Health and Fitness ? Sudden Ear Ringing: Causes And Treatments ...

Sudden ear ringing may be frightening, particularly for people who are experiencing it for the first time. While sudden ear ringing can be traced to a disease or a condition, it is not always a cause for concern. For most people, sudden ear ringing is temporary and may last only for a few seconds or a few minutes. For others, it may be a frequent occurrence.

What causes sudden ear ringing?
There are several possible reasons why you may suddenly hear continuous ringing in the ears. It is important to consider these causes in order for you and your doctor to identify the correct treatment. The following are major causes that lead to sudden ear ringing:

Loud sounds and noise
Exposure of unprotected ears to loud noises such as those produced by firecrackers, explosions and loud music can cause temporary ringing in your ears. This is a common experience of people who listen to loud music, people who work near or operate loud equipment and machinery and those who use firearms and loud explosives. The ringing may last for a few minutes or a few hours but ultimately will dissipate overtime.

Trauma
If the ear is hit by a strong and sudden external force such as a blow or a punch, a person may experience sudden ear ringing. Depending on the severity of the force, the ringing may only last a short period of time.

Infections, allergies and allergic reactions to medications
Certain diseases and conditions may lead to ringing. Medications such as antihistamines used to treat allergies, aspirin and some antibiotics, for example, can trigger the body to produce excess mucus that gathers in the middle ear. As the mucus thickens, the pressure inside the ear increases, leaving the ear vulnerable to infections and ringing.

Tumor
It is possible for a person who has a brain aneurysm or a brain tumor to experience ear ringing, although this is quite rare.

Meniere?s Disease
This refers to a disorder that affects the flow of inner ear fluids. The cause is largely unknown, although it is thought that it may be due to abnormalities in the process of fluid regulation in the inner ear. Meniere?s Disease has a range of symptoms which include tinnitus (ear ringing, buzzing or roaring), intermittent loss of hearing and vertigo. The disease may involve one or both ears.

Treatment for sudden ear ringing
Ear ringing usually resolves itself on its own; however, it may be too troubling and distracting for an individual to ignore. It is important to seek a professional opinion regarding any abnormalities in the ear to determine its true cause. Once identified, the cause may be treated using appropriate medications, therapies and if necessary, surgery.

Treatment for ear ringing will vary depending on its diagnosed cause. If the condition is caused by loud noises, for example, avoidance or wearing of ear protection may help provide relief and prevent future damage. If the ear ringing is caused by a type of medication a person is taking, and alternative medication may also be used.

For patients who have experience chronic sudden ear ringing, a doctor may prescribe the use of sound generators. These are small devices that may either be worn in the ear or placed on a tabletop. A sound generator can be turned on to produce certain sounds, such as white noise, rain or waves in order to distract the patient from the ringing sound in the ears. Sound generators are especially useful for patients who may only be disturbed by the ringing at bedtime.

Certain therapies and treatments may also be sought. Ringing in the ears in some patients, for example, may be caused by nicotine, caffeine and excessive salt intake. For some, a zinc deficiency may be to blame. Since no two patients will respond to a certain treatment in exactly the same way, it is important that they work closely with their doctor to find out which treatments and therapies to use in order to achieve the desired results.
