Jericho Road Parent-Child Home Program Highlighted in National Newsletter

Jericho Road Ministries? Parent-Child Home Program is part of the national network of the same name, and is currently under our Youth and Education program branch. The national model for the Parent-Child Home Program is an evidence-based, research-validated early childhood literacy, parenting, and school-readiness program. It implements developmentally appropriate books and toys in a progressive fashion for the targeted age and ethnic groups over the course of 2 years. Our program was recently featured in the national Parent-Child Home Program Spring 2012 newsletter in an article entitled, ?Reaching Refugees in Buffalo, NY with PCHP.? The article shares the success and challenges of the program and praises it for its cultural flexibility and adaptation. The Jericho Road Program currently serves about 75 families on the West Side of Buffalo, a majority of which are refugees. About 69% of these families hail from Burma.

Jericho Road PCHP Home Visitors have the challenge of working with and among refugees, who may have a background in trauma. In addition to this, ?layered on top of the refugee experience, Home Visitors must learn to respond appropriately to cultural differences, which vary from family to family.? A large component of Jericho Road?s success is its desire to provide ?culture-matched? home visiting, matching home visitors with families that come from similar cultural and linguistic backgrounds. 3 out of 7 of Jericho Road?s Home Visitors are refugees, and one of these was in the program herself. In the coming year, they hope to hire an additional refugee home visitor and continue to raise up community leaders and resources that can take ownership of the program.

The Parent-Child Home Program bridges the academic ?preparation gap? by helping families challenged by poverty, limited education, language and literacy barriers, and other obstacles to school success prepare their children to enter school ready to be in the classroom.

Jericho Road Ministries (JRM) is a faith-based organization dedicated to facilitating wellness and self-sufficiency in the lives of refugee and low-income community members in Buffalo by addressing health, education, and economic barriers.
