Movie review: 'Awakening' casts a smart, spooky spell | The Salt ...

Rebecca Hall plays a debunker of the supernatural who discovers something strange happening in a boarding school, in the suspense thriller "The Awakening." Courtesy Cohen Media Group

"The Awakening" works as a moody ghost story thanks to strong performances and a creepily brooding atmosphere.

In England just after World War I, Florence Cathcart (Rebecca Hall) has a reputation as a professional debunker of the supernatural, busting seances for their parlor trickery. Then she meets Robert Mallory (Dominic West), who teaches at a remote boarding school where a boy recently died, apparently frightened to death by a ghost.

?The Awakening?

Opens Friday, Aug. 31, at the Cinemark 24 (Jordan Landing); rated R for some violence and sexuality/nudity; 107 minutes. For more movie reviews, visit nowsaltlake.com/movies.

Florence sets up her tools and measuring devices, certain that it?s a human hoaxster she?s after. But strange things begin happening that have Florence second-guessing her skepticism and questioning her sanity.

Director Nick Murphy (co-writing with Stephen Volk) sets up a spooky haunted-house thriller with some smart twists that ratchet up the tension skillfully. The key, though, is Hall ("The Town," "Vicky Christina Barcelona"), who captures Florence?s flinty intelligence and the vulnerability that emerges as she slowly discovers the school?s dark secrets.

Calorie Restriction May Not Extend Lifespan

Cooked bacon is about 38-40% fat and 38% protein [usda.gov], and Wendy's Baconator still provides almost half of its calories from carbohydrates [wendys.com].
Most of the fat in cheap ground beef it lost during the cooking process so that even 70% lean beef is only 15-18% fat after cooking [usda.gov]
A 1 ounce serving (28g) of Velveeta contains less than 0.01 g of trans fat [self.com] (the lower threshold for listing)
Most americans are not diabetic [diabetes.org]

As someone who is professionally employed as a nutritionist and has a Ph.D. in the science, I have to say that this:

There's pretty much something there to sabotage everyone's digestive system and metabolic balance.

is completely meaningless.

There is a lot of FUD being spread around about various types of food, and a lot of misinformation about nutrition in general. Eating at a fast-food joint every day is probably going to be unhealthy depending on what you order, assuming you have a daily caloric expenditure that is close to the 2,000/d that the government bases its recommendations on. However, it is more important that your diet match your activity level, than that you avoid specific foods or food groups. As an illustrative example, Michael Phelps consumes 12,000 calories/d when training [michaelphelps.net]. He is obviously a statistical outlier, but that is partially my point. The maintenance energy requirement for every person is different, and very much dependent upon that persons activity level. Their is nothing inherently bad about any of the ingredients in a triple bacon cheeseburger, nor with the final product. It is when such calorie dense meals are consumed in excess of your calorie expenditure that they start to cause problems.

Should Ford to buy Hawker Beechcraft? Publication makes that case

Ford Motor Co. is actually no stranger to aviation manufacturer.

A lot of companies have been mentioned as possible suitors for Hawker Beechcraft Corp.

Cessna Aircraft Co. and Brazil-based Embraer have come up.

Even Mahindra, the Indian vehicle manufacturer, has been rumored as having an interest in Hawker.

Hawker, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May, is in exclusive negotiations with Superior Aviation Beijing Co. Ltd. on a potential $1.79 billion sale of its civil aviation business. But even a deal is reached, other companies would have an opportunity to outbid Superior at the end of the process.

But Aviation International News lays out a surprising case for a company that should try to do that: Ford Motor Co.

The article suggests several reasons such a deal would make sense. For example, Ford manufactured small three-engine aircraft in the 1920s and 1930s, so it has some history there.

It also has the experience of its CEO, Alan Mulally, who was previously at Boeing.

Perhaps the most compelling reason is that Ford could afford to do it and still pump the kind of money into research and development needed to boost the brand.

Ford would also be the kind of domestic buyer that could help quell fears about Hawker?s future in the United States.

It may sound like a long shot, but AIN does lay out an interesting argument.

Too bad for cross-promotional purposes that the Mustang name wouldn?t be available in the skies.

Walmart testing 'Scan & Go' iPhone self-checkout app, cashiers becoming endangered species

Walmart testing 'Scan & Go' iPhone self-checkout app

Reuters was tipped off to a survey that reveals Walmart, the world's largest retailer, is testing a new system that would allow customers to scan items with their iPhone then quickly pay at a self-checkout counter. The "Scan & Go" feature won't let you pay with your phone, at least not yet, but rather than scanning each item individually in line, shoppers will be able to quickly transfer their list to the kiosk and pay in one quick step. The hope is that the new system will dramatically speed checkout times and reduce congestion in the stores. The trial is taking place at the supercenter Rogers, AR, where the entire event will be monitored and recorded for research purposes. Participants are being rewarded with $100 and a $25 gift certificate towards their shopping experience. When or if "Scan & Go" will be delivered to John Q. Public remains to be seen. But we're sure fans of rolled back prices are eager to see it go live.

Second typhoon pounds S. Korea

A new typhoon hit South Korea's southern coast Thursday, bringing strong winds and heavy rain, as the country cleared up damage from a powerful typhoon earlier in the week.

Typhoon Tembin, with winds of up to 83 kilometres per hour (52 mph), made landfall at the southern city of Suncheon and brought more than 150 millimetres (six inches) of rain to some parts of the country, the weather service said.

The transport ministry said 173 domestic and international flights had been cancelled. Schools were closed or class hours adjusted, mainly in southern areas.

Scores of sea ferry routes were shut in the south and southwestern regions.

Tembin was moving northeast through southern provinces at a speed of 24 km per hour and was forecast to arrive at the Sea of Japan (East Sea) late Thursday.

On Tuesday Typhoon Bolaven -- the strongest to hit the country for almost a decade -- left a trail of death and damage across parts of the country.

It drove two Chinese fishing ships with a total crew of 33 aground off the southern coast of Jeju. Rescuers pulled a total of 12 people to safety, and six swam ashore.

Nine bodies had been recovered as of Thursday, leaving six still missing.

The hunt for the six was briefly suspended when Typhoon Tembin approached but later resumed despite high waves. Ten divers and a helicopter were taking part, Ko Chang-Keon, a coastguard spokesman in Jeju, told AFP.

The confirmed death toll from Typhoon Bolaven, including South Koreans killed elsewhere due to the storm, is now 19. Bolaven moved on to North Korea, damaging crops and toppling thousands of trees.

Amazon Kindle Fire sold out as new model expected

NEW YORK (AP) ? Amazon.com Inc. says it has sold out of its Kindle Fire tablet computer amid expectations of a new model for the holiday season.

The Internet retailer has a major press conference scheduled for next Thursday in Santa Monica, Calif. It's widely expected to reveal a new model of the Fire there, so Thursday's announcement that the first model is "sold out" suggests that Amazon halted production a while ago to retool for a new model.

Amazon launched the $199 tablet last November. It was the first Kindle with a color screen and the ability to run third-party applications, placing it in competition with Apple Inc.'s iPad, at half the price of the cheapest iPad.

Amazon doesn't say how many Fires it has sold, but says it captured 22 percent of U.S. tablet sales over nine months. That would make it the second-most popular tablet, after the iPad. Tom Mainelli at research firm IDC said that figure matches his estimate of 6.7 million Fires sold, all in the U.S.

The Fire, which is about half the size of the iPad, could face a tougher challenge this holiday season. Many analysts expect Apple to introduce a smaller, cheaper iPad to take on the threat of the Kindle Fire and reach buyers who can't afford a full-sized iPad. In addition, Google just launched its own Kindle-sized tablet, the Nexus 7, and is selling it for $199.

Amazon kept the price of the Kindle Fire low by keeping it small, stripping it of features and taking a small or zero profit margin. Its strategy is to make the Fire a means for people to buy more e-books, music and movie downloads from the Amazon store, which is intimately linked to the device. That's a contrast to the strategy of Apple, which sees content sales as a sideline and wants to make a profit on every device sold.

Apple has sold more than 84 million iPads since its debut in 2010, contributing to strong quarterly earnings and a market valuation that has exceeded $625 billion ? the highest ever for a public company. The iPad 2, released in March 2011, sells for $399. The newest models, out this past March, sell for $499 to $829, depending on the amount of storage and wireless capabilities.

Amazon itself was the main outlet for the Kindle Fire. Its website now directs customers to used Fires available from other merchants. Staples stores recently sold it for $179. It wasn't immediately known whether some stores still had it on shelves.

Amazon could update the rest of its Kindle line at next week's event, too. The current models were launched a year ago. In the intervening time, competitor Barnes & Noble Inc. has launched a Nook e-reader with a built-in screen illuminator for reading in the dark.

ABI Research said Thursday that sales of dedicated e-readers, like the non-Fire, black-and-white Kindles, peaked last year. It expects worldwide sales of e-readers at 11 million in 2012, down from 15 million in 2011.

The research firm expects tablets to outsell e-readers 9 to 1 this year, despite costing four or five time as much. Still, e-readers won't go away completely, ABI analyst Joshua Flood said.

"We believe there will always be a niche market for the dedicated reading device for voracious readers, business travelers, and educational segments, particularly ones that are low-priced," Flood said.

Shares of Amazon, which is based in Seattle, fell $1.40, or 0.6 percent, to $245.72 in afternoon trading Thursday.

Tips And Advice When Bankruptcy Is In The Picture | Best Halal Travel

Posted by?HongPedez?in?Thursday, August 30th 2012???

Do not underestimate the importance of timing, if you are considering filing for bankruptcy. As the goal is to wipe out as much of your debt as possible, it doesn?t make sense to file if you?re still racking up major charges. For example, if you are incurring significant monthly medical expenses, you may want to wait until all expenses have been charged before actually filing for bankruptcy.

If you need to file for bankruptcy, you need to list all of your creditors. Do not leave any of them off or you could be liable for the remainder of balances for creditors which are not reported. Take the time to get a credit report so you can compile a complete list of all creditors before you file. You could end up in debt after you file if you do not.

You should understand all that filing for personal bankruptcy implies before you consider this option. You should consider the type of debt that has caused you to consider filing. There are many debts that filing for bankruptcy will help eliminate, but there others that will remain such as student loans and funds that are owed to the IRS.

Avoid running up your debt limit before you file for bankruptcy. Judges, and creditors look at recent history along with your current situation. A judge can deny some of your debts from being wiped out if, they think you?re just taking advantage of the system. Try to show that that you?re willing to change your fiscal habits.

If you are unfortunate enough to be going through a personal bankruptcy, be sure to take the time to contact all of your creditors. This is a mandatory part of the process that requires you inform your creditors of your intent. The bonus is that you will not longer receive mail or phone calls from them.

If you are facing a potential divorce, as well as, bankruptcy, carefully calculate which move you make first. You may benefit by waiting until after the divorce is filed so you will qualify for Chapter 7 instead of Chapter 13. This will keep you from being responsible for monthly payments that are associated with Chapter 13.

Talk to a credit counselor before deciding to file for bankruptcy. You have to attend an approved credit counseling session anyway in order to file, and a qualified counselor can help you evaluate your options and determine whether bankruptcy is in your best interest. Ask your credit counselor any questions you may have about what type of bankruptcy to file or its effects on your credit.

If you are currently going through a personal bankruptcy, you should open a secured line of credit. This will give you the opportunity to begin rebuilding your credit, which will be necessary after your bankruptcy hits your credit. Be sure to pay the bill on time every month to ensure that it improves your credit.

Get a plan in place for after your bankruptcy is over. Your debt will be forgiven, but you have to find a way to make sure that your financial picture will recover. Set definite goals so that you are always working toward a financial future that will never get you in this position again.

If you are facing filing for personal bankruptcy, the first thing that you have to do is figure out what your total debt is. Only after you have a full assessment of your debt, can you take the next steps towards trying to avoid bankruptcy. Make a list of all your debt, along with any assets. In this way you can see the full picture.

Do not talk to any of your creditors after you have filed for bankruptcy. If they call you, give them the name and contact information for your attorney and tell them to get in touch with him. Any mail that you get from them should be forwarded to your attorney as well.

As you well know, filing for bankruptcy is a difficult and stressful decision. It is made even more difficult by all of the false information and scammers out there. However, with the tips and advice you?ve acquired here, you will get through your bankruptcy filing successfully and be on your way to a brighter financial future.

Defining The Ideal Security Strategy | Business Computing World

Data security in both the public and private sector has received intense scrutiny in recent months with a rise in the number and severity of breaches. For example, the Information Commissioners Office (ICO) in the 11 months leading up to February 2012 received 467 reports of data security breaches by public sector bodies in the UK alone, with a further 263 cases in the private sector.

In 2012, the ICO has issued fines totalling more than ?700,000, including the first penalties ever given to an NHS body and a police force.

With stricter regulations governing data inevitably coming into force, the impact to any organisation of a serious data breach has never been greater. While the CIO is ultimately responsible for the outcome of any IT initiative, including the security programme, he can most directly enable his team to be successful by ensuring the security strategy of the company enables and complements the underlying business goals that must be met, which is no small task.

Part of the objective for the CIO and his Chief Security Officer (CSO) is to clearly define security processes so that all employees, from the boardroom down, understand the role that they must play to keep data secure. Additionally, the right technology is needed to meet organisational security goals and objectives, just as it is for any IT business initiative.

By closely aligning their security investment to reflect the rapidly changing business IT landscape, organisations will be able to more easily meet changing compliance obligations while reducing the risk that a business-impacting breach will occur.

Defining security processes

Security processes are the backbone of a good security strategy ? they give everything else structure. However, as the IT infrastructure and the way users interact with it become more complicated, so the processes can become unwieldy, outdated or even irrelevant.

Organisations must identify, define and validate existing processes as well as identify and create new processes that should exist. Thereafter, they are in position to automate processes as a way to more efficiently execute the security strategy.

By automating security processes for an organisation and removing unnecessary human intervention, errors can be reduced and resources are focused in the right areas. Such automation actually enables the CIO to more easily allocate resources to focus on enabling and securing new business initiatives such as a more cloud-centric thinking, greater mobility and so on.

The role of the CSO continues to manage response to insider attacks, threats to sensitive data or unauthorised changes to business-critical systems. In this way, the best elements of automation meet the experience and insight of CSOs to ensure that responses are consistent, speedy and appropriate and let his boss, the CIO, more effectively track business goals.

For example, an incident response processes built around Security and Information Event Management (SIEM) technology can more effectively incorporate anomaly detection, forensic analysis, identity context, reporting and will streamline and reduce the length of time to respond to events and mitigate their effects. This in turn gives the CIO greater confidence that business units are operating securely even as they execute on new IT plans.

Identifying the right technology

Vital to any underlying security strategy is the ability to provide employees with privileges based on their roles to enforce strong controls and ensure that all internal and external activity is monitored to provide visibility into any potential misuse of privileges and external attacks.

The security solutions available to the CSO to incorporate into security strategies include end-point security, DLP, malware detection, good authentication, web session intelligence, identity and access management (IAM), identity and access governance (IAG), secure provisioning and security information event management (SIEM) solutions.

Identity and access management/governance tools enable CSOs to manage and control who has access to what data and when, ensuring that only those who require access receive it. This also allows the CIO to, in turn, enable business owners (rather than IT managers to grant, certify and re-certify the access that has been given to users to meet compliance regulations.

This level of control is important because of the ever increasing complexity of interconnected systems and applications plus the vast number of employees and connected individuals who could be accessing resources, systems and applications at any given time, in a combination of physical, virtual or cloud environments.

CSOs need to assure that employees have appropriate access in order to support the business IT goals of the CIO and visibility & control, which are imperative when it comes to monitoring potentially risky behaviour company-wide.

When taking a deeper look at SIEM solutions, remember that they can do much more than simply monitor device and user activity. They are designed to help quickly identify security threats to an organisation and highlight potential breaches before significant damage is done. Through analysis of network event and log data in real-time, SIEM solutions can alert the security team to any potential security risks, data breaches and insider threats.

Crucially, when IAM and SIEM are deployed together, organisations can look at the full context of a user?s activity and evaluate user roles and privileges, adding a level of valuable insight to a security environment and laying the groundwork to more easily roll out new business-enabling technology ? a key capability for any CIO. SIEM solutions can also generate reports needed for public sector compliance purposes, saving time, effort and expense on the part of the CSO.

Playing it safe

While it might not be possible for organisations to eliminate the possibility of data loss completely, by implementing a comprehensive security strategy incorporating SIEM solutions, the CSO, and therefore the CIO, will be better able to keep sensitive data secure and provide reassurance to the executive leadership that their business goals are also meeting their security needs. This, alongside clear guidelines for staff on data protection will secure an organisation from any potential data breaches that can damage an organisation, whether they are in the public or private sector.

Finally, security-aware CIOs must also remember that while tools and technology are important, the needs to continue to invest in security education must also be kept firmly on the agenda. Threats and tactics change. Emerging trends such as ?Bring your own device?, cloud, and mobility complicate the way information is used and the awareness training of users must also stay current and relevant. Otherwise, the best monitoring tools in the world won?t help prevent the damaging, and sometimes painfully avoidable, breaches from continuing to happen.

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

Everybody feels stress, but LeAnn Rimes has now entered treatment to deal with it, according to People magazine.?

As the country singer's rep told the magazine, "LeAnn has voluntarily entered a 30 day in-patient treatment facility?to cope with anxiety and stress.?While there will be speculation regarding?her treatment, she is simply there to learn and develop coping?mechanisms. While privacy isn't expected, it's certainly appreciated."

Rimes checked in on Wednesday, and she told the magazine she wants to emerge with skills she can use in her daily life.?

"This is just a time for me to emotionally check out for a second and?take care of myself and come back in 30 days as the best 30-year-old?woman I can be," she said.

Her husband, actor Eddie Cibrian, offered full support. "My wife is the most remarkable and courageous woman I know," he said. "I am so proud of her for having the strength to finally take?some time for herself. I will be with her every step of the way."

Rimes intends to continue promoting her newest album, "Spitfire" and performing in a fall tour as she takes breaks from treatment.?

"The facility has granted her permission to keep her weekend tour obligations, as LeAnn doesn't want to disappoint her fans," said her rep. "She will report back after each weekend."

Hillary Clinton Supports UN Population Control | Peak Oil News and ...

Hillary Clinton Supports UN Population Control thumbnail

The title alone should make the hair on your back stand up, Hillary Clinton Supports UNPopulation Control.? The idea of elitists determining who should live isn?t new; but many folks have chosen to forget some of the darker periods in history.?? Daniel Tailor wrote an article back on August 27, 2007, Eugenics Moves to theTwenty-First Century which gave a history along with updates on the manipulation of the human race.

?In 1902, Andrew Carnegie founded the Carnegie Institute which among other things, funded the Eugenics Record Office in America. The ERO (1910-1944) operated from Cold Spring Harbor in New York. Eugenics policies, which led to the sterilization of thousands of Americans, were developed in this office.

The Rockefellers, perhaps more so, were also heavily involved with eugenics. Rockefeller influence in American eugenics can be traced to the beginnings of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories. John D. Rockefeller, along with Averell Harriman gave $11 million to create the facility in the early 1900?s. Rockefeller influence also spread overseas to Germany, where the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Psychiatry, and the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Eugenics, Anthropology and Human Heredity resided. Much of the money used to run these facilities came from Rockefeller. ?These weren?t just average scientific institutes; the Kaiser Wilhelm Institutes would become the center for Nazi eugenics programs.?

?The world has a cancer, and that cancer is man.? ? Merton Lambert, former spokesman for the Rockefeller foundation

It?s too painful to think about what happened in the not too distant past, NAZI extermination of inferior humans; and anyway, that could never happen again. ?Take off your blinders and look what?s has been going on, just not talked about much in the media.

?The history of eugenics in America is filled with controversy and harrowing stories of forced sterilization throughout many U.S. states. In 2002 Mark R. Warner, the governor of Virginia issued an apology for the thousands of individuals that the state had sterilized from 1924 to 1979.?

That has to be a misprint, 1979?? You mean to tell me people have been sterilized by force here in the United States as late as 1979?? The sad truth, it?s true; and it would be as safe bet the practice continues to this day.? In an article titled, Hell on Earth: TheAmerican Eugenics Movement and the Fernald Boys Home, we are shown some of the horrors which have been swept under the rug.

?During the famous 1927 Supreme Court case ?Buck v. Bell?,? Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes declared ?Three generations of imbeciles is enough,? and ruled that involuntary sterilization of the ?feebleminded? ? the long-sought goal of eugenicists ? was to become the law of the land. In an 8 to 1 decision the Court legitimized Virginia?s law on sterilization which was not repealed until 1974.

But it turns out that the three generations in this case, Carrie Buck, her mother Emma, and?her daughter Vivian weren?t imbeciles. Carrie was an average student and Vivian, taken from her mother and placed in the home of the family whose nephew had fathered her, made the honor role once in her short life.?

?The State Boys Rebellion retells the true story of Frederick Boyce and his friends who spent their childhoods in the Walter E. Fernald School for the Feeble-minded in Massachusetts, a government program that locked poor or uneducated children into mental institutions from the early 1900s through the 1970s. There, the children were neglected, abused and used for scientific experiments as part of the eugenics movement that tried to separate people considered to be genetically inferior from the rest of society in order to prevent them from reproducing.?

We know that marketing a product is just as important as the product itself; the same is true with ideas.? Those in favor of eugenics and population control are reluctant to come right out and say what their intentions are; folks might get wise to the game plan.? Today eugenics has incorporated an environmental twist; we need to limit the damage humans are doing to Mother Earth; now who wouldn?t be in favor of saving the planet?

?Since the early days of eugenics, a new ?brand? of this science has emerged in modern times. The environmental branch of eugenics believes that, due to overpopulation, measures must be taken to either impede population growth through various eugenic policies, or take drastic measures to eliminate living human beings from the earth. Unlike those who advocate eugenics to strictly rid humanity of ?undesirables,? some advocate the culling of humanity in general in order to save planet earth. Many globalist initiatives surround environmental issues, one of which has been population control and reduction.?

That about brings us back to Hillary Clinton jumping into the spotlight with our new found commitment to assist the United Nations goal of limiting world population through the use of modern scientific means.? The UN won?t haul undesirables off to concentration camps as was done, by mistake, so many years ago; that kind of stuff makes for bad press.? Today governments can modify the food undesirables consume; they can sterilize one meal at a time with genetically modified food.

?In a new (12 November 2008) Austrian study that will send shock waves through the corridors of power in the EU, and through the offices of the GM corporations, it has been discovered that GM corn has a damaging effect upon the reproductive system.?

Let that information soak in, and while you?re at it consider how easy it was to have a government paid shrink declare a US Marine mentally unstable? and hauled away to a sanatorium in handcuffs for simply expressing his views on a Facebook account the other day.

?Police ? acting under a state law that allows emergency, temporary psychiatric commitments upon the recommendation of a mental health professional ? took Raub to the John Randolph Medical Center in Hopewell. He was not charged with any crime.?

How easy would it be to use government paid health care providers to declare individuals unfit for society?? Obamacare and a government run health care system holds Americans hostage to a wide range of unthinkable horrors.? If we consider how that legislation set up Death Panels to determine ineligibility for treatment based on age or expected cost overruns to returning soldiers being labeled as future right wing terrorists by Homeland Security because they may have seen too much violence during their tour of duty then it could be said that nobody is safe and that inalienable rights no longer exist in America.

When I read that Hillary Clinton has made population control the centerpiece of U.S. foreign policy; yes, the hair on my back stood up as if I?d been struck by lightning.? This is the same woman who at this very moment is attempting to work out details of how to disarm every individual in America via a U.N. arms agreement, an agreement which would not need to be ratified by our Senate; only a signature from our president and it would become the law of the land. ?Sleep tight and sweet dreams, our nation is in good hands.

?? T.F. Stern

Ann Romney invited on "Modern Family" - with a catch

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - "Modern Family" co-creator Steve Levitan says he'd love to have Ann Romney officiate a same-sex marriage on "Modern Family."

After the prospective first lady called the ABC hit her favorite show, Levitan tweeted that she would be welcome as a guest - with a catch.

"Thrilled Ann Romney says ModFam is her favorite show," Levitan tweeted. "We'll offer her the role of officiant at Mitch & Cam's wedding. As soon as it's legal."

Ann Romney's husband, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, opposes same-sex marriage. But perhaps that will change now that his wife has an incentive to legalize it nationwide.

She seems to have the public speaking chops for handling the nuptials: She earned generally high marks for her speech at the Republican National Convention on Tuesday.

JayBird intros Freedom Sprint: the JF3 Bluetooth stereo fitness headset gets 40% smaller

JayBird intros Freedom Spirit Bluetooth stereo headset the JF3 gets 40% lighter

It's been quite a while since we last heard from JayBird, but now it's back with another set of Bluetooth in-ear headphones for fitness activities. Unveiled and available today, the new Freedom Sprint ($130, pictured right) joins the ranks of the company's Freedom JF3 headset ($99) -- it's essentially the same Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR headset, albeit with 40-percent less of a footprint for the earpieces (33 x 16 x 8 mm vs. 44 x 19 x 9 mm). The petite size naturally means a smaller internal battery (rated for 4.5 hours, compared to the original's six), but JayBird let us know that the Sprint is acoustically identical to the JF3. While size is the main focus, there are also a few other improvements being toted in the Sprint -- it sports a micro-USB port for charging (changed from mini-USB), a softer cable between the buds, an inconspicuous notification LED, enhanced call quality and the multifunction button has been repositioned to the top of one of the earpieces (the JF3's is on the outside). Sounds like the Sprint could be the $130 ticket if Bluetooth, small size and a secure fit are your main concerns for a pair of in-ears. You'll find more images in the gallery below and further details at the source link.

A new approach for controlling the skyrocketing cost of health care

A new approach for controlling the skyrocketing cost of health care [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 29-Aug-2012

A potentially powerful new approach for limiting health care costs which account for almost $1 out of every $5 spent in the U.S. each year is the topic of the feature story in this week's edition of Chemical & Enginering News (C&EN), the weekly news magazine of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the world's largest scientific society.

C&EN Senior Correspondent Marc S. Reisch explains that one until-now neglected way to reign in health care spending involves providing patients and doctors with better diagnostic tests. Such tests could save money by providing greater certainty that patients get the right treatment from Day One, reducing the use of unnecessary procedures, prescriptions and hospital stays.

Reisch describes how scientific instrument makers, which for years have enabled research on new drugs, increasingly see a role for themselves in diagnostics used by physicians to help decide which drugs to prescribe to patients. Instrument makers like Thermo Fisher Scientific, Agilent Technologies and Life Technologies have spent more than $14 billion over the last year buying diagnostics makers. Reisch reports that these next-generation diagnostic tests can identify a specific disease or indicate whether a chemotherapy regimen is working. That information can help doctors make better decisions about how to treat a patient.

High Return Investments

high rate of return investmentsBefore you focus on high return investments, or investing of any kind, you should make sure you are not paying high interest on debts.

If you?re paying more in interest on debt you owe than you can earn through investments, you?re going to immediately lower your return on investment.

In other words ? the interest you save by reducing debt is higher than what you are likely to earn through investing.

For example, if you?re paying 18% interest on credit card balances and will only receive 9% return on your best investment ? it?s costing you 9%.

The first step to any investment plan should be to pay off all high interest debts.

If you are debt-free, or have only low-interest debt, you have some options for easy to manage high return investments, including high interest savings accounts, peer to peer lending services, starting a business, and low cost index funds.

Whichever methods you choose, you?re best results will come from setting up automatic deposits for both saving and investing, according to a schedule you can comfortably afford.

1. High Yield Savings Accounts or Certificate of Deposits

It?s a good idea to have about three to six months of living expenses saved in an emergency fund. You never know what?s going to happen, and if you find yourself with reduced income or without a job ? this fund can save you from getting into debt or excessive struggling. (Make sure you track all of your spending with a budgeting tool like Mint.)

Online bank accounts generally offer higher interest rates than your local bank, and you also have the option of saving the money in a Certificate of Deposit although it?s not as easy to take it out when you need it.

Yes, I know that this isn?t very ?high? at the moment, but it does pay to shop around. I?ve seen cases where people have been able to get close to 2% with certain bank promotions while others leave it in accounts paying .15%. If you don?t have a large sum, then it?s not worth it to switch. But if you have a couple hundred thousand, keep your eyes out.

Thankfully you have a wide range of options to choose from when selecting an online bank to open a high yield savings account or CD: ING Direct, Ally Bank, Discover, and EverBank are all very popular banks. Check them out and make a decision on what works best for you.

2. Lending Club Investing

Once you have money set aside for emergencies, you can look at peer to peer lending services, like Lending Club. Lending Club advertising a 9.64% average return on investments for people who lend money to other people through their site. Investing in peer-to-peer lending couldn?t be easier: you can hand select your loans or just invest into a portfolio of loans.

3. Start a Business

For a successful business owner, a business offers a high return on investment opportunity. If you have skills that allow you to start a business selling products or offering services, you may find becoming a business owner offers the highest return on your investment of any other type of investing you could participate in.

Technology has made it possible for many business owners to start their business for very little financial investment. Chris Guillebaeau?s best seller $100 Startup shares countless examples where unsuspecting entrepreneurs were able to make solid income without much capital up front.

Not sure what business to start? Here?s a look at the top 13 small business ideas.

4. Invest in Low Cost Index Funds

Many people like to invest in long-term options, to avoid trying to figure out when to buy and sell short term equities.

If you prefer buy and hold investing over the ups and downs of the stock market trading, you might consider a service like Betterment.com which lets people invest in index ETFs for little cost.

The annual management fee of this site is between .3% and .9% of your average balance up to $25,000. You can get started with no minimum balance, no holding periods, no transaction fees and no other expenses.

Another option for the buy and hold investment philosophy is to use a program liked ShareBuilder that allows you to slowly grow your portfolio with consistent investments.
