Arcade video games are those coin operated entertainment machine usually seen in restaurants, public houses and video arcades. But since there are imitators, it was competed with, thus video game arcades sprang up in shopping malls. Corner arcades also were put up in restaurants, grocery stores, bars, and movie theaters in the U.S., and even around the world in late 70?s and early 80?s. Most popular arcade video games during those years are the Space Invaders, Galaxian, Pac-Man, Battlezone and Donkey Kong.
Due to the arcade?s reputation as being seedy, unsafe and the advances in home video game console technology, the arcade video game craze was starting to fade during the late 80?s. Then in the early 90?s arcade video games rise again in the advent of two-player fighting games like Street Fighter II by Capcom, Mortal Combat by Midway Games, Fatal Fury: King of Fighters by SNK, Killer Instinct by Rare, and The King of Fighters by SNK. But in 1996, home video games consoles and computers with SD accelerator cards has replaced the arcade video games. And soon enough in 2000, network gaming via console and computers across the internet has appeared.
Those games that can be played through consoles or PC?s can be also classifies as arcade games as they carry the same qualities or are of direct ports of the arcade titles. Games in the arcade classifications have been designed for internet usage and runs automatically on browsers running on programs such as Flash, Java, or DHTML. Modern arcade games would really dominate comparing to the old arcade games since it is cheaper and more practical.
