PORTLAND ? Last year at this time, one blizzard had already blasted the state and another major storm was brewing. Not so for the first few days of 2012, and the milder air and absence of snow has had area golfers hitting the links.
For the first time in three years, the Portland Golf Course is open for play in January. Arctic air crept into the region Tuesday night but didn't last, and the forecast for Saturday predicts a high of almost 50 degrees.
The mild weather has had the phone ringing for tee times, said Portland Golf Course co-owner John Kelley Jr.
"We're trying to take advantage of [the better weather]," he said. "It's been horrible for several years because of the economy and the weather."
Winter does require some adjustments to your golf swing, however.
"If the greens are frozen, you have to shorten your shots into the green" because the ball will bounce higher and travel farther, he said. "But people are welcome to come out and play."
