Hemorrhoids During Pregnancy ? Ending The Horrible ... - For Women

Hemorrhoids during pregnancy are embarrassing to talk about, but the pressure, burning and itching can be completely unbearable! Hemorrhoids during pregnancy are pretty common, so you aren?t alone. Even though they are common, there are many things you can do to avoid or eliminate hemorrhoids. So let?s start out by talking about what causes them and more importantly how to get rid of them!

You may be curious as to why you are getting hemorrhoids now, while you are already uncomfortable and pregnant. You may have never even had a hemorrhoid before now. In fact, many women never had a hemorrhoid at all before getting pregnant! The fact of the matter is that being pregnant actually makes you susceptible to hemorrhoids. When you are pregnant, your body goes through multiple hormonal and physical changes that put pressure on your veins.

One of the key physical changes that your body goes through during pregnancy is that your uterus is growing exponentially larger day by day. As your uterus expands it starts to put pressure on all of the various major veins in your pelvis that supply blood to your lower half of your body. The return flow of blood becomes drastically slowed down due to the pressure on the veins from your uterus. This pressure creates swelling in the veins, which causes those varicose veins and hemorrhoids!

Another contributing factor is that constipation is common during pregnancy. As your digestive track slows down due to hormonal and physical changes from pregnancy, you can become more constipated. Constipation and straining during a bowel movement is one of the major causes of hemorrhoids. Straining can also cause a flare-up and aggravate old hemorrhoids as well.

So now that you know what causes hemorrhoids during pregnancy, what can you do to prevent them? You can start by trying to increase blood flow and prevent constipation! It really boils down to those two points. Let?s talk about some of the things that you should be doing to prevent constipation and increase blood flow.

To increase blood flow you have a variety of things you should and shouldn?t do. One item that you should do is kegels! Kegels increase blood circulation and strengthen the anus, thus lowering the odds of getting hemorrhoids. Something you should not do, for example, is standing or sitting for long periods of time. Standing or sitting for a long time puts pressure on your rectal veins. Also sitting on the toilet for long periods of time puts a lot of pressure on the rectal veins too. So avoid anything that creates any extra pressure on your veins, especially straining during a bowel movement.

If you are doing all the right things to avoid hemorrhoids, yet still seem to be getting them, there are other things that you can try to alleviate the pain. Try soaking your rear end in warm water for about 10 minutes a couple of times a day. Applying an ice packs to the hemorrhoid, using a soft cloth covering, can help with pain too. Last but not least, you can ask your doctor for a suppository or cream, but don?t use any without asking first!

Remember, this is just basically a primer with some helpful advice to prevent or get rid of hemorrhoids during pregnancy. The tips written here can help with many hemorrhoid problems, but it?s not an end all be all solution. Always ask your OB/GYN or other professional medical practitioner what to do first!
