String trimmers give a yard a polished and cared-for look. Homeowners can make their yards look as if a professional tends it while doing it themselves. The implement reaches areas that lawnmowers cannot, but it easier to use than hand clippers. String trimmers are also called weedeaters, weed trimmers and weedwackers. Regardless of the preferred moniker, they all perform the same basic duty. When properly maintained, this power equipment will last for years. Trimming The most obvious role of a weedeater is to trim the edges of the lawn along walkways and fence lines, around trees and plant beds, and against porches and other stationary objects. Clearing high grass from under stationary vehicles and yard clutter helps to improve a property's appearance. There is more to using a weedeater than lopping off the high weeds and missed blades of grass on the lawn. While trimming unwanted weeds and overgrown grass along walkways and trees is important, skilled weedeater users can make short work of other yard tasks, too.
Ditches Going up an d down steep ditches with a lawnmower is tricky. Push mowers require extra strength and coordination to climb hills and control the mower on inclines. Most riding mowers cannot handle cutting ditches without unseating their riders and tipping over. Use weed trimmers in a sweeping motion from side to side to cut the grass instead. The weed trimmer should be held at tan even height above the ground while steadily moving forward. Professional groundskeepers use this method, cutting grass in ditches one strip at a time until the project is complete.
Ground Cover Not all yards have grass. Some have ground cover in addition to in instead of it. String trimmers can be used to control ground cover growth. For example, ivy is a popular ground cover that can be maintained with regular trimming. Weedeaters work well with ivy because the vines and leaves are not too thick and can be trimmed in small amounts. While ivy is aggressive in the right climate, it needs less maintenance than grass and will grow in areas lacking in sunshine.
Weed trimmers can be used before, after or instead of a lawnmower, depending on their purpose. The idea is for all wisps of weeds, grass and ground cover to be of uniform size and height on the property. Many professionals will begin with a weed trimmer on one end while another crewmember mows the lawn on the other.
