Playboy Playmate and gamer talks art, nudity and stereotypes?

4 hrs.

Pamela Horton has been a gamer since she was five, when her father introduced her to "Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past"?on the family Super Nintendo.

Her dream job is to be a character artist in the video game industry. She majored in studio arts. Horton also planned to pursue a Master?s in art therapy as a "second choice" career, before the economic recession cut funding to her scholarships and she was forced to drop out of school.

This sounds like the story of a downtrodden everywoman, but Horton isn't struggling anymore. In fact, you might have seen her on the cover of one of the nation's most famous magazines: Playboy. Horton is Miss October 2012.

I read it for the articles
As much as Playboy has become a more legitimate men's magazines, it does lead to certain preconceptions.

"Posing nude is always synonymous with sex,"?she told the Penny Arcade Report. "Playboy is associated with sex and perversion when it is art and has deep thought value. People who are close-minded are going to continue to think I'm some floozy when I am faithful to my soul mate in every way possible.?I?d like to think my art is tasteful and creative. The perverted mind looks at it and thinks I?m some harlot with no moral standard. This could not be farther from the truth."

"It's actually because of that stereotype Playboy doesn't want me associating myself with the adult industry. Strip clubs, adult stores, etc. They hate the stereotype much more than their playmates," Horton said. "I believe the human body is an art piece: every intricate detail, every minute observation we can make, every feature that can be adored. Not in a sexual nature by any means. This is why they?re called ?artistic nudes.? Playboy has been featuring them since 1953. I?ve been doing artistic nudes since I was 18. That doesn?t mean I sleep around or take advantage of men."

Horton is currently in a relationship, but that fact doesn?t work into the desired storyline that Playboy wants to tell. ?I?m obsessed with MMOs! I love being known as every gamer guy?s dream,? she?s quoted as saying in the magazine. That?s not the best way to present yourself to a culture that has been historically hostile towards women, especially the women it judges to be disingenuous or useless to the culture. Horton claimed the quote was inaccurate.

"The way I said it was, 'I love being my gamer guy?s dream,'" she said. "I love my boyfriend, I love being his dream girl, but Playboy wanted to imply that I was single to create more appeal so more issues get sold. Everything was tailored to fit the page and tailored to imply that I?m single," she explained.

Horton said due to contract she can?t control details of her portrayal in Playboy, and claims she has no control over what her publicist sends out, and that?s led to problems. She was particularly disheartened with a Kotaku article which re-ran her publicist?s e-mail inviting outlets to interview her, followed by "Eyeroll right?"

Horton said she's clarified in every interview that she?s not as arrogant as the Playboy quote would make her seem, and she?s saddened when she doesn?t get the chance to explain.

?Kotaku didn?t even want to interview me,? she said. ?Also, they did give 'League of Legends' and Riot Games in general the? I guess morale boost saying a Playmate plays their games. Which I thought was awesome for Riot, but they went and judged me based on this article.?

It?s impossible to guess how she thinks these arguments sound. There?s nothing wrong with keeping a tight watch on what your publicist says, and it?s hard to avoid sounding entitled when you take advantage of the possibilities given by a Playboy photo spread while also complaining that Kotaku refuses to allow you to explain yourself.

Still, it?s not a black-and-white situation to be in; it?s nice to think that people can get ahead on merit alone, but Horton told the Penny Arcade Report six of her friends are also after the same, or similar, jobs in gaming. Much of her recent advancement in gaming is due to her nude images and the association with Playboy.?

The games industry is a hostile environment, and it?s hard to blame someone for taking opportunities where they can get them. Even popular games that were marketed well might not pay off in the end, and layoffs are common.

It?s clear that Horton wants to distance herself from the preconceptions that come with posing nude and having the ?gamer? label attached as a marketing afterthought, but the fact remains the benefits are going to be exorbitant. There is such a thing as having your cake and eating it too.

(In)famous
Using sex appeal and gamer iconography to get ahead isn?t a new thing, and the rewards can be great.

"...In 2006, [Olivia Munn] got a gig co-hosting G4?s geek news program Attack of the Show! The network was initially not sure they wanted to hire Munn, since she admitted she knew very little about video games, but her charisma prevailed,"?a Grantland article about Oliva Munn stated. "On Attack of the Show! Munn capably related the latest in video games and Internet trends. She also did some segments in sexy cosplay outfits and deep-throated the occasional hot dog on camera. If Attack of the Show! was basically a web show on TV, then she followed the most basic tenet of the web: anything for hits.? Munn is now a successful actress, having landed roles in Aaron Sorkin?s 'Newsroom,' and the 'New Girl,' as well as an appearance in the film 'Magic Mike.'

Like Munn, Horton has dreams of being much more than a pretty face on the periphery of gaming culture, and she';s using her looks to help her get there. The Playboy brand has power, regardless of how you perceive its place in the popular culture. Everyone knows the name, and everyone recognizes the logo.

Being a Playmate, Horton says, is like becoming a famous actress. It opens doors. That comes in handy as she looks to fulfill her dream of becoming a character artist.

?As with everything in life, it?s not what you know, it?s who you know. Now I know people,? she told the Penny Arcade Report. ?Riot wouldn?t give me the time of day [before Playboy], but Riot actually paid for me to come to the [League of Legends] world championship. They want to meet me, they want to get to know me, and I know people that work at Riot now.?

Horton also has connections to Blizzard thanks to the magazine. When we spoke over the phone, Horton was preparing to leave for California, where she would catch the 'League of Legends' championship, and later meet with Rob Hilburger, Director of Global Public Relations at Blizzard. Hilburger is the former Vice President of Media Relations at Playboy. Those are contacts anyone would be lucky to have, but for a burgeoning artist, it?s hard to imagine much better. The Diablo III team won an award for Outstanding Visual Effects in an Animated Commercial or Video Game Trailer from the Visual Effects Society.

Horton is no hack; her drawing skills have evolved from fan sketches of cartoon characters like Gir from 'Invader Zim' and Rei from 'Neon Genesis Evangelion' to intricate works full of expression and detail. She even started her own webcomic, drawn in the style of Jhonen Vasquez, called Kitty Climbing Trees.

But regardless of her knowledge and skill, wouldn?t she always be ?that girl from Playboy?? Wouldn?t having your potential boss be able to look at you naked make the interview process a little? awkward? I asked Horton if she thought gaming and a respectful attitude toward sexuality, including her portrayal in Playboy, could co-exist. She doesn?t think so, at least not yet.

?Men aren?t going to respect women because they see them as things they can snap at. That?s always been their nature. I know there are men out there who genuinely respect women and genuinely care about the well-being of women, but men as a whole don?t typically act that way,? she told the Penny Arcade Report. ?I don?t see it happening in a humane way because there?s going to be those arrogant and stubborn men who are just gonna be die-hard, ?I don?t think women should be playing video games, women belong here, belong there,? you know.?

That?s not to say all the fault lies with the games industry. Horton admitted Playboy has some learning to do if they really want to be faithful to the gamer community.

?Playboy is completely new to this. They don?t know the negativity or the skepticism, especially of female gamers,? she said.

Horton has a video on Playboy TV called ?Gamer Fantasy.? She appears dressed similarly to Lara Croft, and runs down hallways with guns in hand, wearing a skimpy outfit. The other half of the video shows Horton in tamer clothing and glasses, implying she is both the gamer and the fantasy.

"There was this one scene they wanted me to do where I?m holding a sniper rifle. I?m like, ?This is a sniper rifle, I would not be holding it like this, shooting you at point-blank range. I would be sitting up in some bushes or on a rooftop, sniping out of sight. I wouldn?t be in skimpy clothes holding this giant gun,?? she said. ?It looks badass, but I?m going, ?There are gamers out there who play first-person shooters who are going to know that?s a sniper rifle, and that?s not realistic.??

The video was part of her contract, and she has no control over its content.

Horton enjoys these opportunities not because of her talents, but because of the boost an appearance in men?s magazine brings, and the power of sexual appeal in the largely male-dominated industry. You can?t criticize Horton without criticizing popular culture; if there wasn?t a market for this content, Playboy wouldn?t be able to sell it.

As for Horton, if you had already been posing for artistic nudes, would you do it in a public, albeit scrutinized, venue if it meant your dream job? But Playboy can only open doors, and Horton is the one who has to step through. Once she?s on the other side, she?ll have to work to leave behind a different impression. In some ways the Playboy connection may make long term success harder.

?Playmates go their own way,? Horton told me.

She has no regrets about posing for Playboy, and it?s possible the Playmate title will just be one more step towards a longer career in video games. Instead of being ?the hot girl from Playboy,? she could be known as the character artist at Blizzard or Riot. Listening to Horton talk about her life and her career aspirations, I get the sense she?d rather be known for that too.?

5 wolves killed in first days of Wisconsin wolf hunt

On Monday and Tuesday five wolves were killed in Wisconsin, at the start of the state's first wolf harvest. Despite protests by animal rights groups, Wisconsin hunters will be allowed to kill 201 wolves this winter.

By Brendan O'Brien,?Reuters / October 17, 2012

A timber wolf named Comet is seen at the Timber Wolf Preservation Society Oct. 10 in Greendale, Wis. Federal officials removed Great Lakes wolves from the endangered species list in January. Given free rein to manage the species, Wisconsin and Minnesota lawmakers pushed aside the concerns of some environmentalists and established their first seasons allowing hunters to bait, shoot and trap wolves.

The state's?Department of Natural Resources?said a gray wolf was trapped and killed on Tuesday in?Oneida County?and hunters elsewhere across the state reported four kills on Monday as the state-sanctioned effort to reduce the population began.

So far, the state has issued 638 of the 1,160 wolf-harvesting licenses it authorized for the season, which runs through Feb. 28 or until hunters reach the quota of 201 wolves. The licenses cost $100 for state residents and $500 for hunters from outside?Wisconsin.

The move to allow the hunting and trapping of the state's wolves has been opposed by some humane societies, which have filed suit challenging the use of dogs in the hunts.

In addition, the?Humane Society of the United States?and the?Fund for Animals?said this week they would sue the US Fish and Wildlife Service in federal court to restore protections for Great Lakes wolves. The two groups asked?Wisconsin?and?Minnesota?to postpone wolf hunting and trapping until the case is heard.

So no matter if you rent or own your house, check out these 7 handy tips that we promise will make a real difference in keeping you warm and your energy bill manageable this winter.

TIP 1: Get an Energy Audit

Before we get into the nitty-gritty, we should mention that the best way to get your home operating at its maximum efficiency is to hire a professional?BPI certified?energy rater to evaluate your spaces. This person will conduct what?s called an ?energy audit? and he or she will test your home for energy losses and safety issues, and generate a detailed report highlighting what your home?s issues are. With a report in hand you can easily?target and prioritize exactly what you need to do, and what you can afford to do.

If you can?t afford an energy audit, you can start to identify and remedy some problem areas on your own with the help of an infrared?thermometer, like the?Ryobi Non-Contact Infrared Thermometer. This handy gun allows you to safely measure surface temperatures and pinpoint spots where your home is experiencing air leaks or missing insulation. As energy efficiency expert David Johnson says, ?Air leaks account for 25-30% of an average?energy?bill, and this is one of the most profound steps that you can make for the betterment of your home?s comfort and reducing the amount of your monthly bill.?

Our tips ahead will address common problem areas seen in all types of homes, and they will offer solutions to problems that can be?easily?fixed, often without calling on help from a professional.

TIP 2: Seal Your Walls

The mantra in green construction is: ?seal it tight, ventilate right?. The sealing part is about getting a handle on all the places where air penetrates?through?the wall and causes drafts and fluctuations to the temperature inside your home. A simple tube of high quality caulk and a plan to tackle all those problem areas can go a long way if you know where to look (hint: grab your infrared thermometer).

What keeps the outside air out of your home is typically the interior walls (or drywall), but you?ll find many holes that have been cut out of these walls to install your plugs and switches. If you have ever removed the face-plates of ?these plugs and switches during cold weather, you?ll have probably noticed some cold air pouring out. Reduce this leakage by using caulk to seal around the the area where the electric box meets the drywall.?If you?re comfortable working around electricity, head to the breaker, turn it off, then test the outlets to make sure they are really off. Once off, you can then pull them out of the box and begin to seal up all the little holes in the back of the box, including where the wires come through.

TIP 3: Seal Your Home?s Can Lights

Other?notorious?culprits that contribute to air leaks are recessed lights found in the ceiling.?Many old can lights are actually vented on purpose to keep from being overheated by the lightbulb (they are called non-IC or non-insulation contact rated cans).?Because warm air rises, an unsealed can light below a roof is a big problem.?It?s a good idea is to remove the existing ring of this can and seal the can?s perimeter with caulk. The inside of the can should be sealed with either caulk or aluminum tape to keep your home?s warm air from escaping into the attic.

It?s very important that you not?put an incandescent bulb in the can. Instead, opt for something like a Cree LED recessed light?? this light is?dimmable, super-efficient and does not build up heat. Moreover, if you have a non-IC rated can, it?s a really good idea to put a note inside to not use incandescent lights in the future. An overheated fixture has the potential to cause serious problems. If you can?t give up your?incandescent, another approach is to go into the attic, install and seal a box made from drywall around the light, and then insulate from above. This has the added?benefit?of improving you r-value,?or insulating effectiveness.

TIP 4: Look For Insulation Gaps

Anywhere you have something that penetrates the wall, there is bound to be an air leak. Check out the outside faucets, air vents and plumbing for large gaps where air can escape. Seal the penetrations with expanding foam so that every nook and cranny?is filled. Be careful to never seal next to a gas flue or you will have a fire hazard on your hands.

Once that is done, if you are ready to get dirty, check out where the foundation meets the house and crawlspace and fill those little forgotten cracks ? note areas where you see even the slightest bit of daylight passing through. There is even an expanding foam for the big holes?and a fire block version for holes between floors or for sealing electrical boxes. We also?recommend?practicing on a?scrap surface to see how the foam works. Remember to wear gloves when using the foam ? this stuff is really sticky before it sets!

ultratouch denim insulation, ultratouch, denim insulation, green insulation, healthy insulation, eco friendly insulation, recycled insulation, insulation alternatives

While expanding foam is ideal when dealing with air leaks, spray-and-go won?t always work with those extra big gaps. In spots that need an extra bit of air-stopping artillery, we recommend rolling out some insulation. But before grab for that pink stuff on the shelf ? a.k.a. fiberglass insulation ? we recommend that you consider using?Ultratouch denim insulation?instead. Unlike its counterpart, Ultratouch?is made from high-quality natural fibers (80% of which are post-consumer recycled)?that provide for extremely effective sound absorption and good thermal performance. You also won?t have to worry about getting the ?fiberglass itch??with the denim insulation; it is easy to handle and work with ? but we still?recommend?using a mask.?The perforated batts make off-size cavity installation easy. Simply measure, tear, carefully fit and cover with an air tight?barrier?and you are good to go.

3M Pleated filter, Furnace, health furnace, healthy furnace filters, tune up your furnace, energy efficient furnace

TIP 5: Check and Tune-up Your Heating System

Before the start of the cold season, it?s not a bad idea to tune up your furnace. 30% of an average?home?s energy costs?are?related to heating, and this number can spike further if you have inefficiencies with your furnace or boiler system. The first place to start is by replacing the filter at the beginning of the season and every couple of months while you run the furnace.?When purchasing a new filter, note that the cheap ones are made just to protect the furnace fan motor, so make sure to get a more?efficient and healthy pleated filter?for improved air quality.

A tune-up is a good way to cut down on energy, prevent carbon monoxide leaks, and keep the air inside your home safe and healthy for you and your family.?A tune-up should be a top priority, especially given that your furnace or boiler system will be running at full blast for months to come ? you don?t want it to give out right when you need it the most!?While the cost of a tune-up may at first glance seem like an unnecessary expenditure, keep in mind that small problems can easily turn into much larger, expensive replacements down the road. A?new furnace is a substantial financial investment ? regular maintenance postpones its replacement.

windows, winter windows, new windows, window upgrade, open windows, window and heat, window and insulation

Image:?Early morning frosty winter view through a window via Shutterstock

TIP 6: Check Your Windows

Windows that are unsuited for a home?s local climate can be a big contributor to inefficiency. If you live in an area that gets especially cold in the winter, investing in windows with insulated glass that?s double-paned or even triple-paned has the potential to transform the comfort of your home and your energy bill.

There are three main types of windows that are available on the market today and they include single-pane, double-pane, and super-triple-pane windows. Single- and double- pane windows are common in older houses, but windows in newer homes are commonly treated with?Low-emittance (low-E) coatings (this can include both super windows and double pane windows). Low-E?coatings?are microscopically thin, virtually invisible, metal or metallic oxide layers deposited on a window to suppress radiative heat flow. The coating keeps?radiant heat on the same side of the glass from which it originated, all while letting visible light pass ? which means in the winter heat is reflected in, and in the summer heat is reflected out.?Different types of Low-E?coatings have been designed to allow for high solar gain, moderate solar gain, or low solar gain, and their application will depend on what region your home is located.

Super windows are a more recent development that feature a third pane of treated glass, and in some cases?boast a krypton/argon/air gas mix?in between the panes. When it comes to thermal?performance, these windows are second to none and they can reduce your energy bill by?hundreds of dollars. The choices can be daunting when selecting new windows and payback long, so make sure to do?diligent?research?and ?tune? your windows to take advantage of solar heat.

cellular shades, go green in your home, green home tips, save money, save money in your home, save energy in your home, products that help you save energy, energy saving products

While?new windows?would be great for everyone, we understand that they are a hefty investment that require a lot of?technical?analysis from a skilled professional. Moreover,?new windows can often be just marginally more efficient than old ones (compared to your wall?s r-value for instance).?Energy?efficiency?is about looking at the home as a system, and this is a long-term investment you shouldn?t be hasty or thrifty about. Get an?energy audit?before?you make the plunge into making any window replacement.

With that said, there are many improvements that you can make to what you already have. They require just a little effort, but can pay out big in cash savings and improved comfort.?More simple remedies can easily be found on the shelves of your local hardware store. Purchase some caulk and cellular shades (insulating blinds) to really increase efficiency. Use caulk?to seal the window frame, and then setup your cellular shades. These shades are easy to install and work by creating pockets of air to insulate windows from the cold. A?good set of shades?can double or triple a window?s performance making these a no?brainier?for winter comfort and energy savings.

TIP 7: Install a Smart Thermostat

Ok, so you got through the grunt work, now its time to put in some sexy technology to really save some energy. Programmable thermostats (or t-stats) have gotten a bad rap for being difficult to use, and the EPA has yanked their Energy Star designation as a result. However, there are new, much more intuitive?designs?out there, like the?Wi-Fi enabled Honeywell t-stat. Honeywell?s model?not only lets you control the device from your iPhone or computer, but it tells you when there are significant temperature swings coming and even when the filter needs to be changed.

Programmable thermostats?come in many varieties and price ranges, and getting one can save the average household about $180?a year if it?s used right. The idea is simple: these smart devices allow you to?optimize your home?s energy-efficiency by setting pre-programmed temperatures for different situations, seasons and times.?For example, you probably don?t want to be paying for heat during the day when you?re not even there, right? You can set your?programmable thermostat?to automatically turn down the heat during those hours and turn it up when you and your family come home to save money and energy.

Two days after NHL offer, union set to have a say

On Tuesday, the NHL made its strongest, and most public, pitch yet to save a full season.

On Thursday, it'll be the NHLPA's turn.

Facing a firm deadline to preserve an 82-game season, both sides are under pressure to complete a new deal with talks set to restart in Toronto. The union's counterproposal ? and the league's reaction to the offer ? could determine whether the league plays a full slate of games or there's a further disruption of the schedule.

"I hope we can get going ASAP," Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "We will be presenting something soon and hopefully this week's proposals will spark things in the right direction.

"Still some work to get done."

NHLPLA executive director Donald Fehr made that known on Wednesday ? emphatically.

Fehr met with the union to formulate a response, and in a letter to players and agents said the management plan would cost his members more than $1.6 billion over six years.

"We do not yet know whether this proposal is a serious attempt to negotiate an agreement, or just another step down the road," Fehr wrote in the letter that was leaked to TSN. "The next several days will be, in large part, an effort to discover the answer to that question."

The NHL made its proposal Tuesday, boasting a full schedule as well as a 50-50 split in revenues. At the time, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman called it the league's "best shot." The league then took the unprecedented step of publicly releasing the plan Wednesday online.

Fehr was much less optimistic. And though some players saw some hope in the plan, their leader viewed it as only a small step forward.

"Simply put, the owners' new proposal, while not quite as Draconian as their previous proposals, still represents enormous reductions in player salaries and individual contracting rights," Fehr said. "As you will see, at the 5 percent industry growth rate the owners predict, the salary reduction over six years exceeds $1.6 billion.

"What do the owners offer in return?"

That answer will have to wait. NHL spokesman Frank Brown said the league would not respond to Fehr's letter.

The lockout ? the third of the Bettman era ? began Sept. 16 and the league canceled regular-season games through Oct. 24. Bettman, in announcing the new proposal, called it "a fair offer for a long-term deal" and "one that we hope gets a positive reaction."

But the clock is ticking. The NHL has a deadline of Oct. 25 to strike a deal so that the season can start by Nov. 2, three weeks behind schedule. If those deadlines are met, teams would be able to hold makeshift training camps for one week, and then play one extra game every five weeks to make up for the lost time and complete a full slate.

In releasing the details, the NHL confirmed the offer is for six years with a mutual option for a seventh. The plan includes a 50-50 split in hockey-related revenue, which is a step forward. The NHL had proposed in July to cut the percentage of HRR from 57 percent to 43, then increased its offer in September to about 47.

"There's a lot of parts of the proposal that we don't feel are very good from our standpoint and we're still giving up huge concessions in a lot of different areas," Winnipeg Jets captain Andrew Ladd said, according to The Canadian Press. "We'll address that in our proposal and go from there."

Management included a provision to ensure players receive all money promised in existing contracts, but the union is concerned with what management termed the "make-whole provision." If the players' share falls short of their $1.883 billion in 2011-12, the players would be paid up to $149 million of deferred compensation in the first year of a new deal and up to $62 million in the second. However, the union believes that money would be counted against the players' share in later years.

The latest proposal also includes:

? A listed salary cap of $59.9 million for the 2012-13 season, with a provision each team could spend up to $70.2 million during a transition season.

? Changing eligibility for unrestricted free agency from age 27 or seven years of service to age 28 or eight years of service, down from 10 years of service in the league's earlier proposal.

? Increasing eligibility for salary arbitration from four years to five years.

? Including all years of existing contracts beyond five years against a team's cap, regardless of where a player is playing. If a player is traded and retires or stops playing, the applicable cap charge would be applied against the team that originally signed the contact.

? The reduction of entry-level contracts to two years.

? A term limit of five years on any contract beyond and a stipulation that the average annual value can only vary up to 5 percent. This mechanism is designed to eliminate long-term, back-loaded contracts. The NHL wants to prohibit lengthy deals, such as the $98 million, 13-year contracts Minnesota agreed to in July with forward Zach Parise and defenseman Ryan Suter.

? The elimination of re-entry waivers.

? Increasing the annual revenue sharing pool by 33 percent to $200 million, assuming annual league revenue of $3.033 billion, with a provision that half the pool be funded by the 10 teams with the highest gross revenue. A cutout against clubs in large media markets, such as Anaheim, New Jersey and the New York Islanders, and clawbacks against not selling enough tickets would be eliminated. A new revenue sharing committee, which would include NHLPA representation, would have input to determine distribution.

Among the items not addressed in the league's public detailing of its offer was realignment, drug testing or the NHL's participation in the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

New class of power inverter could mean cheaper, faster hybrid vehicles

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2012) ? With a laboratory breakthrough once thought impossible, an Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis assistant professor has invented a new class of power inverter that could put cheaper and more efficient renewable energy products on the market.

Professor Afshin Izadian, a researcher at the Richard G. Lugar Center for Renewable Energy at IUPUI, has invented a power inverter that employs just a single switching transistor and generates infinite-level voltages.

Power inverters are at the heart of several renewable energy technologies. Solar power, battery storage, electric vehicles, motor drives and manufacturing robots all use inverters to generate AC power efficiently.

However, the current inverters with multiple switching transistors generate limited voltage levels, are heavy, generate unwanted harmonics (voltage frequencies) and require filters to reduce the harmful effects to the electric grid.

Izadian's invention, the result of a creative reconfiguration of an electrical circuit during a laboratory experiment, would make inverters cheaper, lighter and therefore more efficient than current models.

"The thrilling moment of any research is when your thoughts, designs and implementations come out right and you reach the goal," Izadian said. "An on-demand change of voltage polarity might not seem very exciting, but it becomes increasingly important if you can accomplish it while maintaining desired voltage amplitudes."

Izadian, who has a doctorate in electrical engineering and is a former postdoctoral researcher from UCLA, teaches in the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at IUPUI. While studying how voltage levels and polarities are created in inverters, he made his discovery. In a creative moment at his lab bench, he began reconfiguring an inverter circuit and discovered a new property technique to create infinite voltage levels and invert the voltage polarity of power circuits. This discovery in turn leads to a corollary insight that the researcher employed to create the new class of inverters.

Not only did the bench test work, it lead to the discovery of several other circuits and controllers for high-power inverters with lower switching loss, higher voltage performance and lighter reconfigured circuits.

For example, unwanted harmonics are greatly reduced with Izadian's invention. This means car manufacturers can reduce the size and insulation of traction motors so that electric vehicles can be made cheaper. The size and weight of the power electronics can also be reduced, which can boost fuel economy in hybrid cars and buses. Such advantages translate into wider adoption of green technologies and more affordable renewable energy for homes, vehicles and businesses.

"The Lugar Center is a tremendous asset to the school's creative and innovative research process," said David J. Russomanno, dean of the School of Engineering and Technology. "We are delighted with Dr. Izadian's work and the possibility that his inverter can impact the renewable energy market. His efforts are a quintessential example of the cutting-edge research that enhances the school's image and reputation and allows us to compete in the renewable energy arena."

Izadian's work is under review by a technical journal, and several large companies have shown interest in the new inverters. They are interested in how Izadian's breakthrough can result in simpler, cheaper and smaller systems with better performance than today's technology.

Izadian has several patents pending on his invention and is seeking research funding to complete the development of the analysis and controls needed for commercial viability. Products could be ready for the marketplace in as little as three years.
