The 2011 Chase for the Sprint Cup championship has begun and Chicago is in it for the first time! A lot of guessing this week because of cooler temps due to the later track track and because there has only been 10 races at this track with 8 different winners.

Group A

Carl Edwards ? Chicago is an intermediate track and Edwards has 6 top-5?s, including a win at Las Vegas, out of 8 races at this type of track. In addition, he has started 7th or better in all those race with the exception of Loudon. At the All-Star Race he started 4th and picked up the win but that is not included towards points standings. To top it all off, Edwards finished 2nd last year at this track.

Bench Pick: Jeff Gordon ? Gordon has a win back in ?06 and 5 other top-5 finishes. In addition, his performance in the past month has dramatically improved starting with a 6th place finish at Michigan, then following that with 3 consecutive top-5?s, including the win at the rain-delayed race in Atlanta.

Group B

Brad Keselowski ? Keselowski had a bit of a relapse last week with a 12th place finish but then again Richmond is Keselowski?s version of Kryptonite. Although he?s only had 2 starts and his best finish was last year at 18th, still can?t count out his recent performance surge from the past 6 races.

Brian Vickers ? Vickers started on the pole last year and finished 7th. Overall performance in 5 starts is 3 top-10?s, including a 4th place finish in ?05. If he can stay out of a wreck and has a decent motor, then Vickers should get another top-10 finish.

Bench Pick: Kasey Kahne ? Kahne picked up a 6th place finish last year and a 3rd place finish in ?09 when he was with Richard Petty Motorsports. Hopefully, being on the Red Bull team with Vickers will mean that Kahne at least has the same chance of picking up a top-5 or top-10 if both of them get decent cars this week.

Bench Pick: Mark Martin ? Martin won the race in ?09 and led an impressive 195 laps out of 267 in getting that win. Martin was also one of 3 drivers that started and finished in the top 10 last week at Richmond?s wreck-fest of a race.

Group C

Paul Menard ? Menard gets a lot of crowd support from mid-west tracks so expect it at Chicago to give him a confidence boost. Last year was his best effort in 4 starts with a 9th place start and 10th place finish.

Bench Pick: David Ragan ? Ragan has 3 top-10?s at intermediate tracks this season, including a 2nd place finish at Charlotte, and got the pole at Texas in the spring. He also survived all the cautions last week at Richmond with a great 4th place finish.
