How to make a long distance relationship work?

My boyfriend and I have been dating for 8 months and we are incredibly happy together. we rarely fight, we do cute things for each other, ETC. I live in Maine and he is going to be moving to Washington (Across the country?) and I love him and want everything to work out. how do you make a long distance relationship work? I've never been in one before so I don't know what steps to take or what to expect. thank you in advance, I truly appreciate it.

Communicate with him as often as possible. Use Instant Messenger, Web-cams, Text messages, and a phone. This way you can still talk to each other. Long distance relationships are tough but these help to ease everything. the web-cam idea helps to make it feel as if they are right there in front of you. it really helps. Long distance relationships can survive, even if people say they won't. just talk to him as if he was standing in front of you. I am currently in a long distance relationship, I live in CT and my girlfriend lives near Boston, MA, and we are doing pretty well. If you believe it will work, and want it to work, it will. Most people will say it's impossible to have a working long distance relationship. but that because they don't dedicate them self to it and also miss such things like sex. however I have been in one for bit over 2 years now.
First get a web cam and headset. Install a program called skype. You can chat to each other for free and even see each other on cam.
Also make sure you are online a lot. for if you are never it can be a bit concerning for the other person.
Communication! Don't hide details and be secretive. Also make sure he knows you love him.
If you are creative then do something for the person based on it. Like write a song or draw a picture.
And just because you both live apart, doesn't mean you can't do activities together. me and my boyfriend both play online games together and sometimes just single player games but it gives something more in common and to talk about.

Finally holidays make sure one of you fly to the other to spend as much time together.

.. that is what's happenieng to me. my boyfriend and i have been together for 6 months, and he's moving to colorado. but he broke up with me two days ago. it's really hard. and to be honest long distance probably isn't going to be the answer. it may hurt right now, but i'm sure it'll get better for me. and if you guys end it it will get better for you too. just give it time.

i'm in a long distance relationship for almost a year and it aint easy to get it to work things that could help would be talk more try to see eachother as much as possible but that makes it harder when you'd have to leave not alot that can be done to help a long distance relationship if you both really care about eachother then you might be able to get it to work good luck

we are in tha same situation..my girlfriend has just left for another country and we both have never been in a LDR but we are willing to try it out?as soon she gets internet connectiion and a sim card we are willing to talk talk and talk, althought she will be studyin (and am studying here too) we are still going to work at it?and in the near future see each other again..

Hey gurl, well if u truly do love that guy and trust him (Let's face it! He's a guy and is going so far away) then i suggest you talk to him.
Ask him if he realy loves you and wants this to go on.
If the answer is yes, then you can always keep in touch..msn, skype?
Video calls improve LDR a lot!!!
But if not, just let go?it was never meant to be.

If you truly love someone than it should be more advantageous to keep it alive..if this is the case than I suggest you:
a. both get webcams asap (unless he has an autobot for a car and will end up missing your "chat dates" like Shia LeBeof in Transformers haha)
b. If you don't have long distance calling or a cell phone plan with free night and weekend minutes than buy calling cards, talking on the phone is MUCH better than texting although I know texting is easier nowadays (I text like 2000 times a month at least I know believe me haha)
c. start saving up NOW and plan on visiting him, or maybe helping him visit you for the next holiday
d. make him something to remember you by, a handmade scarf or a decorated picture frame with a pic of you guys together or just a picture of you lookin all cute
e. never EVER underestimate the value of old fashined hand written letters, you can stain it with tea and burn the edges and use a really nice pen to make it look old fashined (spray it with your favorite perfume or something too maybe hehe)
f. make a silly little pact, like you have to make each other laugh at least once every week or something

Its not going to work. so I would be spending time with him now and end it when he leaves.
