Top 5: Reasons to Volunteer in Africa

If you're considering volunteering abroad, there is nowhere better to go than to volunteer in Africa. Unfortunately Africa remains the poorest continent on Earth, with millions of people living in poverty in dire need of your help. Africa is also home to some of the most beautiful places, the most exciting cities and certainly some of the most welcoming, friendly and nicest people you will ever have the chance to meet. If you?re thinking of becoming a volunteer overseas for any period of time, read our top 5 reasons to make Africa your destination.

1. The Variety of Places You Can Live and Work In

Africa is the second largest continent on Earth with a land mass of over 30 million square kilometres. For you, this means there is an enormous range of cities, towns and rural areas on offer for you to work and live in. From Northern Africa to the very tip of South Africa, this is certainly a very diverse place indeed.

2. The Diverse Range of Projects

With so many different countries in Africa, the range of projects available is staggering. You can choose to work with wildlife on a safari, work with kids to teach them English, work as a volunteer in Kenya in the slums of Nairobi on healthcare projects... the list goes on and on. The only thing to limit your options is your preferences of where you want to go.

3. The Cheap Living Costs

Most countries in Africa have incredibly low living and travel costs. This means, once you have paid for your flights to your destination, your expenditure will be very low. A lot of volunteer agencies will either provide you with accommodation near to your volunteer placement or they will help pay for it with subsidies. The same is generally true of your food and drink and expenses related to your work.

4. The Rewarding Work and Difference You Can Make

As I said in the introduction, there is a lot of work to be done right across Africa, with some of the most impoverished people on Earth living there. You have the opportunity to help improve the lives of people in hundreds of different communities for a very long time. For example, if you spend even just a few weeks working on healthcare awareness in one village, you can teach the local people things that will stay within the community for generations, ensuring the sustainability of an entire town or village forever.

5. The Chance to Travel the Continent

Africa is a beautiful and diverse continent and the opportunities to travel around, either during or after you have been a volunteer in Africa, are great. Many people choose to do some extended travelling after their placement and sometimes the agencies can help you with travel costs.
