July 1: First News Photo Printed, Second Half of the New Year Day, First U.S. Zoo, Creative Ice Cream Flavor Day, Second Half of the New Year Day (ContributorNetwork)

First News Photo Printed

Today, images drive news -- from fiery buildings to tornado destruction. The use of startling photos in news photos is not new; it's been around since 1848. A photo depicting a riot in Paris, in which more than 3,000 Parisians died, was published in '"Illustration of 1-8 July 1848" and " this scene is regarded as the first photograph used to illustrate a newspaper story. The people seen in the distance are no more than dark dots as often in photographs of the time," according to the Musee d'Dorsay.

The daguerreotypes are credited to a photographer named Thibault who took the photos from a rooftop. Engravings were made of the daguerreotypes and printed in the weekly newspaper.

Second Half of the New Year Day

The year is half gone or you still have half left. It depends on you. Have you accomplished any goals for 2011 yet or are you waiting to ramp up in the second half of the year (which is here)? If your well-intentioned New Year's resolutions have been forgotten as quickly as MySpace, you still have six months to act.

* Evaluate goals and adjust or set new ones.

* Congratulate yourself on what you've accomplished in the first six months of the year.

* Take a much-needed vacation to reward yourself or clear your head before the next six months of productivity.

For 25 cents (10 cents for kids) visitors were admitted to the Philadelphia Zoological Society, the first zoo in the U.S. According to the inflation calculator, the equivalent admission today would be about $4.76 (2010). Actual ticket price in 2011? $18 for adults and $15 for kids.

The Philadelphia Zoological Society welcomed 3,000 visitors when it opened on July 1, 1874.

* Find a zoo near you.

Free zoo admission:

Creative Ice Cream Flavor Day

Where and when did the inspiration for ice cream first strike? According to the "One plate of Ice Cream" appears on a list of foods served at east of St. George at Windsor in May 1671, according to Recipes for ice cream also appear in a cookbook attributed to Mary Easles in 1718. The Italians are credited with making full milk ice cream, although China had iced dairy products thought to have been brought from Afghanistan before 1,000 A.D. ("The Oxford Companion to American Food," 2007)

What about creative ice cream flavors? Forget Ben & Jerry's (just for a minute) and consider Herrell's. Steve Herrell is credited with the gourmet ice cream craze, inspiring Ben and Jerry and developing the now-standard smoosh-in concept in specialty ice cream stores. Currently operating as Herrell's in Northampton, Mass., the store serves up dense ice cream in seasonal flavors like Guinness, Jalapeno or Cheesecake. You can also go for malted vanilla or more standard flavors, done with the Herrell's twist, like Malted Vanilla, Chocolate Pudding.

* Be inspired and make your own ice cream flavor combinations. Smoosh-in dried fruit, homemade chocolate or your favorite cookies.

* Make crunchy buttermilk , or taffy apple or ice cream.
