces raid that captured an al-Qaida suspect in the capital last weekend.

The brazen abduction, which ended with Zidan's rescue, underscored the lawlessness gripping Libya two years after the ouster of autocrat Moammar Gadhafi. The weak central government is virtually hostage to multiple, independent-minded militias — many of them made up of Islamic militants — that serve as security forces and hold sway across the country.

The gunmen who abducted Zidan were believed to be militiamen, and it appeared he was freed when members of another militia stormed the site where he was being held.

Thursday afternoon, after authorities announced he had been freed, Zidan spoke at a Cabinet meeting aired live on Libyan TV. He thanked those who helped free him but provided no details and avoided pointing fingers at those behind the abduction.

"We hope this matter will be treated with wisdom and rationality, far from tension," he said. "There are many things that need dealing with."

The incident raised alarm over the power that militias hold over government officials. The militias originated in the informal brigades of "revolutionaries" who fought Gadhafi's forces in the 2011 revolt against his rule. Since Gahdafi's ouster and death, the groups have resisted efforts to disarm them, multiplied in number and mushroomed in size.

With the regular police forces and army weak and in disarray, the government has had to enlist some militias to act as security forces. But they often remain more loyal to their own agendas and commanders than the state, and many have hard-line Islamic ideologies sympathetic to al-Qaida. They frequently lash out at officials to get their way. Last month, the son of the defense minister was abducted, and there are frequent killings of security officials who cross militiamen.

"The abduction is like the shock that awakened Libyans. Facts on the ground now are clearer than never before: Libya is ruled by militias," said prominent rights campaigner Hassan al-Amin.

The motive for Zidan's abduction was not immediately known. But it comes after many Islamic miltiants and militias expressed outrage over the U.S. raid on Saturday that seized al-Qaida suspect Nazih Abdul-Hamed al-Ruqai, known by his alias Abu Anas al-Libi. They accused Zidan's government of colluding in the operation and allowing foreigners to snatch a Libyan from Libyan soil. The government said it had no knowledge of the raid.

Before daylight Thursday, around 150 gunmen in pickup trucks laid siege to downtown Tripoli's luxury Corinthia Hotel, where Zidan resides, witnesses told The Associated Press. A large group of them entered the building, some stayed in the lobby while others headed to Zidan's residence on the 21st floor.

The gunmen scuffled with the prime minister's guards before they seized him and led him out at around 5.15 a.m., said the witnesses, speaking on condition of anonymity because they feared for their own safety. They said Zidan offered no resistance while he was being led away.

The circumstances of his freeing were unclear. In the afternoon, government spokesman Mohammed Kaabar told the LANA new agency that Zidan had been "set free." The brief report gave no further information.

But it appeared Libyan forces had intervened in some way and that the abductors did not free Zidan voluntarily.

A militia commander affiliated with the Interior Ministry told a private Libyan television station that members of a Tripoli-based militia stormed the house where Zidan was held hostage and rescued him.

Haitham al-Tajouri, commander of the so-called "Reinforcement Force," told Al-Ahrar television that his men exchanged fire with the captors but that Zidan was not hurt.

"He is now safe in a safe place," he said. His account could not be independently verified.

Suspicion of who is behind the kidnaping fell on two state-affiliated agencies connected to militias — "the Revolutionaries Operation Room" and "the Anti-Crime Department, which have been set up by Nouri Boushameen, president of the National Congress, or parliament.

Boushameen later sought to distance himself from the abduction, telling a news conference that members of the two agencies who took part in the abduction would be punished.

He said he visited the prime minister while in captivity and promised to resolve the crisis.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said at a news conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, "It is clearly a situation that is still evolving. The Libyan prime minister to our understanding has been released. It our understanding that there has been no statement issued yet as to the who, what, why and how."

Zidan's abduction came hours after he met Wednesday evening with al-Libi's family. Al-Libi is alleged to be a senior al-Qaida member and is wanted by the United States in connection to the bombing of American embassies in Tanzania and Kenya in 1998, with a $5 million bounty on his head. U.S. officials say he is now being held on an U.S. warship.

On Tuesday, Zidan said the Libyan government had requested that Washington allow al-Libi's family to establish contact with him. Zidan insisted that Libyan citizens should be tried in their homeland if they are accused of crimes, stressing that "Libya does not surrender its sons."

Still, he said relations with Washington, a key ally of his government, would not be affected.

Immediately after the raid, the Libyan government issued a statement saying it was carried out without its knowledge and asking Washington for "clarifications" about the operation.

In Brunei, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the abduction and called it a "clear wake-up call" for countries undergoing democratic transitions.

"It would be very important for the Libyan government and its leadership to ensure inclusive dialogue and rehabilitation so that all the people can join the process," Ban said during an Asian summit.

Disney Unveils Its First New ‘Star Wars’ Character In ‘Star Wars Rebels’

A lot has happened in the short time that the Walt Disney Company purchased the Stars Wars franchise from George Lucas (some of it good, some of it worrisome) and today we get our first look at one major development. A new animated series titled Star Wars Rebels is set to debut and today we get our first look at the first NEW Star Wars character created since Disney bought the franchise. The character is a bad guy — a Jedi hunter, actually — and he will be a sidekick to Darth Vader. Click below to get your first look at The Inquisitor as he will appear in Star Wars Rebels.

The brand new Star Wars animated series Star Wars Rebels just released the very first, all new villain for the Empire. Take a gander at the Inquisitor. The Inquisitor premiered at the New York Comic-Con panel thanks to this video hosted by Dave Filoni. The Inquisitor’s job is to track down down the remaining Jedi Knights. He’s under the control of Darth Vader—HOWEVER do not think that The Inquisitor negates Order 66. Everyone at the panel said this is still something very important to them and they want to continue to place importance around the fact that Luke is the last Jedi. And finally, even though we got this character there is still no announcement on which additional characters would be returning to the animated series.

It’s unknown if any of the animated characters will appear in the live-action Star Wars films that are in production but I suspect there will be enough new characters to go around. I don’t watch the animated Star Wars shows (except for the Star Wars/Lego cartoon that I caught a few weeks ago and really loved) but I’m gonna guess that characters we see in the toons will likely appear on the big screen, too. It’s weird to think of a bunch of new Star Wars characters heading our way but Disney paid a lot of money for the franchise. They’re gonna do everything they can to make it their own.

'Big Bang Theory' the Most Expensive Show for Advertisers

Monty Brinton/CBS

"The Big Bang Theory"

Just as in the cosmological model that explains how the universe sprang into existence from an infinitely dense singularity, CBS’ The Big Bang Theory has grown with such explosive force that it appears to be its own ever-expanding universe.

According to media buyers surveyed by Adweek, The Big Bang Theory in its seventh season now commands a staggering $326,260 per 30-second spot, topping the likes of NBC’s The Voice ($264,575 for the higher-rated Wednesday night show), ABC’s Modern Family ($257,435) and Fox’s The Simpsons ($256,963).

STORY: 'Big Bang Theory' Stars Seeking Hefty Pay Raises

The robust unit cost is a function of Big Bang’s monster ratings—three episodes into the fall season, Chuck Lorre’s sitcom is averaging 19.2 million viewers and a 5.6 rating in the adults 18-49 demo—and its seemingly unstoppable growth. After posting full-season highs two years running, Big Bang’s ratings are currently trending up 12 percent versus the 2012-13 campaign.

While the NFL commands the highest unit cost of any TV property—Fox’s roster of eight late national NFC games fetches a jaw-dropping $595,000 per :30, while each unit in NBC’s Sunday Night Football franchise is worth around $570,000 a throw—the general entertainment programs enjoy a longer run: 35 weeks when lower-priced repeats are factored in.

PHOTOS: 'The Big Bang Theory's' Nerdiest Guest Stars

Among the Big Four broadcast nets, CBS earns the biggest average premiums for its freshman series. The Crazy Ones, the new Tuesday 9 p.m. anchor starring Robin Williams as an idiosyncratic ad agency boss, boasts an average unit cost of $175,200—the highest rate for any new comedy. The defending ratings champ also earns top dollar for Big Bang lead-out The Millers ($122,390), Lorre’s latest multicamera sitcom Mom ($138,575) and the ratings-challenged serialized thriller Hostages ($134,420).

ABC’s established reach vehicles (Modern Family, Grey’s Anatomy and, more recently, Scandal) and its popularity with younger, affluent women have allowed it to remain competitive despite ongoing ratings hiccups. But it’s a new male-skewing series that’s really leading the charge this fall, as Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is pricing at an average rate of $169,730 per :30. Lead-out comedies The Goldbergs ($93,200) and Trophy Wife ($91,175) are roughly on par with the former time slot occupants, while the canceled lottery drama Lucky 7 was a bad bet at $86,355 a pop.

ABC’s new Rebel Wilson sitcom Super Fun Night is fetching around $130,823 for each 30-second spot, an increase of some 33 percent compared to its predecessor, The Neighbors.

Having inherited the plum Voice lead-out from Revolution, NBC’s The Blacklist enjoys the distinction of being the most valuable new series on the dial ($198,667). And while that has helped establish NBC as the most expensive environment on Monday nights, pricing parity hasn’t trickled down to new shows like Ironside ($71,500) and Welcome to the Family ($62,370). That said, The Michael J. Fox Show commands a healthy $110,050 per spot.

Fox’s lighter load of newbies includes broadcast’s best new bargain (Sleepy Hollow, $139,120), the underperforming Dads ($120,100) and the on-the-bubble Andy Samberg comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine ($96,225).

Kelly, Washington, Collins missing at practice

FOXBORO — Tommy Kelly and Leon Washington missed their second straight practice on Thursday while defensive end Michael Buchanan returned as the Patriots worked out in sweats and shells on the upper grass fields outside Gillette Stadium. Linebacker Jamie Collins, who was not on Wednesday’s injury report, was not present either for the start of practice.

Kelly left Sunday’s game in the fourth quarter holding his right knee and limped off the field. Washington suffered an ankle injury and was replaced by Devin McCourty in the kick return game.

Also of note, running back Shane Vereen and defensive lineman Armond Armstead made an appearance on a separate practice field and were spotted working out in sweats. Vereen had a brace on his right wrist, the wrist that was broken in Week 1 in Buffalo. Armstead, who spent the first five weeks on the non-football illness list, has been recovering from an infection that required surgery in the summer.

The team is continuing on-field preparations for the Saints this Sunday at Gillette Stadium.

On Wednesday, in an effort to add depth along the defensive line, which is already without Vince Wilfork for the rest of the season, the team signed former Panthers defensive tackle Andre Neblett on Wednesday.
