THE MOMENT OF BATTLE

At the dawn of the fifth century BC, Persia stood triumphant. For over five decades, her warriors had crushed all who opposed them. In that time, no city had ever withstood a Persian siege, and all the armies of the known world's most powerful civilizations had met their ruin trying to halt Persia's inexorable march of conquest. On their near invincible warriors, Persian kings built the world's first global empire, stretching from the Mediterranean Sea to India, destroying, in the process, a dozen smaller empires and absorbing the people of a hundred races.

In 490 BC, the mighty Persian king Darius looked west, toward two insignificant Greek city-states that had insulted his empire. Tiny Sparta had sent emissaries to the Persian capital warning the "Great King" to cease his attacks on the Greek cities in Asia; more insulting, Athens had summoned the audacity to send troops onto Persian soil and to burn a Persian city, Sardis, before scurrying home to safety. Tiring of the insults, King Darius sent emissaries to Athens and Sparta demanding the gifts of submission ? earth and water. In answer, the Spartans threw the king's messengers into a well and told them to help themselves to all the earth and water they desired, while the Athenians simply put the messengers to the sword.

Enraged, Darius ordered his army to destroy Athens and to enslave the survivors. However, trouble within the empire forced Darius to delay retribution. Eight years after Athens had reduced Sardis to ashes, the dreaded Persian army finally arrived in Greece and mustered its strength on the Plain of Marathon, a scant two dozen miles from Athens. For nine days, ten thousand Athenian hoplites watched the Persian army prepare for battle and wondered how they would be able to resist an army of professional warriors three times their number. Some prayed for the gods to intervene, while others hoped the Persians would delay just a day or two longer. For every Athenian present at Marathon knew that the Spartan army, boasting the best warriors in the world, was marching hard to their aid.

On September 12, 490 BC, the waiting ended. The Persians were moving, and Athens, in mortal danger, could wait no longer. Spartans or no Spartans, Athenian commanders prepared to attack. Before dawn, ten thousand hoplites formed up in columns and waited for the trumpets to signal the order to advance. Eight men deep on the flanks and four deep in the center, the phalanx of bristling spear points and blazing shields began its slow, inexorable march toward the enemy. At first, the Persians could not believe their eyes and wondered how such a meager force could ever hope to break their lines. Some thought it was just a demonstration and would be followed by a hasty retreat. Others simply thought the Greeks mad.

The Athenian hoplites began to pick up the pace, first to a fast walk and then to a trot. The hoplites crushed together, shoulder to shoulder and shield to shield, as each tried to cover as much of his exposed right side behind his neighbor's shield as possible. Dread and fear melted away now that the army was advancing. Men who had soiled themselves in the line drew strength from the surging men surrounding them. At six hundred yards' distance, the mass of men began to scream their fierce and nerve-shattering battle cry: Alleeee!

Hastily, the Persian commanders aligned their troops. Men holding wicker shields went to the front as thousands of archers arrayed themselves behind them. The Persian army showed no panic. They were professional soldiers, victors of a hundred bloody battles. In another moment, the archers would release tens of thousands of deadly bolts into the sky. The spearmen would wait for the arrows to decimate their foe and then advance to slaughter the shattered remnant.

But the Persians had never before faced an army like this one. Athenian hoplites learned the art of war against other hoplites, and their kind of war was not decided by a hail of arrows. It was settled by a collision of wooden shields and deadly iron-tipped spears, wielded by heavily armored men. It was a horrible and terrifying confrontation of pushing, screaming, half-crazed men who gouged, stabbed, and kicked at their opponents until one side could bear the agony no longer and broke. The victors would then launch a murderous pursuit of their defeated foes as the bloodlust propelled them forward.

This was the kind of war charging down on the Persians, and it arrived at almost incomprehensible speed, for at two hundred yards' distance the Athenian trot became a sprint. Finally, the Persian archers let fly, but to no effect. Never having seen such a rapid advance, they mistimed their shots and most of the arrows flew harmlessly over the charging hoplites. Hastily, the archers reloaded and the shield bearers uneasily began inching backward as ten thousand metal-encased killers were almost upon them.

In a shuddering instant, hoplites smashed into the lightly protected Persians and convulsed their defensive line. Then the killing began.

Glee star Jenna Ushkowitz will forgo gifts during her upcoming birthday celebrations as she is asking for charity donations instead of presents.

The actress is a keen supporter of Oceana, an organisation which aims to help ocean conservation, especially in the aftermath of last year's Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

Ushkowitz is set to turn 25 next week, and to mark her birthday she wants her friends, family and fans to donate $25 (?15.60) to Oceana.

In a video message, Ushkowitz says, "My 25th birthday is coming up on April 28th and I was very inspired by Paul Rudd's choice to have his friends and family and everyone he knows to donate to a charity close to his heart.

Thousands of truck drivers in the Chinese city of Shanghai staged a third day of protest Friday over rising fuel prices they say are crippling their businesses. Truck drivers blockaded part of the city's port ? China's busiest ? disrupting the flow of goods.

The protests that began on Wednesday are the latest sign of rising public anger over surging inflation that the country's leaders have failed to tame. They come amid a government crackdown on intellectual and political dissent of any sort.

The international community has focused on the continued detention of well-known Chinese artist Ai Weiwei and other political activists. But for the ordinary people of China, there are more mundane concerns than political reform.

Near one of Shanghai's main port areas, where the Yangtze River meets the sea, groups of truck drivers milled around Friday near a long line of trucks parked bumper to bumper and side by side. They were unafraid to speak, though unwilling to give their names for fear of reprisals.

They can't even afford to eat because the price of gasoline is now so high, one man says, looking warily over his shoulder.

China has raised fuel prices several times in the past year, blaming the rising cost of crude oil. This month gasoline and diesel prices hit a record high after the government raised them by as much as 5 percent. The drivers are also angered at new fees introduced by warehouse operators.

Another man says the police have responded with violence ? beating up many truckers. One of his friends was beaten and another arrested, he says.

The man claims that some 20,000 truckers have gone on strike. It's a number that is hard to confirm. The likelier number of about 2,000 protesters is still a major event in China.

A woman interrupts to urge that news of the truckers' protest be spread far and wide, so that the government pays attention. That's something that has already been happening on the Internet.

China has banned foreign microblogging sites that it cannot control, such as Twitter, but news of the recent strikes in Shanghai leaked out through the Chinese equivalents of Twitter, known as Weibo and used by many urban Chinese. Word about the strikes initially appeared there, before being deleted by the authorities.

"The microblogs [have offered] an alternative platform for people to communicate," says Ying Chan, a professor of journalism at Hong Kong University. She says the government has decided it cannot stop such new platforms developing, and so must try to channel and control them.

"I think they are very concerned," she says. "That's why the Weibos are monitored very closely by various methods."

Chan says it is not the political issues that are the most threatening to the government, but bread-and-butter economic issues.

"People are concerned with their basic livelihood issues," she says. "Inflation's [a] real issue, so people react."

Back near the docks, the drivers say they have heard that truckers at other ports around the country are striking too. They deny they are in contact with drivers elsewhere.

That is a huge concern for the government ? that the new forms of communication could cause disenfranchised elements of society across the country to link together, and form some kind of organized opposition.

I really enjoyed 'Hex Hall', the first book in this series, so was really looking forward to 'Raising Demons', known as 'Demonglass' in the US. (On a personal note I'm curious as to why the two different titles for the UK and US?). The story pretty much picks up not far along from where the first one left us. Sophie is still reeling from her discovery that she is not in fact a witch, but a demon and the boy she had desperately fallen for was in fact a spy for an agency that are intent on killing her.

The setting of the book moves to the UK as Sophie finally meets and goes to stay with her powerful father, striking a deal to take best friend Jenna with her. Being English, I always find different countries/author's perceptions of what life is like here interesting, thankfully other than a few large words added to Sophie's father's vocabulary the book didn't slip into any awful clich?s. And I loved the setting of the large, beautiful, British mansion.

On her arrival Sophie meets Daisy and Nick and immediately knows that they are demons too. But demons can only be made and not born, and the spell to make one is meant to have been lost years ago, which leaves many concerning questions.

As the story is such an easy read you could easily dismiss it as perhaps slightly and predictable. But it really isn't. There were a couple of plot turns that I did not see coming in the slightest. It was well written and perfectly thrilling.

Jenna had to be one of my favourite characters of the story, I actually would have loved to see more of her. How can you not love a vampire with an obsession for all things pink? Do you think if I ask nicely enough she might get a spin off?

I thoroughly enjoyed 'Hex Hall' for its wit, and while this book is definitely still funny, Sophie has some fab lines, the tone itself is darker and more intense in 'Raising Demons'. The pace is fast and it's an addictive read.

There seems to be a real trend in young adult books for love triangles. I know we could blame 'Twilight', but I loved it, so I shall refrain. And while we didn't see one in 'Hex Hall' this changed in 'Raising Demons'. I actually think that the story would have been better without one. The forbidden love angst was plenty to keep my on the edge of my seat, without throwing in another potential love interest. But while it made me frown a little, it didn't detract from my enjoyment.

The book had a bit of a killer ending, if you loathe cliffhangers, you might want to wait until book three is released.

VERDICT:

A fab second instalment to the series, which I personally think was slightly better than the first. But perhaps because I enjoyed the slightly more sinister tone. I can't wait to see where the next book takes us.

Pakistan's Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the acquittal of five of the six men accused in the gang rape of Mukhtar Mai. The Pakistani woman refused to remain silent about the crime committed in 2002 and won international acclaim for her courage.

It was the first time in conservative Pakistan that a woman had gone public about rape.

The Supreme Court's acquittal stunned the victim, who also goes by Mukhtar Bibi. She had successfully challenged her attackers in court, and her ensuing legal struggle became a symbol of hope for oppressed and violated women.

The three-member bench of Pakistan's Supreme Court freed all but one of the six men. Abdul Khaliq will continue to serve a life term, which in Pakistani practice would likely be no more than 25 years.

The court's ruling came five years after a lower court found that Mai had been raped by a half-dozen men. "I'm very sad," she said from her home in the southern Punjab village of Meerwala. "Why was I made to wait five years if this was the decision to be given?"

Mai has always maintained that the elders of her village had ordered the rape. She says it was punishment for actions attributed to her younger brother. The 12-year-old was accused of having illicit relations with a woman from a rival tribe. But the boy himself had been molested, and the allegations against him were found to be part of a cover-up.

In a lengthy ruling, the Supreme Court said Thursday that the prosecution's evidence against the accused rapists "is not confidence inspiring, thus the benefit must go to the accused." It noted there were no DNA or semen tests conducted.

Mai said the court ignored an abundance of evidence.

"The entire area knows that I was raped. The entire area provided witnesses ... and told the media. Around 50 to 100 people were gathered there," she said. "Even one of the elders confessed to hearing me cry and shout for them to stop. Why does the court not take all that into account?"

Anis Haroon, who chairs the National Commission on the Status of Women, said "through connivance evidence can be destroyed."

Human-rights activist Farzana Bari, a gender studies professor, said that in cases such as this, which involve influential villagers, witnesses could be dissuaded from testifying.

"So as a result of that, the people from that area who witnessed this crime were not willing to come and give evidence in the court, except people from [the victim's] own family," Bari says, "and obviously the court won't take those evidences seriously."

Haroon notes that in only 5 percent of cases involving crimes against Pakistani women are convictions ever obtained.

"It reflects on this whole system," she said. "It is encouraging for the perpetrators who see how they can go scot-free. That is one reason why violence against women is increasing manifold. It's multiplying."

Ali Dayan Hasan of Human Rights Watch said Pakistan's judiciary had been ushering in a new era of human-rights advocacy. With this ruling, he said, it took a step backward and essentially endorsed vigilante justice.

"Village elders got together and thought it was a good idea that this dispute between these two subtribes would be settled by handing this woman over. And the message the court sent was: It doesn't matter!"

Regarding evidence, Hasan added that the Supreme Court does not hesitate to summon police and other state functionaries in its ongoing power struggle with the government of President Asif Ali Zardari.

Hasan said a male chauvinistic legal system continues to discriminate against Pakistani women. He said the Federal Shariat Court seeks to roll back the 2006 Protection of Women Act on the grounds that it conflicts with ordinances that govern such things as adultery and rape. The Shariah judges want to restore provisions that require women who have been raped to produce four witnesses, and to allow police to arrest a woman on a charge of adultery based on the fact she filed a report of rape.

Mai, who established a women's aid group and several schools in her village, said with the accused rapists going free, she is worried for her safety and is not inclined to appeal.

She's no longer putting her faith in the criminal justice system. "Women the world over should not lose courage. God is just and he will dispense justice," Mai said.

Right now you can have an ultra-portable MacBook or one with up-to-date guts, but you can't have both. But that's apparently changing, if rumors are to be believed.

The latest from parts suppliers in Asia indicates that Apple is set to begin mass production of Thunderbolt- and Sandy Bridge- (with Intel Graphics, natch) equipped MacBook Airs late next month, to debut on sales floors in June (which corroborates reports we made back in February).

The news comes from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, from Concord Securities, who gave his take on the Air production to AppleInsider. In addition to being fairly consistently in-line with the rumors department, a summer refresh of the Air makes sense: Its low price point and lightweight design make it ideal for students, and June is around the start of back-to-school shopping. The Air is small, but we could see Apple sacrificing a USB port to make room for Thunderbolt, because with an adapter it can do the job of both.

Kou didn't offer any information on pricing, but it would make sense if Apple kept the pricing and product matrix similar to the one the Air enjoys now, starting at $1,000 for the base 11-inch model and sliding up to $1,600 for a fully loaded 13-inch version.

Other stats, such as storage capacity and graphics, were also not volunteered, but we're guessing slight bumps in both as SSD drive prices have been dropping. If Apple can find a way to squeeze a 128GB SSD drive into its entry-level 11-inch Air with an i5 processor and Thunderbolt then it could give other ultra-portable makers, like Samsung and Toshiba, real competition.

New film "The Bang Bang Club" revolves around the real-life story of four combat photographers — Greg Marinovich, Joao Silva, Kevin Carter and Ken Oosterbroek — who risked their lives to capture the brutality and violence around the first free elections in post-apartheid South Africa in the early '90s.

Taylor Kitsch and Ryan Philippe star as two of the photographers, along with Malin Akerman as Robin Comley, their conflicted newspaper photo editor. When MTV News caught up with Kitsch and Akerman recently, we discussed the topical nature of the film, as well as the emotional aspect involved in meeting the real-life inspirations for the characters they portrayed.

"When I first met Greg Marinovich, that was a big one for me, and Joao — obviously playing someone that has taken their own life, it hurts them a lot too," Kitsch explained of portraying Carter. "It wasn't that long ago, and obviously these guys went through a lot more than what I have with my best friends. Asking them to talk about that was very hard for them. It turned into quite — it was very tough for them."

Akerman's meeting with the woman who inspired her character was equally emotionally charged.

"I was lucky to have met Robin Comley," she said. "She's a fantastic woman, and she actually came to set one day — she tried coming to set and saw some of the characters in costume, and she just lost it. She couldn't even deal. Like Taylor said, these people, it was like family, so for them to go through this and relive it, I was actually surprised that Greg and Joao were on set pretty much every day reliving everything."

You may not personally remember a Sony under his reign -- Ohga helmed the company from 1982 to 2003 after decades of service in product planning -- but Norio Ohga was arguably the man responsible for turning Sony from a high-profile analog electronics manufacturer into a digital multimedia conglomerate. He helmed the deals that formed Sony Music, paved the way for Sony Pictures and established the very same Sony Computer Entertainment that would birth the PlayStation, and it was he who pushed the optical compact disc standard that all but replaced the magnetic cassettes and diskettes that held portable media.
